The cultures and heritage of Mexican Americans and that of Filipino Americans is quite similar in one way or another. The reason behind this is because the two countries were both colonies of Spain, “Spain established colonial control over the people of Philippines in the sixteenth century” (Min, p. 180). Actually, an interesting fact is that the Philippines was colonized by Spain for many years than Mexico, for 333 years from 1521 to 1898. As such, these Filipino Americans and most other Spanish-speaking communities such as Mexican Americans share several aspects including language, food, religion and family togetherness. To some extent, this has contributed to the less recognition and misperceptions of most people that the Filipino Americans are not part of the Asian American community due to their social context and cultural alignment to Latin Americans. A similarity that Filipino Americans have with the other Asian immigrants is that most of the early immigrants settled in the U.S as agricultural laborers. Even though there were other Filipinos who came as Pensionados under the sponsorship of the U.S government, most of the early Filipinos who immigrated to the U.S came in search of better opportunities and ended up working in plantations in Hawaii and California. “Two categories of Filipinos arrived during the first wave: students and laborers” (Lee, p. 146). One difference that they have from other Asian immigrants is that they had a familiarity and knowledge of American culture and the American people before coming to the U.S. Since the U.S also colonized Philippines after it had been handed over by Spain, it had imposed its rule according to American concepts. Americanization, Modernity, and the Second Generation through the 1930s
In 1926, the journal Survey Graphic featured the autobiography of Kazuo Kawai, a young Japanese American who had immigrated to the United States at the age of six. Although not native-born, he was presented as an exemplar of the second-generation experience. Kawai said that life as an Am^icanized person ofjapanese ancestry had been difficult and confusing. During his high school years, he identified with American culture and did not connect with 5 classmates whom he viewed as overly ’Japanesy" In college, however, where he was no -longer surrounded by other Japanese Americans, he grew increasingly self-conscious about &his racial "otherness.” "[For] the first time," said Kawai:
I felt myself becoming identified with Japan, and began to realize that I was Japanese ...What would I be able to do in Japan?... I couldn't speak the language except for a silly baby-talk ... I didn't know any of the customs or traditions of Japan/'1 He continued, “Where did I belong?... in language, in thought, in ideals, in custom, in everything, I was American. But America wouldn't have me... Once I was American, but America made a foreigner out of me—Not a Japanese, but a foreigner—a foreigner to any country for I am just as much a foreigner to Japan as to America.2

Approximately 56.6 Million as of July 1, 2015. (about 18% of the U.S. population & constantly

65% are of Mexican background, 9% Puerto Rican, 3.5% Cuban. The rest are grouped as ‘other’
including the Caribbean people, South Americans, and Central Americans (Pew Research Center).
Of the 15+ million of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. approximately 10 million are Hispanic
immigrants of which 7 million are of Mexican nationality (Pew Research Center).
More than half of the Latino/Hispanic American population resides in these three states: California,
Texas, and Florida.
“California had the largest Hispanic population of any state (15.2 million) in 2015. Texas had the largest
numeric increase within the Hispanic population since July 1, 2014. New Mexico had the highest
percentage of Hispanics at 48.0 percent” (U.S. Census Bureau).
Stewart County in southwest Georgia experienced the most growth in the Hispanic population since
2000, growing 1,754% over 13 years (Pew Research Center).

What is “Latino?” A Latino is someone from Latin America.
What is “Hispanic?” A Hispanic is an “Hispano parlante” which translates into a Spanish-speaking
individual.
Why both terms? Both terms are used interchangeably in order to try to include as many Latin Ethnic
groups as possible.
Which one is used over the other depends on different parts of the country. Usually, Latino is
predominantly used as a term in the East Coast and Hispanic is used in the West Coast, even though
either term is being applied interchangeably nowadays.
Why does the government prefers “Latino” over “Hispanic?” It simply correlates to the federal
government being on the East Coast and using the term “Latino.”

