This document introduces the 5 components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. It discusses dividing into groups to learn about each component, what each component is, and how to teach it. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in words. Phonics teaches the relationship between letters and sounds. Fluency is reading accurately and quickly. Vocabulary is the words needed to communicate. Comprehension is the reason for reading and is taught through strategies and text interaction.
