Mission Statement

Analysis of Mission Statement: The mission statements above clearly state the
purpose and meaning of what social work entails. Not all cases have a happy
ending nor do they have easy or convenient solutions, yet each agency or
program does its best to accommodate and advocate for their clients and their
needs.
Organizational Structure of DSS
 Children and Family Services
K-6 Intervention
 K-6 is an early intervention program
 The social worker provides services to reduce the risk of
  children being removed from their families
 There are currently 8 K-6 social workers,
 There are 5 workers placed in Fresno Unified School District, 1
  placed in Mendota (split between two schools) and 2 working at
  the Fresno Unified project access office
 The K-6 worker also connects with the Department of Probation
  and Mental Health to assist the school and their attending
  families.
 A referral for K-6 services can be opened by
  principals, nurses, teachers, counselor/psychologist, concerne
  d parents/ individuals as well as community based
  organizations.
K-6 Intervention at



   Yokomi Elementary is a science and technology based
    magnet school located in downtown Fresno.

   Children who attend Yokomi are from around the
    neighborhood or from within the Fresno Unified School
    District. Diversity is apparent in terms of socio-economic
    backgrounds and ethnicity.

   The social worker connects with the principal, vice
    principal, office staff, teachers, as well as parents.
K-6 Intervention Continued
   Services available to Yokomi students are: peer
    mediation, socialization, anger management, conflict
    resolution, and conferences with the K-6 social worker.

   Additional after school programs are offered to 5th and 6th
    grade students (Girl Power and Passport to Manhood).
    Which help build confidence, friendship and self-awareness.

   Parenting classes have also been offered in the past at
    Yokomi Elementary School
Populations –at - Risk
   Children who are neglected by parent or guardian.

   Children who experience sexual abuse, emotional
    issues, behavioral problems, social problems, and those
    who are exposed to domestic violence in the home.

   Low-income families.

   Gang affiliated children or families.

   Families who lack the bare necessities for survival
    (shelter, food, water, and safety).
Social Justice Issues
   Poverty

   Low-income families

   Domestic violence

   Limited access to affordable food

   Gang activity

   Immigration
Social work values
   Advocate for groups or people who are not acknowledged or
    misunderstood.

   Help empower individuals who are silenced.

   Poses cultural competency.

    Respect people of different ethnic backgrounds, sexual
    identity, socio-economic background, gender, age, and
    educational level.

   Demand social justice.

   Promote dignity and self- worth of individuals.
Human Rights
   Article 22.
    “Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to
    realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with
    the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights
    indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.”

  Article 25.
(1) “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of
   himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary
   social services, and the right to security in the event of
   unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in
   circumstances beyond his control.
(2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether
   born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.”

  Article 26.
(1) “Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary
   and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and
   professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be
   equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.”
(2) “Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the
   strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote
   understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and
   shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.”
(3)” Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their
   children.”
Human Rights Explored
 Article 22
In connection to the agency and based in the environment the school is in
   and the population being served. Article 22 is a reminder of the rights
   people have as human beings regardless of who they are and what they
   represent. Resources should be made available especially in terms of
   need base.


 Article 25
Living a life with dignity and having the bare necessities is a must for
   survival. No one’s life should be jeopardized if there is help available.


 Article 26
Education is crucial in a child’s developmental life; especially during
  elementary school. The opportunity to attend and succeed should be
  available for all school age children regardless of
  disability, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic background.

Mission Statement DSS: “The Fresno County Children and Family Services: Department of Social “To promote a system of best Services (DSS) serves some practices in partnership with of the most the community, committed dynamic, ethnically and to prevention and early culturally diverse intervention, that ensures communities in the State of child safety, permanence and California. Our programs are stability, family well- designed to promote services being, that is to ensure that individuals proactive, strategic, outcome and families will be safe, self s based and fiscally sufficient, healthy, out of responsible to the children trouble at home, in school or and families served.” at work.” Analysis of Mission Statement: The mission statements above clearly state the purpose and meaning of what social work entails. Not all cases have a happy ending nor do they have easy or convenient solutions, yet each agency or program does its best to accommodate and advocate for their clients and their needs.
  • 3. Organizational Structure of DSS Children and Family Services
  • 4. K-6 Intervention  K-6 is an early intervention program  The social worker provides services to reduce the risk of children being removed from their families  There are currently 8 K-6 social workers,  There are 5 workers placed in Fresno Unified School District, 1 placed in Mendota (split between two schools) and 2 working at the Fresno Unified project access office  The K-6 worker also connects with the Department of Probation and Mental Health to assist the school and their attending families.  A referral for K-6 services can be opened by principals, nurses, teachers, counselor/psychologist, concerne d parents/ individuals as well as community based organizations.
  • 5. K-6 Intervention at  Yokomi Elementary is a science and technology based magnet school located in downtown Fresno.  Children who attend Yokomi are from around the neighborhood or from within the Fresno Unified School District. Diversity is apparent in terms of socio-economic backgrounds and ethnicity.  The social worker connects with the principal, vice principal, office staff, teachers, as well as parents.
  • 6. K-6 Intervention Continued  Services available to Yokomi students are: peer mediation, socialization, anger management, conflict resolution, and conferences with the K-6 social worker.  Additional after school programs are offered to 5th and 6th grade students (Girl Power and Passport to Manhood). Which help build confidence, friendship and self-awareness.  Parenting classes have also been offered in the past at Yokomi Elementary School
  • 7. Populations –at - Risk  Children who are neglected by parent or guardian.  Children who experience sexual abuse, emotional issues, behavioral problems, social problems, and those who are exposed to domestic violence in the home.  Low-income families.  Gang affiliated children or families.  Families who lack the bare necessities for survival (shelter, food, water, and safety).
  • 8. Social Justice Issues  Poverty  Low-income families  Domestic violence  Limited access to affordable food  Gang activity  Immigration
  • 9. Social work values  Advocate for groups or people who are not acknowledged or misunderstood.  Help empower individuals who are silenced.  Poses cultural competency.  Respect people of different ethnic backgrounds, sexual identity, socio-economic background, gender, age, and educational level.  Demand social justice.  Promote dignity and self- worth of individuals.
  • 10. Human Rights  Article 22. “Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.”  Article 25. (1) “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control. (2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.”  Article 26. (1) “Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.” (2) “Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.” (3)” Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.”
  • 11. Human Rights Explored  Article 22 In connection to the agency and based in the environment the school is in and the population being served. Article 22 is a reminder of the rights people have as human beings regardless of who they are and what they represent. Resources should be made available especially in terms of need base.  Article 25 Living a life with dignity and having the bare necessities is a must for survival. No one’s life should be jeopardized if there is help available.  Article 26 Education is crucial in a child’s developmental life; especially during elementary school. The opportunity to attend and succeed should be available for all school age children regardless of disability, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic background.
