An introductory course to how, from historical and present perspectives images
mediation shape the perception of social and creative spaces. We will examine a variety of
socio-cultural constructs through the critical perspectives offered by Berger’s Ways of Seeing
and Von Daniken’s Chariots of The Gods.
An interdisciplinary theme/issue driven project based course where first year students look at
how knowledge is created in different disciplines and contexts through the foundational skills of
inquiry, investigation, and discovery.
Image and Identity; Places and Spaces; Social Impact; and Sustainability. These are
intentionally broad and accommodate a variety of topics.
This class is both an introduction to the cultural role of images as well as an exploration of the
“Ancient Alien” hypothesis and how it has been approached in contemporary society. Using
Erich Von Daniken’s writings we will examine the ideas about plurality of the words, the notion
that extraterrestrial beings had guided human development and the “evidence” provided through
myth, archeology, literature, and art. Students will explore the many ways in which religion and
mythology intersect at times agreeing and many times in disagreement about the role of
supernatural beings in human development. Are these ideas sound science or pseudo science?
How the mistrust of the government is fuelling a movement that seems to confront, religion,
myth, science, and government cover-up.

According to Michel de Certeau, “what the map cuts up, the story cuts across”
(1984:129). This pithy phrase evokes a postcolonial world crisscrossed by trans-
national narratives, diaspora af� liations, and, especially, the movement and mul-
tiple migrations of people, sometimes voluntary, but often economically propelled
and politically coerced. In order to keep pace with such a world, we now think
of “place” as a heavily traf� cked intersection, a port of call and exchange, instead
of a circumscribed territory. A boundary is more like a membrane than a wall.
In current cultural theory, “location” is imagined as an itinerary instead of a � xed
point. Our understanding of “local context” expands to encompass the historical,
dynamic, often traumatic, movements of people, ideas, images, commodities, and
capital. It is no longer easy to sort out the local from the global: transnational
circulations of images get reworked on the ground and redeployed for local,
tactical struggles. And global � ows simultaneously are encumbered and energized
by these local makeovers. We now are keenly aware that the “local” is a leaky,
contingent construction, and that global forces are taken up, struggled over, and
refracted for site-speci� c purposes. The best of the new cultural theory distin-
guishes itself from apolitical celebrations of mobility, � ow, and easy border cross-
ings by carefully tracking the transitive circuits of power and the political
economic pressure points that monitor the migrations of people, chann.

We've all the heard about the so-called "Nature - Nurture" controversy and are familiar with such sayings as "The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree," or "Like Father, Like son," or he's "A Chip off the Old Block." In fact, the "apple" saying has been found in more than a dozen different cultures in (of course) different languages. Indeed, the notion that "human nature" largely affects what we choose to do and how we do it has been embraced by people who otherwise differ in fundamental ways. Eugenics, for example, has flourished in democratic, facist, communist countries, has been embraced by people of different races, ethnicities, religious backgrounds (even atheists), and social classes. For it to resonate with such different categories is testimony to the power and seductiveness of the ideas.
Historically, much in popular culture seemed to lean toward the "nature" side of the equation. Cartoons such as Dick Tracy (all the bad guys were biologically deformed), and Lil Abner (drawing on the "white trash studies of eugenicists), movies such as Frankenstein, Tobacco Road, and GATTICA, as well as countless television shows and science fiction short stories and novels emphasize this theme. What do you see in popular culture these days to support the "nature" argument. Do you find it persuasive? Why or why not?

How to write your class essays
You are responsible for five responses to the five primary source books. Each of these should be around 750 words long, double spaced. They should consist of three parts.
1. Exposition. Your first paragraph should describe the book, and briefly explain what you have decided about one or more of questions that I have posed.
2. Development. The middle of your essay should explain your answer. It should offer details about the main arguments and content of the book to support your claims. It should also offer background from Give Me Liberty!
3. Conclusion. Your last paragraph should recapitulate your argument, and add some final point that you think bolsters your perspective.
Don't be reluctant to use phases like "in this essay I argue . . . " or "I think that . . . " or "in conclusion, I believe that . . . "
Quote from the book when you find some passage that illustrates your points. Use your Give Me Liberty! textbook to provide background, or to add additional quotes. But don't over-quote from either of the books. Use your own words. And don't just copy passages from the books or other sources verbatim as if they were your own, that's plagiarism.
As for your reference style, just use a paragraph format (Bellamy, 125) or (Foner, 353).
Your teaching assistants will grade your papers from 100 to zero.
High grades (90+) will go to focused papers that emphasize a strong argument backed by clear references. These papers also pay attention to correct spelling and grammar.
Medium grades (80-99) will go to competent papers that touch on the questions, but with less focus, organization, or reference backing.

