Islamic State is a radical Islamist group that seized territory in northern Syria and Iraq in 2014. They have brutal tactics like mass killings and abductions of religious and ethnic minorities. Originally founded in 2004, ISIS declared the creation of a caliphate in 2014 and changed its name to the Islamic State. They are based on a radical Sunni ideology and want to be governed by a single caliph, currently Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Isis
What is ISIS?
It was first formed as Al Qaeda in 2003 when the U.S. invaded Iraq.
ISIS ( the Islamic state in Iraq and Syria) is one of the most successful military group, by taking control of parts of Iraq and Syria, for many years it has governed over this territory and has even declared itself a state.
The group started in 2004 as the well known Al Qaeda then two years later broke away and named itself ISIS, although they are still an ally of Al Qaeda.
ISIS is one of the most effective and brutal radical anti-western groups.
2
How did ISIS become so powerful?
disenfranchisement: Communities within Syria and Iraq were feeling alienated by Shite- and Alawite- led governments. Using this to their advantage ISIS encouraged the feeling of disenchantment which lead to these communities feeling empowered through violence.
Racketeering and extortion: Before ISIS legitimately controlled Mosul, it ran a racketeering business (very similar to what the mafia does in the U.S.). People and businesses had to pay a fee so that ISIS would keep them safe.
Taxation: Just as any government would ISIS uses the countries it controls to earn a profit.
Oil: Within many of the territories it controls oil fields are abundant. Since they are not allowed to sell in the international markets, they took to the black markets to earn income.
ISIS’s goal
They are aimed at creating an Islamic state (caliphate) across the territories of Iraq and Syria.
What is a Caliphate? It’s an Islamic state that has a strict enforcement of the Sharia Law. The areas under this rule would then be ruled by a caliph which is Baghdadi. Those under the rule would have to follow the Sharia Law which is based on Islam teachings of the Quran.
Who is targeted?
They are targeting the Islamic states mostly but have went after other religions as well. They have beheaded those they have taken, tortured, and stoned them.
Women are another target. They have very often captured and raped women. Then took them and sold them as slaves.
Just within the beginning of 2014 more than 10,000 lives were taken by the group.
They are also the first terroristic group to take pride in their doings on social media, by making videos.
Some of the major crimes of ISIS
They burn pilots in cages: Early in January ISIS had captured a Jordanian pilot and locked him in a cage. Then they proceeded to pour a inflammable liquid over him and lighting him on fire and videoed it for the world to see.
They execute their own soldiers: between the months of June 2014 and December 2014 ISIS killed around 200 of its members. They had become uncertain when it came to if they wanted to join the group or not and had attempted to return home. They have also killed those who they thought would be “ineffective” in battle.
They use child soldiers: By either recruitment or kidnapping ISIS uses child soldiers as a means to spy, human shields, and to donate their blood for their injured soldiers. The.

Introduction Why We Disagree about International Relations
In April, 2015, ISIS militants pose with their banner in a suburb of Damascus, Syria, that they had just partially captured. What has caused the rise of ISIS, and what can be done to counter it?
Photo by Balkis Press/Sipa USA (Sipa via AP Images)
In spring 2014, an Islamic army known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swarmed across northern Syria and Iraq conquering territory larger than Belgium, including Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul. Also known as the Islamic State (IS), Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and Daesh, its Arab label, ISIS declared itself a Caliphate, resurrecting the ancient empire of Islam, and proceeded to threaten Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Thousands of jihadists (religious revolutionaries) joined ISIS, some from the United States; and scattered extremist groups from North Africa to Southeast Asia pledged allegiance to ISIS and adopted its black flag. The Caliphate, under its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, imposed a brutal Sunni Muslim law in the conquered territories, and hooded warriors beheaded Western journalists, local Christians and Shiite (non-Sunni) Muslims, captured in terrifying videos that went viral on the Internet. Ben Rhodes, the Deputy National Security Adviser to President Obama, identified the threat to the United States: “They are seeking to establish themselves as the vanguard terrorist organization that is at war with the U.S. and the West on behalf of Islam.”1
What causes a conflict of this sort? And what can be done about it? As students of international relations, we start with the facts, but we have to be careful. There are so many facts, and we can’t know them all or know for certain which ones may be the most important ones that cause other things to happen. Let’s look at what appear to be the salient facts in the case of ISIS and then make a first stab at how we sort out the facts and causes of international events to understand them better.
Syria and Iraq are centrally located in the geographically strategic region of the Middle East. They are Muslim countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkey. Both Eastern and Western empires have occupied this region. Christian crusaders invaded in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and the region was part of the Ottoman Empire for several centuries. The first Muslim Caliphate dated from the thirteenth century. After World War I and the collapse of the Caliphate, Syria became a colonial territory under French administration, while Iraq became a British colony. Both became independent nations after World War II. After World War II, oil became a major resource in the Middle East. Western companies monopolized oil production and remain today major economic players in the region even though the oil-producing states now control their own oil and influence global oil markets through the Organization of Petroleum .

