The intersection of community engagement, research, and interactive technology is an innovative way for youth to develop leadership and 21st century skills. The California Adolescent Health Collaborative and community health clinic partners, Livingston Community Health and Asian Health Services, developed Project PARTNER, where youth in rural and urban communities learn critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative processes through researching community health issues. \n\nYouth and adult allies from the health clinics were recruited to be members of a cross-generational and cross-regional community advisory board and were trained in research methodology. The online educational technology platform Kahoot!, and the mobile app Kahoot!, were utilized in training members on research fundamentals. The advisory boards then developed community surveys through Google Forms and utilized its mobile app feature to canvas neighborhoods to obtain community data. With data collected, they will develop research questions and participate in collaborative cross-site activities to support their research.

Running Head: MY PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING 1
My Personal Philosophy of Teaching
Introduction
Education is a continuous process that accompanies and goes through the whole life of man, where the role of the teacher is to help the student to do himself. So; education as a frames process is very complex, because it seeks nursing students to be realized as human beings, which implies stimulating their freedom and autonomy while respecting the other; Encouraging him to learn the culture to which they have come, awakening their ability to communicate, respect and internalize the values so that with freedom to reach, participate critically and innovatively in new cultural realizations. Part of my philosophy is to promote in my students the value and individual ability for self-realization through reasoning.
My goal is to develop a critical, whole, and accomplished human being. To achieve my goal, I encourage my students to talk about their experiences and direct situations; since knowledge develops in an affective framework, of values; responds to the needs and interests of the student and therefore learning is developed from the perception of the student, in accordance with their experiences and experiences.
As an educator, I know learning can only be made successful by both instructor and learners. Being an instructor, I will serve my role of making my student get the nursing context in which they can understand the motivation of decisions made by those nursing figures and they can critically evaluate those motivations as well as getting the real essence of actions taken when they synthesize the event themselves. I always want my learners to know that emotionally and intellectually their daily life is as the result of events which were created by normal human being like themselves whom maybe in their mind come across of implications or even foresee result of their actions.
It is always my joy to make my learners understand that what they are currently learning is because of those events that have been developed by others and that have shaped the nursing career, to make sure they can handle consciously this event whenever they leave my classroom. My priority is to draw the picture of conversion between nursing and nursing actors those are being studied by my students. I make sure also dialog arising in the class as the reaction of my teaching is conducted in a mutual respect, tolerance of diversified opinions and safe atmosphere to make sure that any candid dialogs of most uncomfortable topics are discussed. Nursing has evolved over a long time and thus it is my desire that my students understand the various nursing contexts that have been carried on from time to time and which have shaped the nursing culture today.
As an instructor, I use varied methods of teachings to ensure that discussions and interactions are encouraging and do not create monotonous feeling to my learners. One ...

Jails and Prisons
Looking inside total institutions
Definition of total institution
Canadian Erving Goffman coined this term
He wrote, “A total institution may be defined as a place of residence and work where a large number of like-situated individuals cut off from the wider society for an appreciable period of time together lead an enclosed formally administered round of life (Goffman, 1968: 11).
"Total institutions (such as prisons, boarding schools, psychiatric hospitals, concentration camps, etc. ) are distinctive and have much in common" (Goffman, 1968: 15) because, as Goffman points out, they depart from the basic social arrangements in modern western society "that the individual tends to sleep, play and work in different places with different co-participants, under different authorities and without an overall rational plan" (Goffman, 1968: 17).

