The Community Curator: Bridging the Gap Between the Museum and the Public

The relatively new role of Community (or Community Engagement) Curator is still being defined as museums struggle to identify how best to incorporate diverse audiences into their exhibits and programming. This session presents multiple views of how Community Curators position themselves to act as a conduit between the public and museum, developing interpretative materials, bringing external views to the museums attention, or building partnerships between the museum and community groups. Presenters will examine how museums can best interpret curatorial expertise and make space for community voice.

The goals were to build volunteer skills in teaching adults, create connections between generations, and establish the library as a community resource. Anne Markusen - How Do We Know Creative Placemaking is Working?
Ann Markusen is Director of the Arts Economy Initiative and the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and Principal of Markusen Economic Research. She is a researcher, frequent public speaker, and advisor to public agencies, policymakers, businesses, economic developers, and nonprofit organizations across the US, in Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia and Brazil. Her expertise is in economic development at the state and local level, where she brings analytical skills to bear on the ways that industries and occupations shape possibilities for creating good work. Markusen is currently serving as research and writing consultant for the Minnesota House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Living Wage Jobs.
Markusen’s research and policy work has also been directly toward pressing economic development issues at national and local scales, including business tax incentives (Reining in the Competition for Capital, 2007), minimum wage legislation, military industrial conversion (Arming the Future: a Defense Industry for the 20th Century, 1999; Dismantling the Cold War Economy, 1992; The Rise of the Gunbelt, 1991) high tech job growth (High Tech America 1985), energy boomtowns, and state/local public finance. Over the years, her op eds have been published in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor and many regional dallies, and she has been a frequent radio and television commentator.

6th Annual West Park Arts Fest Press Release
The 6th Annual West Park Arts Festival will take place on June 8, 2013 in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia from 11AM to 5PM. The free festival celebrates the multicultural richness of art and culture in the city through performances and activities hosted by over 30 arts, cultural, science, and community organizations. Last year's festival attracted 1,500 people and this year's event is estimated to draw 2,000. Scheduled activities include a youth chess tournament, children's pavilion with arts and crafts, and performances by student and professional musicians on an independent artist stage. The festival is organized by the West Park Cultural Center to promote the arts and support the surrounding communities.

Anne Markusen - How Do We Know Creative Placemaking is Working?
Ann Markusen is Director of the Arts Economy Initiative and the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and Principal of Markusen Economic Research. She is a researcher, frequent public speaker, and advisor to public agencies, policymakers, businesses, economic developers, and nonprofit organizations across the US, in Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia and Brazil. Her expertise is in economic development at the state and local level, where she brings analytical skills to bear on the ways that industries and occupations shape possibilities for creating good work. Markusen is currently serving as research and writing consultant for the Minnesota House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Living Wage Jobs.
Markusen’s research and policy work has also been directly toward pressing economic development issues at national and local scales, including business tax incentives (Reining in the Competition for Capital, 2007), minimum wage legislation, military industrial conversion (Arming the Future: a Defense Industry for the 20th Century, 1999; Dismantling the Cold War Economy, 1992; The Rise of the Gunbelt, 1991) high tech job growth (High Tech America 1985), energy boomtowns, and state/local public finance. Over the years, her op eds have been published in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor and many regional dallies, and she has been a frequent radio and television commentator.
Case Study: Collective Action in Lansing, Michigan
The Lansing School District eliminated all elementary art and music teacher positions due to budget cuts. This prompted the Arts Council of Greater Lansing to lead a coalition of arts organizations to advocate for restoring arts education. Their efforts included crafting a message about the benefits of arts education, gaining media coverage, and working with the school district on small interim steps while pursuing longer term goals like a state arts education mandate. Progress includes community arts partnerships and incorporating arts into regular lessons for now.
Art for Social Change
The document discusses how art can be used as a tool for social change and highlights several arts-based social justice programs. It introduces The Memory Project, started by Ben Shumacher to provide portraits of children facing challenges. Since 2004 they have created over 130,000 portraits for children in 47 countries. The panel included representatives from the Fleet Science Center, Museum of Photographic Arts, and Boys & Girls Club of South County. They shared examples of how their collaborative projects explored relationships between their fields, like examining math concepts in photography. The projects provided learning experiences for both museum visitors and staff. The panel encouraged participants to make their own cross-disciplinary connections and collaborations.

Community voices and values: Reflecting community perspectives in definitions of program success
Rebecca M. Teasdale presented on how to better incorporate community voices and values into definitions of program success in evaluation. She analyzed evaluation reports and found that while effectiveness was the most common criteria of success, experience, quality, relevance and equity were also used. Criteria were typically drawn from the project, evaluation or literature, but incorporating community and partner perspectives could provide a more nuanced understanding of success. The presentation concluded by emphasizing the importance of consulting communities to identify what is important to them and exploring how projects can be relevant, equitable and have consequences for the community.

Beyond Land Acknowledgements: Real Collaboration with Tribes & Tribal Leaders
Tribal land acknowledgments are rapidly growing in popularity among institutions and organizations, taking the form of opening statements in meetings and conferences, signage, or website messages. One might ask why land acknowledgments are being made in a growing number of settings, including the museum. Acknowledgment is a simple, powerful way of showing respect and is intended as a step toward correcting the practices that erase or freeze Indigenous people’s history and culture while inviting and honoring the truth. However, the land acknowledgment is also at risk of ending where it began, perhaps well-conceived and received, but merely a symbolic gesture with little to no follow-through of engagement and real change. While land acknowledgements are well-meaning, they are no substitute for substantive and ongoing tribal relationships and understandings of tribal land claims.

While many nonprofits focus on immediate funding needs, museums are in a unique position, responsible for long-term institutional preservation and collections care. It is not only prudent but necessary to develop sustainable revenue.

This luncheon was open to Directors, Deputy Directors, CEOs, CFOs, Leadership Team Members, and Trustees, and featured guest speaker David Pettyjohn, Executive Director of the Idaho Humanities Council. David Pettyjohn discussed the Council’s mission of “deepening the understanding of human experience by connecting people with ideas,” and provided information on programming and funding opportunities, including Museum on Main Street, Speakers Bureau, and grants.

The collective response of our society to climate change will be one of the defining issues of this era. Property appraisals completed in May for downtown Reno’s Community Assistance and Triage Centers (CAC) reveal that repairing the buildings to bring them back into service would cost an estimated $10.1 million—nearly four times the amount previously reported by city staff.
Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
