That Can Be Us By Thomas Friedman And Michael Mandelbaum
That Used to be Us by Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum discusses the four major challenges that the United States faces, globalization, the
IT revolution, chronic deficits, and energy consumption. The authors also give plausible solutions to the problems facing America and stress the point
that if something is not done now then the United States will face the consequences. Is the American Century Over? by Joseph Nye argues that the
American century is not over, and gives scenarios of possible consequences for America's actions. He also gives a few countries that could possible
take over as the world's leading country. Both books argue that America has serious problems that it is facing today, and that if they are not addressed
it could lead to the downfall of the United States.
Friedman and Mandelbaum are both "frustrated optimists" of America 's future (7). They know the potential American has, and that it is filled with
creative talented and hardworking people that can accomplish almost anything if they work together (Friedman and Mandelbaum, 8). At the same time,
they are frustrated because they discovered that "many of those people feel that our country is not educating the workforce they need, or admitting the
energetic immigrants they seek, or investing in the infrastructure they require, or funding the research they envision, or putting in place the intelligent
tax laws and incentives that our competitors have installed" (Friedman and Mandelbaum, 8). American

Progress Of Educational Reform : Respect For Educators Essay
Progress in Educational Reform: RESPECT for Educators As U.S. public education progresses in the 21st century policy makers and educators must
consider what is needed for successful reform. President Obama firmly believes that, "the strength of the American economy is inextricably linked to
the strength of America's education system. Now more than ever, the American economy needs a workforce that is skilled, adaptable, creative, and
equipped for success in the global marketplace," (The White House, 2016). The foundation of this is strength is laid out in classrooms across America
under the guidance of educators. In order to comprehensively strengthen and reform education the Obama administration teamed up with educators
across the country to craft a Blueprint for Recognizing Educational Success, Professional Excellence and Collaborative Teaching (RESPECT).
RESPECT serves as the framework for parents, students, educators, policymakers, business and community leaders, elected officials, and other partners
to improve America's public education system by rethinking teaching and leading (U.S. Department of Education, 2013). The RESPECT Project is
meant to define teaching and leading for the 21st century. The reform focuses on transforming the teaching profession by high standards for
recruitment and preparation, growth and development, evaluation, compensation and advancement, school climate, and community engagement (U.S.
Department of Education, 2013). The Blueprint for

History Of Curriculum: Common Core Standards
Curriculum: Common Core State Standards and
Pennsylvania Core Standards
There are many approaches that can be taken in order to develop a school's curriculum, or the material that the students will learn. If there were no
federal regulation of curriculum, then it would not be possible to compare student achievement across districts or even states. The federal program,
Common Core State Standards, assists in equaling education across the nation. The Common Core has reinvented the perception of student learning
which, in turn, has caused American education to become a corporate institution. As a result, there has been a threat to states' rights for education as
more rigorous content has been implemented into classrooms by the government, which ultimately changes the role of the teacher.
History of Common Core State Standards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Common Core has been developed as a nationwide measurement for student progress. Officially launched in 2009 as a federal funding bill, the
standards identify skills that every student residing in the United States should master in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics from
kindergarten through 12th grade (Gewertz, 2015). The Common Core itself is not a curriculum, however, it identifies rigorous objectives that must be
met by a school's curriculum. The purpose is to initiate a deeper focus on developmental learning by using interdisciplinary instruction. This redefines
the way that students learn because their progress is no longer assessed on the outcome of their performance, but by the process that has allowed them