Collaboration is multidimensional and can occur in both face-to-face encounters and electronically for exchange of views and ideas. Collaboration is a planned or an unplanned engagement that takes place between individuals or teams of individuals, whether in-person or mediated by technology, where information is exchanged in some way (either explicitly, i.e. verbally or written, or implicitly, i.e. through shared understanding of gestures, emotions, etc.), and often occur across different roles (i.e. physician and nurse) to deliver patient care (Weir, 2011).
With reference to health informatics, a systematic review of literature, (Eikey, Reddy, & Kuziemsky, 2015), methods of collaborative work in health setting include telemedicine application, EMR, HER, EPR, CPOE, mobile technology, (PDAs, pagers, mobile phones), Web 2.0 applications, internet, online health communities, picture archives, and communication system, medicine dispensing devices and barcode systems, HIT and any other specific application. The authors further presented the "collaboration space model", to help researchers study collaboration and technology in healthcare.
In my healthcare setting, we use several health informatics methods such as pagers, mobile phones, communication system, medicine dispensing devices and barcode systems, but one that has been much applauded during this COVID 19 era is Telemedicine. I work in a psych/detox hospital.
We found telemedicine very relevant based on research results indicating that people with mental health problems are twice more likely to be frequent users of hospital emergency departments (Hunt, Weber, Showstack, Colby, & Callaham, 2006). The use of the emergency department for routine clinical care poses a huge strain on the health system because of the high cost of treatment, restricting use of the emergency department for admission of patients who really require admissions. This is also because of the associated complexity and pressure to admit patients for inpatient care (Institute of Medicine (U.S.), 2007).
Recent technological advancements have led to easy access to videoconferencing utilizing personal computers or tablets. A few research work has also been carried out using telemedicine. Patients are encouraged to check their vital signs using personal devices. Also, the introduction of asynchronous store-and-forward approaches enable clinicians review their patient without direct interaction. Also, telehomecare enables clinicians monitor their patients in their own homes (Yellowlees et al., 2010). According to Michel de Certeau, “what the map cuts up, the story cuts across”
(1984:129). This pithy phrase evokes a postcolonial world crisscrossed by trans-
national narratives, diaspora af� liations, and, especially, the movement and mul-
tiple migrations of people, sometimes voluntary, but often economically propelled
and politically coerced. In order to keep pace with such a world, we now think
of “place” as a heavily traf� cked intersection, a port of call and exchange, instead
of a circumscribed territory. A boundary is more like a membrane than a wall.
In current cultural theory, “location” is imagined as an itinerary instead of a � xed
point. Our understanding of “local context” expands to encompass the historical,
dynamic, often traumatic, movements of people, ideas, images, commodities, and
capital. It is no longer easy to sort out the local from the global: transnational
circulations of images get reworked on the ground and redeployed for local,
tactical struggles. And global � ows simultaneously are encumbered and energized
by these local makeovers. We now are keenly aware that the “local” is a leaky,
contingent construction, and that global forces are taken up, struggled over, and
refracted for site-speci� c purposes. The best of the new cultural theory distin-
guishes itself from apolitical celebrations of mobility, � ow, and easy border cross-
ings by carefully tracking the transitive circuits of power and the political
economic pressure points that monitor the migrations of people, chann.

We've all the heard about the so-called "Nature - Nurture" controversy and are familiar with such sayings as "The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree," or "Like Father, Like son," or he's "A Chip off the Old Block." Indeed, the notion that "human nature" largely affects what we choose to do and how we do it has been embraced by people who otherwise differ in fundamental ways. Eugenics, for example, has flourished in democratic, facist, communist countries, has been embraced by people of different races, ethnicities, religious backgrounds (even atheists), and social classes. For it to resonate with such different categories is testimony to the power and seductiveness of the ideas.
Historically, much in popular culture seemed to lean toward the "nature" side of the equation. Don't be reluctant to use phases like "in this essay I argue . . . " or "I think that . . . " or "in conclusion, I believe that . . . "
Quote from the book when you find some passage that illustrates your points. Use your Give Me Liberty! textbook to provide background, or to add additional quotes. But don't over-quote from either of the books. Use your own words. And don't just copy passages from the books or other sources verbatim as if they were your own, that's plagiarism.
As for your reference style, just use a paragraph format (Bellamy, 125) or (Foner, 353).
Your teaching assistants will grade your papers from 100 to zero.