Because of the long colonial history of Filipinos and the highly Americanized climate of postco-
lonial Philippines, many scholars from various disciplines have speculated that colonialism and its
legacies may play major roles in Filipino emigration to the United States. However, there are no
known empirical studies in psychology that specifically investigate whether colonialism and its
effects have influenced the psychological experiences of Filipino American immigrants prior to their
arrival in the United States. Further, there is no existing empirical study that specifically investigates
the extent to which colonialism and its legacies continue to influence Filipino American immigrants’
mental health. Thus, using interviews (N ! 6) and surveys (N ! 219) with Filipino American
immigrants, two studies found that colonialism and its consequences are important factors to
consider when conceptualizing the psychological experiences of Filipino American immigrants.
Specifically, the findings suggest that (a) Filipino American immigrants experienced ethnic and
cultural denigration in the Philippines prior to their U.S. arrival, (b) ethnic and cultural denigration
in the Philippines and in the United States may lead to the development of colonial mentality (CM),
and (c) that CM may have negative mental health consequences among Filipino American immi-
grants. The two studies’ findings suggest that the Filipino American immigration experience cannot
be completely captured by the voluntary immigrant narrative, as they provide empirical support to
the notion that the Filipino American immigration experience needs to be understood in the context
of colonialism and its most insidious psychological legacy— CM.

Filipinos have one of the longest histories of immigration to the
United States, dating back to 1587 when Filipino slaves aboard
Spanish galleon ships landed in what is now known as Morro Bay,
California—making Filipinos the first Asians on U.S. soil (Cor-
dova, 1983). The first Asian settlement in the United States was
also established by Filipino immigrants— escapees from Spanish
galleon ships—in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1763 (Espina, 1988).
These early settlements were very small, however, and thus they
do not account for the large numbers of Filipinos in the country
today. Indeed, the 2010 Census reported that there are currently 3.4
million Filipinos in the United States, 1.7 million of whom are
foreign born, making them the third largest American immigrant
group next to Mexicans and Chinese (Hoeffel, Rastogi, Kim, &
Shahid, 2012).

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe
free," wrote Emma Lazarus in 1883. Inscribed on a bronze plaque at the
base of the Statue of Liberty at the entrance to New York Harbor, these
lines expressed the promise of "the land ofliberty" for generations of im-
migrants to the United States.
During the 1980s, more immigrants arrived in the United States than
in any other decade in history. Yet, unlike millions of their predecessors,
few of them were welcomed by Lady Liberty and few came from Europe.
Most were migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean who had
traveled north, not west, to reach the United States, and crossed borders,
not oceans, to arrive at its shores.
How this nation of immigrants deals with this new wave of immi-
grants from the south may well shape its domestic history and hemi-
spheric relations during the twenty-first century. It may also force the
United States of America to rethink what it means to be "American."
These new immigrants have made the United States the fifth largest
Spanish-speaking country in the world. Today, it has the hemisphere's
largest Puerto Rican city, second largest concentrations of Cubans, Sal-
vadorans, Haitians, and Jamaicans, and fourth largest Mexican metrop-
olis. People of Latin American origin have surpassed African-Americans

as the nation's largest minority group. Their concentrations in such large
states as California, Florida, New York, and Texas-and in some of the
country's biggest cities-will increase their social and political impact