Institutional Racism In Schools
School may seem like a safe and comforting place for children of all ethnicities, but this is not the case. America's education system has been plagued
with discrimination and prejudice in the form of a phenomenon called institutional racism. Institutional racism is "a pattern of social institutions– such
as governmental organizations, schools, banks, and courts of law– giving negative treatment to a group of people based on race" ("Institutional Racism
Lesson"). This issue is important because it normalizes racism and introduces children of color to discrimination at a very young age. If we put an end
to racism in schools, it could be a big leap forward in ending it all together. Institutional racism has a lasting impact on the lives of minority students by
lowering their academic performance, limiting future opportunities, and affecting mental and physical health. ("Institutional Racism in School System.")
Some argue that institutional racism does not exist today, or never existed at all. These people say that students of color have trouble in school because
they do not care and do not try hard enough, not because of institutional racism (Pearlstein). They claim that people of color are being dramatic and
looking for something to blame for their problems. Then there are those who admit to the existence of institutional racism but do not think it matters.
Those individuals argue that claiming racism exists in schools is useless and will not do anything to stop

No Child Left Behind Will Reform Our Educational System
(this essay is missing the works cited)
Just three days after taking office in January of 2001 as the forty third president of the United States, George W. Bush announced his plan of No Child
Left Behind. Signed January 8, 2002, it was the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the central federal law in
pre–collegiate education. (Rebora) No Child Left Behind cleared Congress in a landslide with overwhelming majorities. (Seligman) It was said to be the

The bill?s basic aim is to use a testing system to shine a light on schools that are not delivering a quality education. Each child is to be tested annually
from grades third through eight in both math and reading yearly, and once in high school. (Symonds) Tests must be aligned with state academic content
and achievement standards. (Ed gov) By the school year 2007–2008, the same testing will be taking place in sciences. (Ed gov) Today only 29 percent
of the nations eighth graders are proficient in math and just 32 percent read at their grade level. By age seventeen, minority students are four years
behind their white counterparts. (Symonds)
The annual tests to measure children?s progress provide teachers with independent information about each child?s strength and weaknesses. With this
knowledge, teachers can craft lessons to make sure each student is able to meet or exceed the standards.
Principals may also use the data to assess exactly how much progress each teacher?s students have made and to help make decisions on how to run
their schools. (Ed gov) Results of these tests must be made public in annual state and district report cards, so that parents can measure their schools
performance and their states progress. (I ed) Student scores are to be reported individually and by desegregated subgroups, including race, ethnicity,

The United States Education System
The United States is considered by many to be a world leader who excels in every arena. In education, however, the U.S. has fallen behind other
countries in Europe and Asia, such as China, Korea, and Finland. These countries outperform the United States when it comes to education. In order for
the United States to continue to compete in the world economy it has to improve its system of education to compete in changing times. The United
States education system is inferior to many foreign countries education system based on how U.S. students score on tests compared to students in
foreign countries.
Countries are no longer as isolated as they once were and technology has made communication instantaneous. Kagan and Stewart point out that
"globalization is an increasing prominent feature of contemporary societies" ( Kagan and Stewart 185). G. Thomas Houlihan suggests that one of the
problems inherent in the educational system in the United States is the need to balance the American need to control education at a local level versus
the need to produce "a national workforce that is prepared for global competition" (Houlihan 217). He sees the second area of concern to be how to
effect a change in direction in low–performing schools and those with "large achievement gaps between subgroups of students" (Houlihan 217).
According to Houlihan, like other nations, the United States sees education as an "investment in the future" (Houlihan 217). Unlike other nations,

America: Culture Overload
How does one define American culture? Is it the freedom and equality? The mixed religions and races? Is it a compilation of all cultures of the world?
All of these qualities do define American culture. Although the nation's forefathers established the cultural roots of the United States of America, its
culture has changed over time. American culture is something unique and highly dynamic. The American culture developed as a result of immigrant
settlers from all points of the world bringing in their own culture to this nation. The diversity, both culturally and ethnically, comprise the nation, but at
what point does all this diversity become a problem? America's cultural identity of freedom, equality, and diversity could soon be modified to the
extreme by a massive influx of new immigrants who could become the majority of the nation. America, known for its cultural diversity, is on the verge
of losing its cultural identity due to lack of restrictions with regards to immigration, the nation's accommodating mentality towards immigrants and their
culture, and racial stereotype inclination among people in the country. Lack of restrictions in the immigration system create problems for the nation's
cultural identity and will eventually lead to minorities becoming the majority, thereby reshaping American culture. Ishmael Reed shares, "I heard it

system fails to make it clear that bullying is intolerable. Bullying's harmful impact on students' well being has been studied and continues to be

that involves a real or perceived power imbalance" (2014). Bullies can be identified as people who use their power to manipulate or inflict
unnecessary pain on others. In the U.S, bullying rates in secondary school are still on the rise. According to the National Center for Education Statistics

