They boost the activity of serotonin and norepinephrine, brain chemicals believed to influence circuits responsible for mood regulation.
Other classes of medicines that can be helpful with milder cases of anxiety are antihistamines and beta-blockers. The first commonly treat allergic reactions by reducing or blocking histamines, chemicals that human bodies produce when in contact with allergy triggers. The latter is typically used for treating high blood pressure as they block certain natural substances that impact the work of the heart and the blood vessels.
For immediate relief, in cases of acute anxiety or a panic attack, psychiatrists recommend benzodiazepines, a class of medications that influences a person’s brain and nerves to create a calming effect. It is noteworthy to mention that due to the potential habit-forming nature of some anxiety drugs, psychiatrists usually prescribe them for shorter courses of treatment or only as needed.
Medications and Psychotherapies Used to Treat Panic Disorder
With over 15 years of experience in psychiatry, Dr. Sridhar Yaratha works at Gateway Homes as a psychiatrist. Panic attacks can be treated with either psychotherapy, medication, or in combination.
Medications used to treat panic disorder consist mainly of antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as citalopram (Celexa) or fluoxetine (Prozac), have been shown to decrease anxiety and reduce the frequency and intensity of panic attacks when taken daily. Anti-anxiety or tranquilizing drugs known as benzodiazepines, on the other hand, are used for their fast-acting effects and can be taken during a panic attack for quick relief.
Psychotherapy is used either by itself or in conjunction with medication. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown to be effective against panic disorder by aiding the patient in developing coping skills that change unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors. Panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP) is also effective against panic disorder. Its goal is to uncover emotional conflicts and experience from a patient’s past that may have influenced the development of the anxiety disorder.
Three Types of Medications for Treatment of Anxiety Disorder

Antidepressants
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, are particularly useful in treating and preventing anxiety disorders. Some SSRIs that are widely used are citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft). Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors may also be prescribed.
Antihistamines and beta-blockers
These types of medications are often used for mild anxiety and performance anxiety, which is classified as a type of social anxiety disorder. These drugs are taken on an as-needed basis, compared to SSRIs and SNRIs, which are taken daily.
Benzodiazepines
This class of drugs is used for acute anxiety, also known as panic attacks. It includes alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), and lorazepam (Ativan). These drugs can cause side effects such as drowsiness and physical dependence, but are much safer than barbiturates, a class of drugs that used to be prescribed for similar problems.
