- You’ve already convinced us that you belong in this class and we want to see you succeed. We could stand here and list the typical expectations you’ve all heard before, like doing your assignments, participating in class and discussion groups, and respecting each other and the presenters, but those nitty gritty details are a given. We’re not expecting you to be perfect, but we do expect you to do your best. It’s common sense that you can’t fully participate if you are texting your best friend through a lecture. Make our jobs easy by proving that we made the right choice when we picked you to be an LA. Yes, we’ve set the bar high, but if you’re not living up to your potential, we’ll give you feedback to help get you back on track. It’s easy to be anonymous in large lecture classes but our job is to make sure that no one is invisible in this class. Think of this class more like a grad level class than a GUR. We want to get to know each of you so that we can make sure that we place you in the topic group that is the best fit for you. And down the road, when you need a recommendation for grad school or a reference for a job, we’ll feel confident that we know you well enough to do that. This class is the beginning of your LA experience. Have fun and be engaged! Let us see who you are and what you have to offer the LA program. Welcome!

- We are excited to begin working with you! The application process was highly competitive this year. Look around you—if we had accepted everyone who applied, we would need a room twice this size. Now that you’re here, it’s time to get to work!This class is pass/fail but that doesn’t mean you can just do the bare minimum. In fact, our expectations for you are higher than they would be for a graded course because the work you will be doing as an LA is critical to advancing the health and social justice of Western’s community. What we expect of you in this class is more like a job or an internship than a class; the class is the vehicle for helping us to determine where you will fit in the overall LA program. As paraprofessionals, you will carry more responsibility for delivering quality work because that is how we will make your topic group determination.
- It’s our job to give you the tools to succeed in this class. We’ll provide you with the theoretical and practical foundation for your work as an LA. You will learn how individual and community health intersect. You’ll learn how health is connected to social justice, economic equality, and service. Along the way, you’ll build leadership, teamwork, communication, and advocacy skills.
