The Biodiversity Heritage Library: an Open Global Resource of Literature for ...William Ulate
As part of the scientific method and peer review followed by scientists and particularly taxonomists, it is essential to be able to access the specimens and original publications used to describe a new species and published in books and journals for more than three centuries ago.
The Global BHL (Biodiversity Heritage Library) is a cooperative network of autonomous organizations and institutions that operate programs and projects to support the goal of making biodiversity literature available to all through open access. Currently, the European Commission, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Museum Victoria as part of the Atlas of Living Australia, SciELO Brazil, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt have all created regional BHL nodes. These projects are working together to share content, protocols, services, and digital preservation practices to support research, policy and conservation through appropriate repatriation of scientific information.
In recent years, several biodiversity informatics initiatives have been promoted in Africa by different donors. One of them, the JRS Foundation, supported in November 2011, that ten African librarians, biologists, computer scientists, publishers and students were brought together in Chicago, USA during the Life and Literature Conference, to decide on African needs and objectives related to Biodiversity Literature Digitization.
A follow-up organizational meeting will take place in June 2012, to collaborate on the development of a BHL node for Africa, an open global resource of literature for African biodiversity scientists. Among the topics to be covered are the sharing of previous experiences organizing a BHL Node following on the successful model developed in Australia and Brazil, the appropriate metadata delivery infrastructure, how to coordinate the scanning and synchronize the repositories of titles that are important for biodiversity scientists in Africa, including gray literature and publications produced within the continent.

This document discusses services for multicultural clients at public libraries. It finds:
1. Library staff agree that poor English skills and computer literacy are barriers for multicultural clients. Employing multilingual staff and providing English classes could help address this.
2. The majority of staff feel that incorporating community activities at the library would increase use by multicultural clients.
3. Responses from library staff provided limited insight into meeting the information needs of multicultural clients. Developing a community profile was seen as mixed in providing services.
This document discusses the growth of ebooks and the future of books in a digital format. Some key points include:
- There are over 10 million ebook titles currently available in the United States from various sources.
- Ebooks are significantly cheaper than their physical print counterparts, with ebooks costing around $6.66 on average compared to $100-180 for hardcover books.
- Ebooks offer advantages over print such as availability in multiple formats, integration of rich media, social connectivity features, and quicker publication timelines.
- The future of books is pointed towards more interactive digital formats that incorporate gamification and pricing models that are fair to both consumers and publishers.

The Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG), also known as the Taxonomic Databases Working Group, is a non-profit scientific and educational association that is affiliated with the International Union of Biological Sciences. TDWG was formed to establish international collaboration among biological database projects and related services. Promoting the wider and more effective dissemination of information about the World's heritage of biological organisms for the benefit of the world at large, TDWG focuses on the development of standards for the exchange of biological/biodiversity data. TDWG promotes the use of standards through the most appropriate and effective means and acts as a forum for discussion through holding meetings and through publications, especially the recently launched open access journal, Biodiversity Information Standards and Science. This presentation will focus on areas of possible collaboration by the larger networked information community around bioinformatic standards, areas where TDWG collaborates with other biodiversity organizations such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