As someone with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), I have struggled with short-term memory issues for my entire life. However, since I was diagnosed later in life, I spent the bulk of my school-age years developing strategies to deal with what I thought were typical memory issues that everyone faced. By the time I entered university I knew that unless I physically wrote out my notes with a pen on paper, I would not remember them because it was too easy for me to type notes while my mind was ‘elsewhere’ not paying attention. If I needed to remember a list of things, I needed to write it somewhere I would see it repeatedly, like the back of my hand or the leg of my jeans; a list on paper in my pocket was quickly forgotten – out of sight out of mind.
The working memory model, developed by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974, focuses on the idea that working memory has a limited capacity to store information temporarily as it processes where the information is to go, such as into long-term memory to action (Baddeley, 2003). The information that is gathered falls into different subsets of the overall system, determined by the central executive: the phonological loop (spoken or written information) or visuospatial sketchpad (visual or spatial information) or the episodic buffer (a general category) (Mcleod, 2012).
Issues with short-term memory loss as related to ADHD and the working memory model comes from reported deficits in the ability to control attention and an oversaturation of information input into the central executive (Ortega et al., 2020; Mcleod, 2012). This results in information input being disorganized and not always making it to the long-term memory. Meaning, my central executive may not function in the manner in which Baddeley (2003) suggests it should and it can get easily overwhelmed, resulting in the interference of informational input and encoding. Issues with short-term memory are often considered to be as a result of decay or interference, though decay is difficult to prove due to issues with testability and overall understanding of the cause (Jonides et al., 2008).
It was explained to me that many people who have unknowingly existed with ADHD throughout their lives have developed both conscious and unconscious strategies to manage any cognitive processing issues they deal with. I mentioned writing things down as a conscious strategy that I have implemented over the years. Another strategy that I’ve used and continue to practice is repeating someone’s name back to them when being introduced. The act of saying their name out loud forces my attention to be focused on that singular piece of information, allowing for a better chance of it being appropriately encoded and therefore retrieved. Another option is to use a multisensory strategy when possible, allowing for auditory and visual input of the same information. Saying someone’s name out loud and reading it on a name tag for example. I’ve also asked people in the past .

The meaning of this is probably meant that Federalists were unsure of human nature and government must resist the passion of the public.
Another reason is that Anti-Federalists wanted to amend the Consitution with a Bill of Rights. the first version of the federal government was quite weak. A mojr purpos of the Constitution was to grant more power to the federal government. The anti-federalists wanted assurances that this new and more powerful government wouldn't be out of control. Quote from "A Farmer" January 11, 1788: Rouse up, my friends, a matter of infinite importance is before you on the carpet, soon to be decided in your convention: The New Constitution. Seize the happy moment. Secure to yourselves and your posterity the jewel Liberty, which has cost you so much blood and treasure, by a well regulated Bill of Rights, from the encroachments of men in power."
Federalist believe that a Bill of Rights is completely unnecessary and danger. Quote:"It has been several times truly remarked, that bills of rights are in their origin, stipulations between kings and their subjects, abridgments of prerogative in favor of privilege, reservations of rights not surrendered to the prince. Such was Magna Carta, obtained by the Barons, sword in hand, from king John ... It is evident, therefore, that according to their primitive signification, they have no application to constitutions professedly founded upon the power of the people, and executed by their immediate representatives and servants. Here, in strictness, the people surrender nothing, and as they retain everything, they have no need of particular reservations." How is having a Bill of Rights dangerous? If states and individual people have individuals right the Bill of Rights, then more people would agree, but Federalists think only more trouble will come.
Being a Federalists isn't something anyone wants to waste their time doing. If one wants a central government with no Bill of rights, fine.

harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.

As our course materials make clear, ideas/images of heroes or heroic figures are pervasive and seem to have both universal and unique (cultural, temporal, geographic, etc.) characteristics and meanings. For your research paper, I would like you to focus on one specific character or individual who has been, or arguably could be, proclaimed a heroic (or at least celebrated) figure. The “hero” you choose may be most frequently encountered in oral tradition (myth, folktale, legend, personal experience narratives, etc.), print (classical mythology, novels, children’s literature, written history, comic books, etc.) or visual/multi-media formats (art works, film, television, Internet, etc.). In all likelihood, crucial understandings (current or past) of any particular hero/celebrity will be found in multiple forms of communication and representation. For example, how many different ways can one come to “know” Hercules, George Washington, or Luke Skywalker? What hero figure, heroic ideal, or celebrity will you specifically focus on? What data/modes of communication will you deal with? Why, based on your preliminary research, is this important to study?