Finally, hear the story of Mr. Melendez who spent 17 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. Now exonerated, he has visited UTA and spoken about this experience. He paints a vivid picture of those 17 years here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k6C7ZVhaHE
Why is working in prisons important for social workers?
Criminal justice system is marked by the confluence of race, class, gender, and inequality in the United States
Mass incarceration has been called one the most pressing social problems of our time (Mauer & Chesney-Lind, 2002)
The CJ system is fragmented
Over 50,000 different agencies responsible
Prisons account for the fastest growing segment of government employment (nearly 750,000 people in 2004)
Most people are imprisoned for non-violent crimes
Remember that Race, Class, Gender Matter
African American men disproportionately imprisoned
Women account for the fastest growing prison population
African American women: 571% increase in 20 years
Latinas: 131% increase in 20 years
Caucasian women: 75% increase in 20 years
More women are incarcerated per capita for drug crimes than men (about 34% of women and 19% of men)
60% of men and 40% of women unemployed at arrest, 1/3 earned less than 5000$ last year.

Cognitive Abilities Course Project Research Paper Professor Goldston-Blount PSY492 Luciana Smith November 20, 2009 Abstract Every year there are thousands of children diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S. (American Diabetes Association, 2009). Children can be diagnosed at a very young age and after having diabetes for several years, may begin to exhibit signs of depression and anxiety over the fact that they have to deal with this disease for the rest of their lives. The DAISY research (Depression and Anxiety In Specified Youth) will be researching the question “Does depression affect a majority of children with type 1 diabetes as they reach adolescence?” American Diabetes Association (2009). 15. Communication Skills Psychology of Women Course Project: Module 4 Course Code: PSY314 Submitted by: Luciana Smith Date: July 25, 2009 Abstract Managing stress is about a multitude of things which include taking care of yourself and taking charge of your emotions, thoughts, environment and how you handle problems (Helpguide, 2009). Therefore, it is important to understand how women, in particular deal with stressors and their environment and what impact childbearing has on these issues. Many people believe that the natural place for a woman is in the home (Argosy Online, 2009). Trying to steer from this concept and incorporate the idea of women in a full time work environment is not only a guided misperception of men, but also of women. Often times women are torn when returning to the workforce and feel obligated to remain at home raising the children and maintaining the homefront. However, due to the financial constrictions that many families deal with, it is unlikely and unrealistic that all women are able to stay at home after child birth to raise the children. 16. Ethics and Diversity Awareness Disabilities Course Project Course Code: PSY420 Submitted by: Luciana Smith Date: April 11, 2009 Abstract A person’s greatest source of support comes from their friends and family and it is important that Amy and her mother are in agreement, though ultimately it would be Amy’s decision as to whether or not to marry (Argosy Online, 2009). Amy’s mother seems to have her best interests in mind, but is also her mother and can be protective of her daughter. Amy’s mother also sees the day to day struggles and challenges that Amy faces, and can understand the amount of responsibility it takes to run a house and to be married, file taxes, pay the bills. Amy’s mother is correct in trying to influence her decision, simply because she knows the amount of responsibility that being married and living with someone means, not to mention the social challenges that Amy and her husband would face. Argosy Online (2009). Module 6 Lecture. Retrieved online April 9, 2009 from https://myeclassonline.com.
17. Knowledge of Foundations Ethics in Psychology Course Project Course Code: PSY430 Submitted by: Luciana Smith Date: April 23, 2009 Abstract The APA Ethical Codes are similar to the ACA in that they specifically state that psychologists are allowed to provide services only in the areas in which they have been trained and are within the boundaries of their competence, based on education, training, supervision and professional experience (APA 2.01, 2002). It is important to note that both guidelines specifically mention that the counselors need to not only have training in these fields but also supervised training and experience. APA Code of Ethics. (2003). Retrieved online March 27, 2009 from http://www.apa.org/ethics/code2002.html.
18. Knowledge of Applied Psychology With healthcare and chronic illnesses also comes the need for education within the scope of treatment. It is important to teach families how to get access to the medications that they require and to provide tools for them to obtain necessary information and supplies in order to help better manager their or their child’s diabetes. Through educational programs and medication programs specific to diabetes we can teach patients how to better manage their risk for complications such as cardiovascular disease and diabetic retinopathy. We need to look beyond the direct need of healthcare and look deeper into the scope of providing tools and resources.
