Al Qaeda Al Qaeda The US government issued an indictment in November 1998 alleging that Osama bin Laden heads an international terrorist network called “Al Qaeda,” an Arabic word meaning “the base.” In approximately 1989, bin Laden and co-defendant Muhammad Atef founded “Al Qaeda,” “ international terrorist group which was dedicated to opposing non-Islamic governments with force and violence.” One of the principal goals of Al Qaeda was to drive the United States armed forces out of Saudi Arabia and Somalia by violence.” Al Qaeda had a command and control structure which included a majlis al shura council which discussed and approved major undertakings, including terrorist operations.” Both Atef and bin Laden sat on this council. In the mid 1980s, the group was seen as the world’s most dangerous terrorist organization. But some experts say the group is inactive and no longer poses much of a threat; Abu Nidal was said to be ailing in recent years and in August 2002 was reported dead. 10. Al-Gama al Islamiyya Al-Gama al-Islamiyya is a militant Egyptian Islamist movement that is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union and Egyptian governments. The group is dedicated to the overthrow of the Egyptian government and replacing it with an Islamic state. The blind cleric Omar Abdel-Rahman is the spiritual leader of the movement. He was accused of conspiring to bomb the World Trade Center in 1993 but was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for his espousal of a subsequent conspiracy to bomb New York landmarks, including the United Nations and FBI offices. The Islamic Group has publicly threatened to retaliate against the United States unless Rahman is released from prison. Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya began as an umbrella organization for militant student groups, formed, like the Islamic Jihad, after the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood renounced violence in the 1970s. In its early days, the group was primarily active on university campuses, and was mainly composed of university students. In addition, Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya recruited some inmates of Egyptian jails. Its membership has since become poorer, younger, and less well educated; its main base of recruiting and support has moved away from universities to poor neighborhoods of cities, and to rural areas.

Hezbollah HEZBOLLAH is an Islamic movement founded after the Israeli military seizure of Lebanon in 1982, which resulted in the formation of Islamic resistance units committed to the liberation of the occupied territories and the ejection of Israeli forces. Between the spring of 1983 to the summer of 1985 the Hezbollah launched an unprecedented wave of suicide bombings which included an attack on the US embassy and at a US Marine base in Beirut. Known or suspected to have been involved in numerous anti-US terrorist attacks, including the suicide truck bombing of the US Embassy and US Marine barracks in Beirut in October 1983 and the US Embassy Annex in Beirut in September 1984. Elements of the group were responsible for the kidnapping and detention of US and other Western hostages in Lebanon. The group also attacked the Israeli Embassy in Argentina in 1992.

13. LTTE Tamil rebels began an armed uprising in 1983, after they complained of discrimination against the minority Tamil community. The rebels say they want wide-ranging autonomy for Tamil-dominated areas under their control in the north and the east. The LTTE has integrated a battlefield insurgent strategy with a terrorist program that targets key government and military personnel, the economy, and public infrastructure. Political assassinations include the suicide bomber attacks against Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1993 and Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, which is the group’s only known act outside Sri Lanka. The LTTE has detonated two massive truck bombs directed against the Sri Lankan economy, one at the Central Bank in January 1996 and another at the Colombo World Trade Center in October 1997. The LTTE also has attacked several ships in Sri Lankan waters, including foreign commercial vessels and infrastructure targets such as commuter trains, buses, oil tanks, and power stations.

Naxalites The Naxalites, also sometimes called the Naxals, is a loose term used to define groups waging a violent struggle on behalf of landless labourers and tribal people against landlords and others. Led by PRABHAKARAN ,The Naxalites say they are fighting oppression and exploitation to create a classless society. Their opponents say the Naxalites are terrorists oppressing people in the name of a class war. The insurgency is fueled by the exploitation of the peasants and poor tribals by the landlords and the timber mafia, as well as neglect and corruption by governmental offices. The lack of socio-economic developments that have occurred in these regions from any governmental force is an issue that the Naxalites frequently exploit in their calls for violent, Mao inspired, revolution. Many groups operate under different names. The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) is the political outfit that propagates the Naxalite ideology. The most prominent area of operation is a broad swathe across the very heartland of India, often considered the least developed area of this country. The Naxalites operate mostly in the rural and Adivasi areas, often out of the continuous jungles in these regions. Their operations are most prominent in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, eastern Maharashtra, the Telengana region of Andhra Pradesh, and western Orissa. It will be seen that these areas are all inland, from the coastline.

The two main groups involved in violent activities, besides many factions and smaller outfits, are the People's War, the group many believe is responsible for the attempt on Naidu, and the Maoist Communist Centre. The term comes from Naxalbari , a small village in West Bengal , where a leftist section of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) led by Charu Majumdar and Kanu Sanyal led a militant peasant uprising in 1967 , trying to develop a "revolutionary opposition" in order to establish "revolutionary rule" in India. Several movies relating to the Naxal movement have been made, such as Lal Salaam , Jukti Takko Gappo , Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi and Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa .

20. The bombs were placed on trains plying on the western line of the suburban ("local") train network, which forms the backbone of the city's transport network. The first blast reportedly took place at 18:24 IST (12:54 UTC ), and the explosions continued for approximately eleven minutes, until 18:35, during the after-work rush hour. All the bombs had been placed in the first-class "general" compartments (some compartments are reserved for women, called "ladies" compartments) of several trains running from Churchgate , the city-centre end of the western railway line, to the western suburbs of the city. MADRID BOMBINGS The 2004 Madrid train bombings (also known as 3/11) were a series of coordinated bombings against the commuter train system of Madrid, Spain on the morning of 11 March 2004, which killed 191 people and wounded over 1700. On the morning of Thursday 11th March 2004 , ten explosions occurred at the height of the Madrid rush hour aboard four commuter trains . All the affected trains were travelling on the same line and in the same direction between Alcalá de Henares and Atocha station in Madrid. A total of thirteen improvised explosive devices were reported to have been placed on the trains, two of the three devices which did not explode were subsequently destroyed in controlled explosions by the bomb disposal teams. According to the summary of the judicial investigation the explosions took place between 07:37 and 07:40 in the morning . Thirteen improvised explosive devices were reported to have been used by the Islamic militant group that was responsible for the bombing, all but three of which detonated. This group seems to have worked with a very tenuous connection with Al-Qaeda but with the aim of acting on its behalf. Shortly after the bombings, the group was completely dismantled by the Spanish police and the core members committed suicide when they were surrounded in the nearby city of Leganés.

25. The bombings in Madrid have led to a sharp political and social fracture in Spain. This result stands in sharp contrast to other large scale terrorist attacks such as those of New York and London, which galvanized society and political forces.

26. London blasts The 7 July 2005 London bombings were a series of coordinated bomb blasts that struck London's public transport system during the morning rush hour. At 8:50 a.m three bombs exploded within 50 seconds of each other on three London Underground trains. A fourth bomb exploded on a bus nearly an hour later at 9:47 a.m. in Tavistock Square . The explosion ripped the roof off the top deck of the vehicle and destroyed the back of the bus. Witnesses reported seeing "half a bus flying through the air ". The bombings killed 52 commuters and the four suicide bombers, as well as causing a severe, day-long disruption of the city's transport and mobile telecommunications infrastructure. It was originally thought that there had been six, rather than three, explosions on the Underground. The bus bombing brought the reported total to seven, however this error was corrected later that day. This was because the blasts occurred on trains that were between stations, causing the wounded to emerge from both stations, giving the impression that there was an incident at each station.
