Introduction Having the privilege to serve in the military has allowed this writer
the opportunity to be exposed to the pluralistic society in a way which has exposed
him to the beauty of the diversity enjoyed in American culture. One aspect of said
diversity is the interaction which has taken place amongst the Christian and various
world religions who also wear the same uniform in defense of America. It was the
pleasure of the writer to attend a local synagogue in which his Jewish brothers and
sisters welcomed him with open arms. The local congregation of Jewish believers
went out of their way in order to ensure their newest visitor understood the flow of
service and the significance of the ritual which took place on the first Shabbat or
Sabbath of the month. The following essay will serve to detail the worship

Music adds an extra layer of depth that makes the film that much better. For
example, throughout the film there are passionate musical breaks spotlighting
performances by the four main musicians. Davis started his performance by
standing with his guitar in hand in a calm manner. Being just a couple of feet away

Not only just for these two characters, other minor characters were able to cope
with their loss of identity through different mechanisms. Hope is a reassuring
feeling reflected in both Amabelle and Oscar. Regardless of how oppressed and
different they were, they were able to have hope, knowing that it would be a strong
foundation to live on. Amabelle rebuilt her identity through hope by remembering
her past. Her memories acted as a resistance against oppression and remained

Differing from Kafka, Ionesco uses the theme of alienation as the reason for Berenger
s resistance, in Rhinoceros. Alcoholism is a major cause of his alienation, in Act
Three, Berenger considers alcohol as the reason for his isolation and subsequent
inability to transform. When conversing with Dudard, he says [A]lcohol is good for
epidemics. It immunizes you ... Jean never touched alcohol. He just pretended to.
Maybe that s why he... perhaps that explains his attitude (Ionesco 1960: 76). This
insinuates that Berenger understands why he does not transform into rhinoceros,
identifying his own alienation. Only his drinking serves to inoculate him from this
epidemic and from the side effect of this epidemic, the powerful loneliness inherent in
Ionesco blamed the world around him for giving him nightmares, thus suggesting that
his fiction was inspired by reality. He went on to say that the very act of denouncing
the nightmare may free the world of them (Lupas 2014: 87). Berenger attempts to
actively resist the nightmare of transforming, but fails, leaving him alone in a world
of rhinoceros. Thus, Ionesco represents the rhinoceros as history s ultimate nightmare.
The relationship between Berenger and Jean is also important in highlighting the
protagonist s alienation. In the opening of the play, Berenger is described as
unshaven and hatless, with unkempt hair and creased clothes; everything about
him indicates negligence (Ionesco 1960: 4). He is compared to the character of
Jean, who arrives very fastidiously dressed: brown suit, red tie, stiff collar, brown
hat (4). Jean s appearance sets him as a stereotypical man of the time, contrasting
with Berenger, who is an untidy, alcoholic that cannot conform to social
expectations. From the outset we find little in Berenger s life that would appear to
be worth defending (Danner 1979: 209). The absence of hope in Berenger, at the
beginning, immediately alienates him from the rest of the characters. Ionesco s

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is the complete immobility of one vocal fold.
According to Sapienza and Ruddy (2013), 90% of vocal fold paralysis that occurs is
unilateral and caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system (p. 189). Vocal fold
paralysis is typically considered a symptom of a disease or neurologic disruption. In
one study, it was found that vocal fold paralysis was caused by surgical trauma,
tumors or neoplasms, unknown or idiopathic factors, trauma, central nervous system
dysfunction, radiation, inflammatory, cardiovascular, and other causes (Chen, Jen,
Wang, Lee, Lin, 2007). Symptoms of unilateral vocal fold paralysis may include:
aphonia, abnormal vocal quality (breathy, hoarse, and/or strained), and dysphagia.
Onset of UVFP may be life altering as the individual has to find compensatory
strategies for voicing or even alternative methods of communication. The individual
is also left susceptible to aspiration due to the lack of airway protection. These factors
make it critical to diagnose the impairment so as to provide the appropriate treatment.
DIAGNOSIS
Vocal fold paralysis is diagnosed by an otolaryngologist through the use of
endoscopy, laryngostroboscopy, and laryngeal electromyography. Two types of