Essay On STEM
Bill Gates once said, "We cannot maintain an innovative economy unless we have well trained people in science, math, and engineering". STEM vs.
STEAM is topic that some people consider not important, however; this argument is what will make the United States education system better or
worse. STEM is what the United States education system is using right now and has great goals for students in grades K–12, while STEAM is trying to
add another component to the system and adds a number of goals to schools; however, even though there is an argument to which should be taught
in schools, they are both important to the United States school system. Since 2001, the American school system has been using STEM. Science,
technology, engineering, and math (STEM), has become a major focal point in today's schools in the United States. STEM originated from the
idea that today's employees lack the skills and talent that was needed in order to succeed in the 21st century economy (Cox, 2017). A major goal
for STEM is to be able to expand the amount of students who decide to pursue advanced degrees and careers in STEM fields and to broaden the
participation of women and minorities working in those specific fields (The National Academies Press, 2011). This goal of expansion has been a
focus for the United States education system for a long time. More than half of the exceptional growth to per capita income in the 20th century can be
thanked by U.S advances in technology and science (The

National Debt Is Necessary For The Funding Of Federal...
National debt is necessary for the funding of federal programs. Government spending is not only a focus of the United State's political system, but it
affects one's personal choices and lifestyle. There is a concern with where and why money is spent. A key aspect of government spending is allocated to
education. Education is fundamental in how one benefits society and the economy. The United States education program is not only necessary for the
success of the country, but it is in need of a more efficient system with increased funding. Education is the foundation of a person's success and way of
life. Graduating from school is important not only for an individual, but it helps the local and national economy. A study by the Alliance for Excellent
Education shows that with higher graduation rates among high school students, the economies of cities, states, and of the country would increase
(Rollins). Compared to the rest of the world, the United States spends a large amount of money on education (U.S. Education). While many may think
this sufficient, Professor Bruce Baker discusses the correlation between supporting schools with federal funding and the success of students, "When
schools have more money, they have greater opportunity to spend productively. When they don't, they can't" (ii, Baker). If students are to graduate and
contribute to the boost of economies, education must be the forefront of federal funding. The United States is spending what seems to be like

Pros And Cons Of Standardized Testing
My personal interest in this controversial topic
Since Middle School, I was not opposed to standardized testing. I thought of it as a way of testing us of what we have learned. Although, after reading
some articles about standardized testing I am re–thinking the pros and cons. From personal experience, I thought of it as a challenge to pass them. But
now that reminisce about it, I noticed some of the cons of standardized testing. I remember having a week or two dedicated for testing, and in case of
students failing they had to take time to redo it. It would take a while for all the students to finish their tests. And after remembering how it was back
in those times I was more on the opposed side.
The act signed in 2002, NCLB, caused for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Parents oppose the standardized tests because they can cause stress and anxiety to their children. Students disagree with many tests because it can cost
them admission to a university, or passing to the next grade. Teachers oppose the tests because it takes too much time. They have to teach their students
what is going to be on the test. Also, the schools and teachers lose funding depending on the results.
What warrants (assumptions) will you imply or state? Why?
First, I will state that standardized testing is not helping education in the United States. This will be stated first because it will clarify my topic.
Secondly, I will imply that there are other ways education in the United States could improve without the use of standardized testing.
Can you maintain an open mind and reverse your views if you come across information you hadn't anticipated?
If I find, research about why standardized testing has helped improve the education in the United States; and, if there is information on how it has
helped students progress over time. I would be open to information that could counter my claims.
What qualifiers will you include in your claim to make it more reasonable and manageable?
One qualifier I will use is standardized testing improving the US education? This will qualify the US education. Also using qualifiers like there are
many students that are opposed to standardized testing. I will also be using some teachers and parents also oppose

