The Aztecs were originally nomadic peoples who spoke Nahuatl and settled in the Valley of Mexico around Lake Texcoco, where they established the city of Tenochtitlan. They formed the Triple Alliance with two other city-states and began expanding their empire through a strong warrior class that conquered neighboring lands, taking tribute. In 1521, the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez allied with rivals of the Aztecs and conquered Tenochtitlan, ending the Aztec Empire. Many Aztec cultural traditions and celebrations continue in modern Mexico.
