Semi-structured interviews of 30-60 minutes will be conducted with 20 homeless participants and 2 healthcare providers. The goal is to learn more about how the homeless access medical care, cope with daily stressors, and can be better supported through improved interventions. Findings may inform the development of mobile healthcare units to more conveniently treat health issues and reduce costs for the homeless community.

As noted in the Learning Resources this week, health professionals can be leaders of social change. Consider the story of Paul Amigh, a student and teaching assistant at Walden:
My name is Paul Amigh (pronounced Ah-me'), and I am a student in the PhD Public Health program at Walden University with a concentration in Epidemiology and a Teaching Assistant for the School of Health Sciences bachelor’s degree programs. I have obtained my entire college experience from Walden University, and it has changed my life and given me the desire to change the lives of others.
I am a U.S. Army veteran who graduated from the Academy of Health Sciences, attended vocational school in Central PA for my L.P.N. license, and hold a BS in Public Health with a concentration in Health Informatics from Walden University. I have spent my life in service of my country and others working as medic, a prison nurse, travel nurse, and as a charge nurse in an advanced Alzheimer’s unit. Feeling a greater need to do more for my community and improve the lives of others, it was my bachelor’s degree from Walden University that gave me the opportunity to work in education. I began teaching medical assisting, medical billing and coding, and health informatics classes at a local technical school in Central Pennsylvania, but I still felt I could do more.
I created a local chapter of SkillsUSA and began to train students in leadership and skills competitions related to their chosen vocational career path. It was here I discovered students just need someone to believe in them. Spending a few hours each day training and working with these students to improve upon the soft skills employers are looking for in communication, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and fundraising the entire cost of membership and travel, I created Champions at Work. Over the last six years, I have personally trained and mentored more than 50 Pennsylvania State Gold Medalists and trained fifteen National Medalists, with five of them becoming national champions!
This October I stepped down from teaching and have been appointed as the new Public Health Program Administrator of Western Pennsylvania for the PA Department of Health’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. This special Supplemental Nutrition Program provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, healthcare referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. Established as a permanent program in 1974, WIC is considered the premiere public health program for the Department of Agriculture.
My dream is to not only complete my PhD from Walden University, but to someday call Walden University my employer and continue to work with some of the most amazing professors and mentors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from, getting to know them on a personal level, and changing the live.

As noted in the Learning Resources this week, health professionals can be leaders of social change. Consider the story of Paul Amigh, a student and teaching assistant at Walden:
My name is Paul Amigh (pronounced Ah-me'), and I am a student in the PhD Public Health program at Walden University with a concentration in Epidemiology and a Teaching Assistant for the School of Health Sciences bachelor’s degree programs. I have obtained my entire college experience from Walden University, and it has changed my life and given me the desire to change the lives of others.
I am a U.S. Army veteran who graduated from the Academy of Health Sciences, attended vocational school in Central PA for my L.P.N. license, and hold a BS in Public Health with a concentration in Health Informatics from Walden University. I have spent my life in service of my country and others working as medic, a prison nurse, travel nurse, and as a charge nurse in an advanced Alzheimer’s unit. Feeling a greater need to do more for my community and improve the lives of others, it was my bachelor’s degree from Walden University that gave me the opportunity to work in education. I began teaching medical assisting, medical billing and coding, and health informatics classes at a local technical school in Central Pennsylvania, but I still felt I could do more.
I created a local chapter of SkillsUSA and began to train students in leadership and skills competitions related to their chosen vocational career path. It was here I discovered students just need someone to believe in them. Spending a few hours each day training and working with these students to improve upon the soft skills employers are looking for in communication, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and fundraising the entire cost of membership and travel, I created Champions at Work. Over the last six years, I have personally trained and mentored more than 50 Pennsylvania State Gold Medalists and trained fifteen National Medalists, with five of them becoming national champions!
This October I stepped down from teaching and have been appointed as the new Public Health Program Administrator of Western Pennsylvania for the PA Department of Health’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. This special Supplemental Nutrition Program provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, healthcare referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. Established as a permanent program in 1974, WIC is considered the premiere public health program for the Department of Agriculture.
My dream is to not only complete my PhD from Walden University, but to someday call Walden University my employer and continue to work with some of the most amazing professors and mentors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from, getting to know them on a personal level, and changing the live.

The National Training Initiative awarded grants to 14 University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs), including the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD), to develop diversity fellowship programs. [pause] Don’t worry if you haven’t – many Schweitzer Fellows first learned about Schweitzer in an info session just like this one. So, let’s watch a brief video that will you give you some background on who Schweitzer was – and how his legacy of addressing health disparities powers the work of Schweitzer Fellows across the country.
- As you learned in that video, Dr. Schweitzer founded his hospital in Lambaréné, Africa in 1913. But there are Lambaréné’s to be found and created everywhere.
- And ASF is dedicated to helping emerging professionals find and create them. Our mission is to address health disparities by developing “Leaders in Service,” individuals who are dedicated and skilled in addressing the health needs of underserved populations and whose example influences and inspires others
- The Houston-Galveston Program is one of 13 Schweitzer Fellows Program sites across the US. ASF selects and supports more than 200 new Fellows from the nation’s top health and human service schools annually as they partner with community agencies to develop and implement service projects with a direct — and lasting — impact on the health of underserved communities. As we’ll talk more about later, there are more than 2,400 ASF Alumni in the Schweitzer Fellows for Life network of lifelong “leaders in service.”
- When we talk about the health needs Schweitzer Fellows address, we define health as the World Health Organization (WHO) does -- as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Rooted in this holistic understanding of health, Schweitzer Fellows address not only clinical health issues, but also the social determinants of health—defined by the WHO as the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, and which are mostly responsible for health inequities.
- Before we delve into the details, here’s a brief overview of the four things that differentiate ASF from many other health service opportunities: Instead of simply volunteering to fill a pre-set role, Fellows must partner with community-based organizations to identify an unmet health need, design a sustainable service project with a demonstrable enduring impact on that need, and bring that project from idea to implementation and impact. Many health service opportunities for professional students are options to fill the summer gap. But as a Fellow, working with the underserved is not something you do for two months and then set aside when you return to your “regular life”; by conducting their Schweitzer Project while they’re in school, and for a full year, Fellows must learn to make working with the underserved part of their “regular life .” In order to address health disparities on a large scale, health professionals must be able to work comfortably with leaders in allied fields. By sharing their intensive Fellowship experience with health-oriented students from other fields, Fellows emerge with the skill set necessary to effect large-scale change. And finally, Fellows exit their initial year with that hard-earned blueprint for how to consistently integrate service into their (very busy) lives. They become “Fellows for Life” committed to sticking with that blueprint throughout their careers.
- So let’s talk about what it means to be a Schweitzer Fellow. The core of the program is the service project. 200 hours – primarily direct community service Must address an unmet health need in a local community Fellows collaborate with a community agency in both design and implementation Academic and community mentors [Describe your project. It’s design and implementation._ In addition to the service project, there are number of other core elements of the Fellowship, all designed to strengthen Fellows’ leadership skills and facilitate their development into professionals who are trained and committed to serving the underserved. From orientation to monthly meetings, these staples of the Schweitzer Fellowship Program are structured opportunities for Fellows to connect, share resources and experiences, participate in leadership and skills-development workshop, and tap into the valuable support of their like-minded, service-oriented peers.