Jihadist Networks
Jihadi Salafism:
Jihadi Salafism (also referred to as Salafi Jihadism, Salafism, Salafists, or Salafis), a medieval interpretation of Islam that developed when Arabs were being threatened by Europeans. Jihadi Salafism represents a minority and frequently internally condemned interpretation of Islam, but it is a distinct theological strain of Sunni Islam supported by a global network of scholars, websites, media outlets, and social networks. Bunzel says it is deeply rooted in a theology of militancy. The Muslim Brotherhood champions one school. It formed in Egypt to oppose European imperial rule, to purify religion through education and social service, and to seek the restoration of the caliphate at some distant point in history. A more violent school, represented by ISIS and al Qaeda, seeks to purify Islam and rid Muslim lands of Western influence. ISIS embraces a more extreme intolerant version of Salafism seeking to purge the religion of what it believes are un-Islamic practices, eradicating Shi’ites, and waging offensive wars. Salafis see themselves as the only “true” Muslims, and they have assumed the authority to denounce fellow Muslims “heretics” if they disagree with Jihadi Salafi theology. William McCants (2014a) adds that Jihadi Salafism includes an apocalyptic interpretation of Islam that believes Salafis are called to usher in the final days of creation.
Muslim Brotherhood:
An organization founded by Hassan al Banna in 1928 to recapture the spirit and religious purity of the period of Mohammed and the four Rightly Guided caliphs. The Brotherhood seeks to create a single Muslim nation through education and religious reform. A militant wing founded by Sayyid Qutb sought the same objective through violence. Hamas, a group that defines itself as the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, has rejected the multinational approach in favor of creating a Muslim Palestine.
Al Qaeda:
Al Qaeda from Inception to 9/11 Al Qaeda’s origins can be traced to the Cold War. From 1945 until 1991, the United States and former Soviet Union fought one another with surrogates to avoid a direct superpower nuclear confrontation. Islamic radicals hated Communists for their atheism, and thi.
Life under Isis The everyday reality of living in the Islamic.docxsmile790243
Life under Isis: The everyday reality of living in the Islamic 'Caliphate' with its 7th Century
laws, very modern methods and merciless violence, by Patrick Cockburn
It is one of the strangest states ever created. The Islamic State wants to force all humanity to believe
in its vision of a religious and social utopia existing in the first days of Islam. Women are to be
treated as chattels, forbidden to leave the house unless they are accompanied by a male relative.
People deemed to be pagans, like the Yazidis, can be bought and sold as slaves. Punishments such as
beheadings, amputations and flogging become the norm. All those not pledging allegiance to the
caliphate declared by its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, on 29 June last year are considered enemies.
The rest of the world has watched with fascinated horror over the past eight months as Isis, which
calls itself Islamic State, imposed its rule over a vast area in northern Iraq and eastern Syria
inhabited by six million people. Highly publicised atrocities or acts of destruction, such as burning
to death a Jordanian pilot, decapitating prisoners and destroying the remains of ancient cities, are
deliberately staged as demonstrations of strength and acts of defiance. For a movement whose
tenets are supposedly drawn from the religious norms of the 7th century CE, Isis has a very modern
and manipulative approach to dominating the news agenda by means of attention-grabbing PR
stunts in which merciless violence plays a central role.
These are not the acts of a weird but beleaguered cult, but of a powerful state and war machine. In
swift succession last year, its fighters inflicted defeats on the Iraqi army, the Iraqi Kurdish
Peshmerga, the Syrian army and Syrian rebels. They staged a 134-day siege of the Syrian-Kurdish
city of Kobani and withstood 700 US air strikes targeting the small urban area where they were
concentrated before finally being forced to pull back. The caliphate’s opponents deny it is a real
state, but it is surprisingly well organised, capable of raising taxes, imposing conscription and even
controlling rents.
Isis may be regarded with appalled fascination by most people, but conditions inside its territory
remain a frightening mystery to the outside world. This is scarcely surprising, because it imprisons
and frequently murders local and foreign journalists who report on its activities. Despite these
difficulties, The Independent has tried to build up a complete picture of what life is like inside the
Islamic State by interviewing people who have recently lived in Sunni Arab cities like Mosul and
Fallujah that are held – or, in the case of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, 80% held – by Isis.
Christians, Yazidis, Shabak and Shia, persecuted by Isis as heretics or idolaters, fled or were killed
last year, so almost all of those interviewed are Sunni Arabs living in Iraq, with the exception of
some Kurds still ...
this was made by me before 3 years so it is not based on the latest updates...will make those updates and post it very sonn.....yet this is one of the greatest presentations on terrorism!

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