Understanding The Educational Gap Between Nevada and...
Understanding the Educational Gap Between Nevada and Wisconsin Statistics is defined as "the science that deals with the collection, classification,
analysis, and numerical facts or data" (Dictionary.com,2012). Sometimes it is important to analyze statistical data in order to understand how
something works or doesn't work. In the case of American public education, there is tons of statistical data being thrown around, but what do all of
these numbers really mean? How does this data help us? Although statistics provide clarity for constant scrutiny to the public education school system,
they also help us to understand what were doing wrong in the classroom. In comparison of two different states, Nevada and Wisconsin lay at two very...

They call this test the High School Proficiency Examination or HSPE. According to the Center on Education Policy (CEP), they administer the
reading, math, and science tests together in grade ten; however, the writing exam is done separately in grade 11 (CEP, 2010, p. 15). Nevada seems
to be the only state that separates the exams into two separate years, but there is no evidence that this could negatively impact their state test scores.
However, Nevada is not a high scoring state. In fact, the national assessment of education progress conducted by IES (Institute of Education
Sciences), shows that all of the scores for Nevada are significantly lower than the national average (2011). The tests used to measure academic
achievement (not the exit exam) is conducted in every state to produce information on how each state is performing individually. So, why is Nevada
testing lower than most states? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question, but it might be helpful to compare Nevada to a state that has
seen more success. Wisconsin is among the nation's best performing states as long as test scores and graduation rates are considered. The state has
higher test scores than the national averages according to IES (2011). Wisconsin, however, is very different than Nevada. For example, Wisconsin is
one of the 22 states that has not adopted an exit exam for its high schools. Because of the differences in curriculums and testing, it makes it difficult

The No Child Left Behing Act
Introduction The Bush administration, as well as others, hoped to close achievement gaps and bring all children up to a higher standard. In order to do
this, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was enacted with the hope of an extreme education reform. It requires strict accountability and assessments for
schools. This was done without proper funding and expectations that are difficult for schools and students to reach. This act caused many problems in
schools rather than fixing the problems that already existed.
Policy Formulation
The Social Problem
Many United States children are failing in the public schooling system. Students are dropping out at alarming rates and those who stay are not
properly prepared for college and careers. There are vast achievement gaps leaving children behind that are minorities, come from low income families,
are disabled, and are English learning (U.S. Department of Education). These problems are apparent to teachers, parents, students, employers, and
society as a whole. This will leave the United States with a workforce that is not properly educated or trained for the jobs available.
This ideology that all children regardless of income, minority, or disability should be able to receive a quality education to prepare them for college
and careers. One of the biggest causes of this achievement gap is unequal funding. Poor, minority children are typically educated in urban schools that
receive less funding than schools in suburban areas that educate

The Importance Of English Education
Based on the numerous sources of sound data available, U.S. is currently out–educated. On the latest Program for International Student Assessment
form 2015, the United States scored an average in reading and science, and below average in math. Results had been unchanged since 2000. U.S.
scores are behind global leaders like Finland, South Korea and Canada. It is not a surprise that Shanghai outscored every other country, in all areas
tested.
As U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Dunkan said at the Foreign Language Summit, 2010: "We have to educate our way to a better economy, just as
our competitors are doing. We see this as a challenge to get better, and one place we obviously need to get better is in teaching languages. TheUnited
States is a long way from being the multi–lingual society that so many of our competitors are. My message to you today is that K–12 schools and
higher education institutions must be part of the solution to our language gap."
A world–class education requires students to read and communicate other languages, in addition to English. We need the Department of Education
support now, more than ever, in implementing second language instruction starting with early education and continuing engaging students in language,
throughout high school and college. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, it is without a doubt of utmost importance for the citizens of
the United States to become fluent in the world languages. As Americans, we have