OVERVIEW
People of Mexican heritage are a very diverse group geo-
graphically, historically, and culturally and are not easy to
describe. Although no specific set of characteristics can
fully describe people of Mexican heritage, some common-
alities distinguish them as an ethnic group, with many
regional variations that reflect subcultures in Mexico and
in the United States. A common term used to describe
Spanish-speaking populations in the United States,
including people of Mexican heritage, is Hispanic.
However, the term can be misleading and can encompass
many different people clustered together owing to a com-
mon heritage and lineage from Spain. Many Hispanic
people prefer to be identified by descriptors more specific
to their cultural heritage, such as Mexican, Mexican
American, Latin American, Spanish American, Chicano,
Latino, or Ladino. Therefore, when referring to Mexican
Americans, use that phrase instead of Hispanic or Latino
(Vázquez, 2001). As a broad ethnic group, people of
Mexican heritage often refer to themselves as la raza,
which means “the race.” The Spanish word for race has a
different meaning than the American interpretation of
race. The concept of la raza has brought people together
from separate worlds to make families and is about inclu-
sion (Vázquez, 2000).
HERITAGE AND RESIDENCE
Mexico, with a population of 107,449,525 (CIA, 2007), is
a blend of Spanish white and Indian, Native American,
Middle Eastern, and African. Mexican Americans are
descendants of Spanish and other European whites;
Aztec, Mayan, and other Central American Indians; and
Inca and other South American Indians as well as people
from Africa (Schmal & Madrer, 2007). Some individuals
can trace their heritage to North American Indian tribes
in the southwestern part of the United States.
Mexico City, one of the largest cities in the world, has
a population of over 20 million. Mexico is undergoing
rapid changes in business and health-care practices.
Undoubtedly, these changes have accelerated and will
continue to accelerate with the passage of the North
American Free Trade Agreement as people are more able
to move across the border to seek employment and edu-
cational opportunities.
Historically, people of Mexican heritage lived on the
land that is now known as the southwestern United
States for generations, long before the first white settlers
came to the territory. By 1853, approximately 80,000
Spanish-speaking settlers lived in the area lost by Mexico
during the Texas Rebellion, the Mexican War, and the
Gadsden Purchase. After the northern part of Mexico was
annexed to the United States, the settlers were not offi-
cially considered immigrants but were often viewed as
foreigners by incoming white Americans. By 1900,
Mexican Americans numbered approximately 200,000.

This chapter profiles Latinos, a racially and culturally diverse ethnic group. A brief look at history, cultural values, and demographic trends is included. A case study is provided for the integration of material in a therapeutic context.
The Spanish, Portuguese, Indians, Asians, and Africans
The Western world’s Latinos are la raza, which means, “the race” or “the people.” Places of origin among Latinos are diverse and varied: Puerto Ricans (Puertorriquenos), Cubans (Cubanos), Central Americans and South Americans, Latin Americans (which include Dominicans [Dominicanos]), and Mexican Americans (Mejicanos).
The federal government defines Hispanic or Latino as a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race (Ennis, Rios-Vargas, & Albert, 2011). Novas (1994) clarified that for many Latinos, Hispanic represents a bureaucratic and government census term.” According to Hochschild and Powell (2008), during the 19th century, people who, now in the 21st century are considered to be Latinos and Hispanics, were not regarded by the Census as distinct from whites. In 1930, however, change was evident with an emergent classification of Mexican American. The Census Bureau added “Mexican” to the available color or race choices. Census takers were told that Mexican laborers were somewhat difficult to classify but could be racially located by virtue of their geographic location. The Census director at the time stated, “In order to obtain separate figures for this racial group, it has been decided that all persons born in Mexico, or having parents born in Mexico, who are definitely not white, Negro, Indian, Chinese, or Japanese, should be returned as Mexican” (Hochschild & Powell, 2008).
Increases in the Mexican population, the 1924 Immigration Act, which denied permanent residency to nonwhites, the Great Depression, and racial segregation accompanied by violence were among the weighty factors influencing the discourse about racial classification at the time and led to the Census Bureau’s retreat from classifying the Mexican race. In 1936, the census director stated, “’Mexicans are Whites and must be classified as ‘White’” (Hochschild & Powell, 2008).
The term Latino or Latina, depending on gender, is widely used and refers to persons with Spanish ancestry. Many Latinos prefer to be called by their country of origin.
The racial diversity among Latinos is very old and connected to political movements, slavery, family, conquest, defeat, geographic movement, love, and war. The term Hispanic .
Mexicanos
During the early 20th century, millions of Mexican immigrants came to the US due to violence and lack of opportunities in Mexico. These newer immigrants differed from earlier Mexican immigrants in that they were attracted to agricultural, mining, and railroad jobs that were unskilled and seasonal. As a result, they lived in overcrowded ethnic enclaves with poor sanitation. While initially planning to return to Mexico, limited jobs and education in the US made social mobility unlikely. Racial attitudes and anti-Mexican sentiment led to discrimination and isolation of Mexican immigrants. The Great Depression further worsened conditions, though Mexican immigrants began organizing for labor rights and civil protections.

