France established its North American colonies starting in 1605 with the founding of Port Royal in Acadia, now Nova Scotia. In 1663, the Sovereign Counsel passed, creating a loose alliance between Natives and French across North America. However, British colonization efforts caused France to lose its territories, and after World War 2 and France's financial collapse, national liberation movements prevented France from reestablishing control over lost colonies.
