The Greek language has a documented history spanning over 3,400 years, making it the longest of any Indo-European language. It originated independently but the Greek alphabet was derived from Phoenician script and later influenced many other writing systems like Latin and Cyrillic. Greek holds an important place in Western history as the language of foundational texts in science, philosophy, and the Christian New Testament. While Greek was widely spoken in antiquity and the official language of the Byzantine Empire, it continues as an official language of both Greece and Cyprus as well as the European Union today.