The Influence Of The Jeanne Clery Act

In 1986, Jeanne Clery was 19 years old living on the campus of Lehigh University. Clery was tortured, raped, and murdered in her dormitory. Both she
and her parents thought she was safe, unbeknownst to them, Lehigh University had a high statistic for violent crimes. People believed the history of
crime would be a known fact about the university, however, there were no standards for reporting of campus crime events. After the murder of their
daughter, Connie and Howard Clery took to Capitol Hill to lobby for change. This paper will discuss the background of the Jeanne Clery Act, how the

In addition, FERPA allows students the right to inspect their education records and pursue appropriate changes to their records (Miller, T. 2017). Also,
established in 1992 was the Campus Sexual Assault Victim's Bill of Rights. This detailed the basic rights afforded to sexual assault victims (Clery
Center, n.d.).
Ten years from the initial groundwork, in 1998, a provision was made that no longer made the outcomes of a student's disciplinary case involving
violence or non–forcible sex offenses protected from disclosure under federal laws concerning the privacy of students (Clery Center, n.d.). There was
also an amendment made that eliminated loopholes in the policy. Eliminating loopholes, the amendment mandated daily security department logs of
crime and expanded the requirements that included areas off–campus. Two years later, an amendment called the Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act
required appropriate law enforcement officials to add to the Annual Security Report a statement about how to find information about registered sex
offenders in and around the area. In 2008, the Higher Education Opportunity Act widened the Clery Act scope. Emergency response and notification
provisions were expanded, hate crimes categorization for reporting was broadened, there were safeguards for whistleblowers implemented, and finally,
the Department of Education is required to annually report on Clery Act compliance. Following a landmark decision, in 2013, the Violence Against

The Future of Education in America
Public Policy Term Paper
The Future of Education in America "We are now taking the lead because for too long the public school system in Camden has failed its children",
exclaimed Chris Christie, the standing Governor of New Jersey. On the one hand, The New Jersey Public School System was awarded number 1 as
the best system in the nation by 2012 Education State Ranking (Morgan, 2011). Yet on the other, only 2 percent of the graduates from CamdenHigh
School scored high enough on the SAT's to be considered college prepared. This blatant inconsistency echoes the hyper–polarization of wealth and
indigence throughout not only the state of New Jersey, but also the country as a whole. In response to this crisis, NJ's Governor Christie has proposed
the Opportunity Scholarship Act, which would stimulate competition between schools and in turn boost the quality of education. The act would create
this competitive open market by providing scholarship funds to eligible low–income children who attend a chronically failing school district in order
for them to choose to attend an alternative public or non–public school. Before thoroughly examining Christie's OSA, it is necessary to zoom out and
discuss the importance and advantage of scholastic development. Education is the fundamental necessity to realize the full extent of opportunity in The

Ways to Improve the U.S. Education System
Although the United States is one of the most highly industrialized nations in the world, students in many other industrialized nations are

soared. No longer are American graduates competing with each other for jobs, in the present global economy, they also are competing with graduates
from other industrialized nations, many of whom are preforming at higher academic levels in reading, math, science, and problem solving as measured
by their performance on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) ("FactSheet"1–2). The PISA is an assessment that is administered

it has been administered every three years since that time. This assessment measures student performance in the areas of reading, mathematics and
science. The 2003 and 2012 administrations of the PISA also measured students' problem solving. On the 2009 administration of the PISA, U.S.

