Myths are defining narratives that provide meaning and coherence to cultures. While myths are often thought of as fantastical stories, they actually represent how all cultures explain their origins and purpose through shared stories. Throughout history, competing myths have vied for acceptance within cultures. Modern societies also rely on myths, whether through religious texts, philosophy, science, or other defining narratives. Examining one's own myths can reveal the values and worldview they impart. Ultimately, myths represent a universal human tendency to make sense of the world and one's place in it through the stories people embrace.

The Mennonites of Khiva: A Modernizing CommunityWalter Ratliff
Before the Russian conquest of 1873, society and technology in the Silk Road kingdom of Khiva had changed little in hundreds of years. The Mennonite community of Ak Metchet, founded in 1884, played an instrumental role in the khanate’s transition into the modern world. The Khan and his closest advisors relied on the Mennonites for their understanding of modern agricultural techniques and new technologies, as well as their example as entrepreneurs. Their contributions had a lasting impact on the region.
This presentation will highlight important contributions by Mennonites in Khiva, including the introduction of photography and filmmaking, modern cotton harvesting, and electricity to the khanate. It will also highlight their role as model business owners in the kingdom prior to the introduction of Communism.
The community of Ak Metchet is most often remembered for its connection to the millennial hopes of Claas Epp Jr. and his followers. After Epp’s prophecies failed, a majority of the community rejected his teachings and remained in Khiva for more than fifty years. Their close relationship with Khiva’s power brokers and Muslim reformists helped ease the khanate’s transition from a traditional society to a modern nation on the fringes of the Russian empire.
The Mennonite Trek to Khiva: Apocalyptic Debacle or Christian-Muslim ParadigmWalter Ratliff
In the 1880’s hundreds of Mennonites from South Russia migrated to the Silk Road kingdom of Khiva. Their leaders, including Claas Epp Jr., taught that Central Asia would be the the promised refuge from the Tribulation, and the place of the Second Coming of Christ in 1889. Those who remained in Khiva long after the prophecies failed had a modernizing influence in the khanate. They also formed long-term, positive relationships among the Khiva’s elite. A dichotomy has emerged in how these Mennonites are regarded. For more than a century, Mennonites in the North America have portrayed the migration to Central Asia as a cautionary tale against radical eschatology. However, some historians now also view the Mennonites of Khiva as modernizers and an example of Europeans who came not to conquer, but to share their friendship and knowledge with their Muslim neighbors.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
