Digital libraries store collections in digital formats rather than physical, allowing access from computers locally or remotely. While some see digital libraries as the future, others prefer traditional libraries. Digitization allows widespread access to reduce costs while preserving rare materials, but changing study habits have led to declining library usage as students access information electronically elsewhere.
The document contains responses from UNA students wishing they had known more about the various services offered by the Collier Library, including private study rooms, research consultations, online databases, interlibrary loans, and the assistance of research librarians. Many students felt overwhelmed by the library as freshmen or did not learn about its full resources until later in their academic careers. The library offers a variety of services to help students with research and studying.
“I Can Do It All By Myself”: Exploring new roles for libraries and mediating ...Patrick "Tod" Colegrove
Co-presented June 23, 2012, with Bohyun Kim (Florida International University) and Jason Clark (Montana State University) at ALA Annual 2012. Primary upload at http://www.slideshare.net/bohyunkim/i-can-do-it-all-by-mysef-exploring-new-roles-for-libraries-and-mediating-technologies-in-addressing-the-diy-mindset-of-library-patrons
Abstract:
Users are increasingly self-reliant in their information seeking behavior. Where is the place for the personal interaction with librarians in this new paradigm? Join an active conversation to explore (a) What the DIY user behaviors are, (b) how libraries can respond to them in terms of new services, fiscal and personnel resources, and technologies, and (c) how to leverage technology to create online or face-to-face mediation opportunities that would be welcomed by users.

The Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG), also known as the Taxonomic Databases Working Group, is a non-profit scientific and educational association that is affiliated with the International Union of Biological Sciences. TDWG was formed to establish international collaboration among biological database projects and related services. Promoting the wider and more effective dissemination of information about the World's heritage of biological organisms for the benefit of the world at large, TDWG focuses on the development of standards for the exchange of biological/biodiversity data. TDWG promotes the use of standards through the most appropriate and effective means and acts as a forum for discussion through holding meetings and through publications, especially the recently launched open access journal, Biodiversity Information Standards and Science. This presentation will focus on areas of possible collaboration by the larger networked information community around bioinformatic standards, areas where TDWG collaborates with other biodiversity organizations such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

In response to the urgency and scale required to effectively address climate change, open source solutions offer significant potential for driving innovation and progress. Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.

Essentials of Automations: Exploring Attributes & Automation ParametersSafe Software
Building automations in FME Flow can save time, money, and help businesses scale by eliminating data silos and providing data to stakeholders in real-time. One essential component to orchestrating complex automations is the use of attributes & automation parameters (both formerly known as “keys”). In fact, it’s unlikely you’ll ever build an Automation without using these components, but what exactly are they?
Attributes & automation parameters enable the automation author to pass data values from one automation component to the next. During this webinar, our FME Flow Specialists will cover leveraging the three types of these output attributes & parameters in FME Flow: Event, Custom, and Automation. As a bonus, they’ll also be making use of the Split-Merge Block functionality.
You’ll leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to maximize the potential of automations by making use of attributes & automation parameters, with the ultimate goal of setting your enterprise integration workflows up on autopilot.

This practical demonstration serves to highlight the potential consequences of unaddressed vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of offensive security practices in safeguarding critical infrastructure.
High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024Vadym Kazulkin
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.