OVERVIEW
People of Mexican heritage are a very diverse group geo-
graphically, historically, and culturally and are not easy to
describe. Although no specific set of characteristics can
fully describe people of Mexican heritage, some common-
alities distinguish them as an ethnic group, with many
regional variations that reflect subcultures in Mexico and
in the United States. A common term used to describe
Spanish-speaking populations in the United States,
including people of Mexican heritage, is Hispanic.
However, the term can be misleading and can encompass
many different people clustered together owing to a com-
mon heritage and lineage from Spain. Many Hispanic
people prefer to be identified by descriptors more specific
to their cultural heritage, such as Mexican, Mexican
American, Latin American, Spanish American, Chicano,
Latino, or Ladino. Therefore, when referring to Mexican
Americans, use that phrase instead of Hispanic or Latino
(Vázquez, 2001). As a broad ethnic group, people of
Mexican heritage often refer to themselves as la raza,
which means “the race.” The Spanish word for race has a
different meaning than the American interpretation of
race. The concept of la raza has brought people together
from separate worlds to make families and is about inclu-
sion (Vázquez, 2000).
HERITAGE AND RESIDENCE
Mexico, with a population of 107,449,525 (CIA, 2007), is
a blend of Spanish white and Indian, Native American,
Middle Eastern, and African. Mexican Americans are
descendants of Spanish and other European whites;
Aztec, Mayan, and other Central American Indians; and
Inca and other South American Indians as well as people
from Africa (Schmal & Madrer, 2007). Some individuals
can trace their heritage to North American Indian tribes
in the southwestern part of the United States.
Mexico City, one of the largest cities in the world, has
a population of over 20 million. Mexico is undergoing
rapid changes in business and health-care practices.
Undoubtedly, these changes have accelerated and will
continue to accelerate with the passage of the North
American Free Trade Agreement as people are more able
to move across the border to seek employment and edu-
cational opportunities.
Historically, people of Mexican heritage lived on the
land that is now known as the southwestern United
States for generations, long before the first white settlers
came to the territory. By 1853, approximately 80,000
Spanish-speaking settlers lived in the area lost by Mexico
during the Texas Rebellion, the Mexican War, and the
Gadsden Purchase. After the northern part of Mexico was
annexed to the United States, the settlers were not offi-
cially considered immigrants but were often viewed as
foreigners by incoming white Americans. By 1900,
Mexican Americans numbered approximately 200,000.

This chapter profiles Latinos, a racially and culturally diverse ethnic group. A brief look at history, cultural values, and demographic trends is included. A case study is provided for the integration of material in a therapeutic context.
The Spanish, Portuguese, Indians, Asians, and Africans
The Western world’s Latinos are la raza, which means, “the race” or “the people.” Places of origin among Latinos are diverse and varied: Puerto Ricans (Puertorriquenos), Cubans (Cubanos), Central Americans and South Americans, Latin Americans (which include Dominicans [Dominicanos]), and Mexican Americans (Mejicanos).
The federal government defines Hispanic or Latino as a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race (Ennis, Rios-Vargas, & Albert, 2011). Novas (1994) clarified that for many Latinos, Hispanic represents a bureaucratic and government census term.” According to Hochschild and Powell (2008), during the 19th century, people who, now in the 21st century are considered to be Latinos and Hispanics, were not regarded by the Census as distinct from whites. In 1930, however, change was evident with an emergent classification of Mexican American. The Census Bureau added “Mexican” to the available color or race choices. Census takers were told that Mexican laborers were somewhat difficult to classify but could be racially located by virtue of their geographic location. The Census director at the time stated, “In order to obtain separate figures for this racial group, it has been decided that all persons born in Mexico, or having parents born in Mexico, who are definitely not white, Negro, Indian, Chinese, or Japanese, should be returned as Mexican” (Hochschild & Powell, 2008).
Increases in the Mexican population, the 1924 Immigration Act, which denied permanent residency to nonwhites, the Great Depression, and racial segregation accompanied by violence were among the weighty factors influencing the discourse about racial classification at the time and led to the Census Bureau’s retreat from classifying the Mexican race. In 1936, the census director stated, “’Mexicans are Whites and must be classified as ‘White’” (Hochschild & Powell, 2008).
The term Latino or Latina, depending on gender, is widely used and refers to persons with Spanish ancestry. Many Latinos prefer to be called by their country of origin.
The racial diversity among Latinos is very old and connected to political movements, slavery, family, conquest, defeat, geographic movement, love, and war. The term Hispanic .
Mexicanos
During the early 20th century, millions of Mexican immigrants came to the US due to violence and lack of opportunities in Mexico. These newer immigrants differed from earlier Mexican immigrants in that they were attracted to agricultural, mining, and railroad jobs that were unskilled and seasonal. As a result, they lived in overcrowded ethnic enclaves with poor sanitation. While initially planning to return to Mexico, limited jobs and education in the US made social mobility unlikely. Racial attitudes and anti-Mexican sentiment led to discrimination and isolation of Mexican immigrants. The Great Depression further worsened conditions, though Mexican immigrants began organizing for labor rights and civil protections.
Hispanic Culture And Mexican-Americans

