Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. REVOLUTION
• The revolutions that occurred in the late 18th
century introduced ideas of equality, freedom &
democracy to the western world.
• The American revolution was one of the earliest
revolutions which took place in the modern
world.
• Further the French revolution was the result of
social, religious & economic injustices that
ended the monarchy.
4. THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE
• Here thirteen British colonies of North America
rejected the governance of the parliament of great
Britain and the British monarchy to become the
united states of America.
• The American revolution was successful due to
the Struggle by the colonies, Intolerable Acts ,
continental congress, start of military hostilities
and treaty of Paris which was signed between the
British government & the colonists.
5. RESULT OF AMERICAN REVOLUTION
• The American war of independence became a
source of inspiration for other British colonies.
• The British colonies realized that they too could
form a democratically elected government.
• In 1789, George Washington was unanimously
elected as the first president of the united states
of America.
6. THE FRENCH REVOLUTION
• The French revolution was started in the year
1789. It created both a new political & social
order in France.
• It is considered as the major turning point in
European political and social history.
7. FRENCH SOCIETY BEFORE THE REVOLUTION
• Before the revolution, the French society was arranged in order of rank and
was divided into three main classes called Estates.
8. CAUSES FOR FRENCH REVOLUTION
• Philosophers such as Montesquieu, Voltaire and Rousseau played
a major role in revolutionary movement.
• French soldiers who fought in American revolution were inspired
by its success and motivated them for French revolution.
• The immediate cause was collapse of the government finances.
• Reign of Louis XIV, King Louis XVI and economic bankruptcy
led to initiate the French revolution.
• The king was not answerable to the people, but his words was
law.
9. CAUSES FOR FRENCH REVOLUTION….
• Due to economic bankruptcy, government forced to raise new taxes.
• Moreover, administration was corrupted and the officials were not worried
about the welfare of the people.
• Entire burden of taxation fell on third estate people including for basic
necessities.
• Middle class people were deprived from their political rights.
10. EVENTS OF THE FRENCHREVOLUTION
The events occurred during French revolution are as mentioned below:
Tennis court oath.
Storming of the bastille.
Declaration of the rights of man.
Destruction of the old regime.
11. RESULTS OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION
• It marked the end of absolute monarchy and a
republic was established in France.
• Liberty, equality & fraternity became the guiding
principles of the French republic.
• A democratic government was established .
• New reforms were introduced for the welfare of
the people.
• The revolution led to the rise of napoleon
Bonaparte as the emperor of France.
12. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
• He was born in 1769 on the Mediterranean island of Corsica.
• In 1785 napoleon was commissioned as lieutenant in the
French army.
• Through his military exploits, Napoleon became the emperor
of France and dominated most part of the Europe by 1810.
• In 1805, napoleon defeated the combined force of Austria &
Russia at the battle of Austerlitz.
13. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
• In 1813 the major European power defeated napoleons forces at
Leipzig.
• The coalition defeated napoleon and exiled him to the island of Elba.
• He fought the battle of waterloo in 1815 by gathering a
small army after being exiled, but he was defeated.
• He spent his last six years under British supervision on
the island of st Helena.
• Napoleon Bonaparte died in 1821.
