The English started colonizing Virginia in the late 16th century, establishing Jamestown in 1607. The early colonists struggled to survive the harsh conditions and almost died out until they began growing tobacco crops in 1616. To survive, the English established plantations worked by slaves and traded furs with Native Americans through companies like the Hudson's Bay Company. This colonization by the English eventually led to tensions that caused the American Revolution and independence from England in 1783.
