A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
┬а
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
┬а
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasnтАЩt one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The history of mass media
1. History of Mass Media
The history of modern mass media such as Press, Radio and Television is not older that one and a half
centuries in Nepal. Giddhe Press was the first ever printing press in Nepal established in 1851, Sudha Sagar
was the first magazine published in 1898, Gorkhapatra was the first newspaper published in 1901, Radio
Nepal was the first Radio station established in 1951 and Nepal Television was the first Radio station
established in 1985, Internet services started in the mid-nineties. Among these mass media, about 90% of
Nepalese people have access to Radio Nepal, but the number of people who actually listen to Radio Nepal is
low because o the language barrier. Television programmes are also widely accessible but the cost factor of
TV sets and electricity is a major barrier. Internet is accessible mostly in urban areas but very few people
can afford buying computers.
The last twelve years of democracy have been a boon for rapid growth of Nepalese media. The reason for
such a dramatic growth of Nepalese media. The reason for such a dramatic growth are as follows: - (i)
Conducive legal environment, (ii) entry of young bloods in mass media, (iii) growth in advertisement market
and (iv) rise in consumers of mass media. The constitutional guarantees of media freedom, including the
right of information of the citizens has created a congenial atmosphere for the growth of private sector
initiative as never before in the expansion and development of mass media industry. The liberal provisions
of National communication policy, 1992 and the promulgation of National broadcasting act 1993 have
become major trial buzzers in promoting a culture of free flow of information and pluralism of thoughts.
The growth of mass media and communication infrastructure is quite commensurate with the rise in national
literacy from the level of 39.5 to 53.6 (2001 census.) The media boom is felt everywhere. The letterpress
printing has already gone obsolete. A recent finding has revealed that of the 320 regularly published
newspapers published in the country, 160 belongs to locations outside the capital. The privatization of
Nepalese film industry and liberalization of airwaves have opened up an era of competition and
diversification of access to information sources. Nepal can very aptly claim to be one of the foremost South
Asian countries for opening up airwaves to the private sector. Subsequently, there are about 45 Radio
Broadcasting services dotting over the remote parts and hamlets of Kingdom. The Television sector is also
not lagging behind. The state run Television service no longer enjoys monopoly of the coveted information
market. The emergence of Internet, web sites of various sorts and online media services signal that Nepal is
already on the threshold of an information revolution and experiencing the impact of multi-media
environment.
The expanding reach of various modes of information and communication, though a welcome sign, is very
much limited to about 20% of the urban areas served by power supply. The other factor inhibiting rapid
advancements has been the absence of policy perspectives on manpower development and expertise that
should sustain a rapid advancement of information industry. Further move, this sector is also handicapped
by the absence of relevant publications that focus on recent trends in the fast expanding domain of mass-
communications.
