After WWII, Hungary became a communist state led by Matyas Rakosi. By the 1950s, Hungarians were unhappy with authoritarian rule and a lack of goods. In 1956, demonstrations in Budapest called for democratic reforms and the withdrawal of Soviet troops. Imre Nagy briefly led reforms away from communism and the Warsaw Pact, but the Soviet Union sent troops and crushed the uprising. Janos Kadar then established a new communist government, with around 3000 Hungarians killed and 200,000 fleeing the country.