Ever since I was young I have always had an aptitude to flexibility, but never quite
the level I strived for. This was partly do to my involvement in gymnastics as a girl
and, later on, partly due to my need to stretch often to help my Fibromyalgia.
Achieving a higher level of flexibility has always been a goal in my mind, kept on
the back burner for when the time was right, and that time came when this assignment
was given to the class. It was then, at the beginning of the semester, that I decided to
improve my flexibility to the pointwhere I could do a full split. Along with that goal,
I chose to address my lack of upper body strength as well. Specifically, I wanted to
transition from my starting point of being able to do twenty five knee push ups to a

Summary: In book IX of Natural History, Pliny speaks about fishes and other
marine animals. And in this passage , he describes different types of shell fish
along with the contributions of some types to luxury and corruption. In the
beginning of this passage, Pliny starts off by speaking about sea urchins where he
describes them as creatures with spines that can only go forward by rolling over
their spines. Which explains why they are often found with worn off spines.
According to Pliny, Echinus cidaris is the name of sea urchins with the longest
spines and those with the smallest spines are called cups. Sea urchins lay bitter
tasting eggs in clutches of five, and they have different transparent colors after they

However, there is another method that sea urchins can move, and that is using

where they respond by clutching to stones for stability. Unfortunately, there is no
clear scientific evidence supporting the forecasting claim about sea urchins.
However, Pliny s claim regarding sailors using that behavior of the sea urchins as a
sign to prepare for rough waves was reported on several occasions as part of
folklore (Copenhaver, 2015) . Later in this passage, when Pliny was speaking about
snails in section 101, he mentioned that they belong to the same family as sea
urchins. However, according to modern taxonomic research, sea urchins and snails
belong to different phyla, and therefore Pliny s claim is debunked as they thus cannot

known for his depictions of the wartime internmentexperience, many of his paintings
executed while he was confined at the Jerome and Rohwer camps. Sugimoto
represents Japanese Americans who loved the United States and worked so hard for
the country, but were imprisoned and denied their basic rights during World War II.

of the World War II detainment of Japanese Americans, Sugimoto s art turned into
a striking articulation of the American immigrant experience. As a Japanese
American immigrant, Sugimoto also had to face the fierce treatment of the
government during the World War II. Sugimoto and his family were confined to
the temporary internment camp after the Pearl Harbor bombings. Japanese
Americans were treated as threat to the United States after the attack on Pearl

For centuries, humans have analyzed the negative aspects of their own nature that
leads them to falling victim to overindulgence, producing myriads of written pieces
and artwork to depict the creator s portrayal and interpretation. Various forms of
abundance, control, and power are vices that humans are drawn to, utilizing them
with greed and selfish intent in their hearts. Hieronymus Bosch, a Renaissance era
painter from the Netherlands and most popular for his invention of Early
Netherlandish style paint, depicts his take on human s overindulgence of the vices
through a world famous piece titled The Garden of Earthly Delights. Created as a
triptych, a three part painting divided into three separate panels, The Garden tells
the story of humanity s empire, from the pure creation of man, to the corrupted
result of man s overindulgence in the vices. Bosch s heavily references a biblical
story, particularly of Adam and Eve, in this piece, a trait common in Early
Netherlandish paintings. This painting style makes reference to biblical works as
well as heavily emphasizes the use of shadows and light, allowing for the natural
aspects of the landscape, animals, and humans within it to appear more life like. With
the painting s richness in color, detail in linework, and overall composition of the

The title of the book that I read was Bel Canto. Bel Canto was written by Ann
Patchett, and published in 2001. The setting of this work of literature is known to be
in South America; however, the country within the continent is unknown. One theme,
that can be drawn from this work is that a one of the most basic human impulses is
civilizing with other humans. Many people believe that if a group of people were in
captivity, then they would immediately resort to violence and trying to dominate each
other. However, Bel Canto suggest that, if put in that same situation, that the human
impulse would not be violence, but that our first impulse would be to civilize with
one another.
One important but minor character is Mr. Messner. Mr. Messner is the Swiss
representative for the Red Cross, to be the hostage negotiator. The terrorist end up
liking Messner, so he is the only person, in the book, that is allowed to come and go
from the mansion. Being that voice of reason from the outside, is Messner s main
job, because even though he is in the mansion throughout the months, he can still see
the situation objectively. In the last chapter, Messner becomes more of an important
character by giving the readers more sense of urgency, when he keeps reminding the
terrorist that a negotiation needs to happen or else their dystopian society will be