However, since I was diagnosed later in life, I spent the bulk of my school-age years developing strategies to deal with what I thought were typical memory issues that everyone faced. By the time I entered university I knew that unless I physically wrote out my notes with a pen on paper, I would not remember them because it was too easy for me to type notes while my mind was ‘elsewhere’ not paying attention. If I needed to remember a list of things, I needed to write it somewhere I would see it repeatedly, like the back of my hand or the leg of my jeans; a list on paper in my pocket was quickly forgotten – out of sight out of mind.
The working memory model, developed by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974, focuses on the idea that working memory has a limited capacity to store information temporarily as it processes where the information is to go, such as into long-term memory to action (Baddeley, 2003). The information that is gathered falls into different subsets of the overall system, determined by the central executive: the phonological loop (spoken or written information) or visuospatial sketchpad (visual or spatial information) or the episodic buffer (a general category) (Mcleod, 2012).
Issues with short-term memory loss as related to ADHD and the working memory model comes from reported deficits in the ability to control attention and an oversaturation of information input into the central executive (Ortega et al., 2020; Mcleod, 2012). This results in information input being disorganized and not always making it to the long-term memory. Meaning, my central executive may not function in the manner in which Baddeley (2003) suggests it should and it can get easily overwhelmed, resulting in the interference of informational input and encoding. Issues with short-term memory are often considered to be as a result of decay or interference, though decay is difficult to prove due to issues with testability and overall understanding of the cause (Jonides et al., 2008).
It was explained to me that many people who have unknowingly existed with ADHD throughout their lives have developed both conscious and unconscious strategies to manage any cognitive processing issues they deal with. I mentioned writing things down as a conscious strategy that I have implemented over the years. Another strategy that I’ve used and continue to practice is repeating someone’s name back to them when being introduced. The act of saying their name out loud forces my attention to be focused on that singular piece of information, allowing for a better chance of it being appropriately encoded and therefore retrieved. Another option is to use a multisensory strategy when possible, allowing for auditory and visual input of the same information. Saying someone’s name out loud and reading it on a name tag for example. I’ve also asked people in the past .

- 1. The cultures and heritage of Mexican Americans and that of Filipino Americans is quite similar in one way or another. The reason behind this is because the two countries were both colonies of Spain, “Spain established colonial control over the people of Philippines in the sixteenth century” (Min, p. 180). Actually, an interesting fact is that the Philippines was colonized by Spain for many years than Mexico, for 333 years from 1521 to 1898. As such, these Filipino Americans and most other Spanish-speaking communities such as Mexican Americans share several aspects including language, food, religion and family togetherness. To some extent, this has contributed to the less recognition and misperceptions of most people that the Filipino Americans are not part of the Asian American community due to their social context and cultural alignment to Latin Americans. A similarity that Filipino Americans have with the other Asian immigrants is that most of the early immigrants settled in the U.S as agricultural laborers. Even though there were other Filipinos who came as Pensionados under the sponsorship of the U.S government, most of the early Filipinos who immigrated to the U.S came in search of better opportunities and ended up working in plantations in Hawaii and California. “Two categories of Filipinos arrived during the first wave: students and laborers” (Lee, p. 146). One difference that they have from other Asian immigrants is that they had a familiarity and knowledge of American culture and the American people before coming to the U.S. Since the U.S also colonized Philippines after it had been handed over by Spain, it had imposed its rule according to American concepts.
