3. The Race to
Develop the
World’s First
BIM System
Three software developers – Autodesk,
Graphisoft, and Bentley Systems –
began developing systems facilitating
the interoperable exchange of digital
information.(1)
Graphisoft called its platform ‘Virtual
Building’. Bentley Systems named its
platform ‘Integrated Project Models’.
Autodesk was the first company to
describe its platform as ‘Building
Information Modelling’.
This pioneering system integrated a range
of applications, including Sonata, Reflex
and RUCAPS.
After developing the groundbreaking
ArchiCAD application, Graphisoft
snatched pole position with the most
sophisticated solutions on the market.
ArchiCAD is commonly accepted as the
first true BIM system. It was the first CAD
product that planners could install on
their personal computer to create plans in
both 2D and 3D.
Today, BIM systems cover 7 dimensions
of design, factoring in elements such as
time and cost, building sustainability,
environmental analysis, and life-cycle
facility management.
