DEFINITION
Arts and Humanities
Arts
The expression or application of human
creative skill and imagination, typically in a
visual form such as painting or sculpture ,
producing works to be appreciated primarily
for their beauty or emotional power.
Humanities
The humanities have generally been defined
as the disciplines that investigate the
expressions of the human mind. ...
The humanities include ancient and modern
languages, literature, philosophy, religion, and
visual and performing arts such as music and
theatre.
Humanities in relation to art appreciation
Thus, the term humanities refers to the arts –
the visual arts such as architecture,
painting and sculpture; music, dance, the theatre
or drama and literature.

1. Intensify (verb) /ɪnˈtensɪfaɪ/
to increase in degree or strength; to make
something increase in degree or strength
SYNONYM
heighten verb
2. Commitment (noun) /kəˈmɪtmənt/
a promise to do something or to behave
in a particular way; a promise to support
somebody/something;
3. entail (verb ) /ɪnˈteɪl/
to involve something that cannot be avoided
4. preserve (verb) /prɪˈzɜːv/
preserve something to keep a particular quality,
feature, etc.; to make sure that something is kept
5. amateur noun /ˈæmətə(r)/
a person who takes part in a sport or other activity
for pleasure, not as a job
6. asset noun /ˈæset/
a person or thing that is valuable or useful to
somebody/something
7. impact ( noun/verb) / ɪmpækt/
the powerful effect/influence that something
has on somebody/something
8. alleviate (verb) /əˈliːvieɪt/
alleviate something
to make something less severe or to reduce

to include something so that it forms a part of

commitment in terms of money, time or skills.

•Encourage children to participate

The above four types of cultural participation
will benefit artistic institutions as well as civic and

Effects / Impact on our lives
• Benefits our health ( para.5 – line 3)
• Helps to foster relationship between health
practitioners and their patients. (para.6 – lines 1&2)
• In Japan, there is a close connection between the
quality of life to be enjoyed by the elderly and
their participation of music and arts education.

Effects
A research on the elderly Japanese females showed
that the mental abilities of those who had been
participating in the arts and humanities were much
better than those who did not. (para. 7 – first 3 lines)
There is also less tooth decay and increase in daily
activities among the former than the latter .
( para.7 – lines 3 to 6 )
These females’ dignity of life, physical & social
activities and life satisfaction are also more positive.

  • 2. DEFINITION Arts and Humanities Arts The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture , producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
  • 3. Humanities The humanities have generally been defined as the disciplines that investigate the expressions of the human mind. ... The humanities include ancient and modern languages, literature, philosophy, religion, and visual and performing arts such as music and theatre.
  • 4. Humanities in relation to art appreciation Thus, the term humanities refers to the arts – the visual arts such as architecture, painting and sculpture; music, dance, the theatre or drama and literature.

  • 8. VOCABULARY AND MEANINGS 1. Intensify (verb) /ɪnˈtensɪfaɪ/ to increase in degree or strength; to make something increase in degree or strength SYNONYM heighten verb 2. Commitment (noun) /kəˈmɪtmənt/ a promise to do something or to behave in a particular way; a promise to support somebody/something;
  • 9. 3. entail (verb ) /ɪnˈteɪl/ to involve something that cannot be avoided 4. preserve (verb) /prɪˈzɜːv/ preserve something to keep a particular quality, feature, etc.; to make sure that something is kept
  • 10. 5. amateur noun /ˈæmətə(r)/ a person who takes part in a sport or other activity for pleasure, not as a job 6. asset noun /ˈæset/ a person or thing that is valuable or useful to somebody/something

  • 15. Reasons People participate in arts at different levels of commitment in terms of money, time or skills. • for family & friends • to present their work in public •to help preserve cultural practice of a specific ethnic group
  • 16. WAYS of Participation • Attend programmes & events • Perform as amateurs •Encourage children to participate • Give donations The above four types of cultural participation will benefit artistic institutions as well as civic and community organisations. ( paragraph 4)

(para.6 – lines 1&2) • In Japan, there is a close connection between the quality of life to be enjoyed by the elderly and their participation of music and arts education. (para.7- last 3 lines)
  • 18. Effects A research on the elderly Japanese females showed that the mental abilities of those who had been participating in the arts and humanities were much better than those who did not. (para. 7 – first 3 lines) There is also less tooth decay and increase in daily activities among the former than the latter .