Personal Narrative: My Family
My family is an extremely run of the mill normal family from Korea. We live a very generic life for people who also live in Korea, but compared to
the American standard, our life is kind of poor. My mother's father used to work as a telegraph operator while my mother's mother is the daughter of
said telegraph station's owner. In November 4, 2004. My mother came to the United States of America, and because of that, I became a part of the
many immigrants who came to America to find a better life and create a brighter future while basking in the land of opportunity. When I was seven
years old, my mother heard information about becoming a registered nurse in America from her friends at her hospital. In America, a nurse's
payment is many times more than in Korea. If a person can become a nurse, then the whole family can slowly become integrated into the process of
immigration. Since it's easier for me to get a higher education in America, I decided to stay. As soon as my mother heard about this wonderful
information, she immediately jumped on the idea of pursuing a similar career in America and happily began to prepare for her upcoming tests that
would stress her knowledge of the English language. English tests like the TOEFL and IELTS became building blocks not only for my mother to make
the first step into a brighter world, but also to getting granted her American nursing license and taking one step closer to living the American dream. At

Equity in Education
Introduction
According to Nielsen (2013), in the United States, the government has been working hard in the due process of providing education to the children in
the country. Despite the efforts that have been initiated by theUnited States education department, there is a problem of equity in education access
around the nation. There are a good number of students who do not have the same opportunities as others when it comes to the education sector. For
instance, in most cases, the quality of education that a student will get depends with their social class in the community. Those with a weak living
condition are less likely to have the same quality of education as those who belong to the wealthy families. Therefore, the importance of equity, issues
with sameness and the strategies suggested by Natalie (2013) and the report by the equity and excellence commission will form the basis of discussion
for this paper.

When each child gets equal access to education, the result is always a working and productive portion of the country's population. With the state having

before the Revolutionary War, America has had a long tradition of considering education as one of the cornerstones of proper upbringing. Over the

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is a "landmark in education reform designed to improve student achievement and change the culture of
America's schools" (ED.gov). The new act encourages accountability and helps abolish inequality in education.
The "ultimate goal is to ensure that all students will be proficient in reading and mathematics by 2014"(World News Digest). The National Assessment
of Educational Progress tests students periodically to investigate performance. In 2003, they reported thirty nine percent of white fourth graders,
fourteen percent of Latino students and twelve percent of black students were able to read effectively at grade level. As supporters say, "current
shortcomings in the education system justify such a bold approach" (Issues and Controversies). As one of the necessities, states are required to create
tests and administer them annually to students, measuring their "adequate yearly progress" toward meeting state standards (Issues and Controversies).
Schools that do not meet the mark fall short under the federal law. After two years of failing to meet the standards, schools must offer students the
opportunity to transfer to a school that is not failing, with paid transportation. After three years, the schools must offer private tutoring. Those schools

Therefore, more funding is needed for community colleges because getting the proper help from advisers and having access to more counselors can be
the difference maker in more students graduating and transferring to 4–year colleges.
Second, community colleges need more funding for student services because all students are different and some students won't fully understand the
material being taught in class. More funding is crucial for remedial classes. If community colleges received more funding for programs they can put
some of that money to use by having more remedial classes and giving remedial teachers specialized training. The documentary called Discounted

basis really began in 1867 by a legislation President Andrew Jackson signed into law. The original purpose was to help create effective schools across

The United States Department Of Education
The U.S. Department of Education provides supplemental funding to local school districts to meet the needs of at–risk and low–income students. This
funding is known as Title 1 funding and the schools that receive a portion of this funding are referred to as Title 1 schools. Teachers in Title 1 schools
encounter students facing life struggles that many of us cannot imagine. Encouraging these students to focus in school can be difficult, but it is essential
to overcome the challenge in order for students to achieve academically. Finding ways to engage Title 1 students can be a daunting task due to the fact
that they face daily struggles just to survive. However, teachers must use student motivation techniques to engage these students. These techniques will
assist in the students' success in the classroom. "In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and
passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their
education" (Hidden Curriculum, 2014).
Every teacher encounters the challenge of getting students engaged in work in the classroom. While some students enthusiastically walk into a
classroom each day, others need motivation and inspiration to focus in school. This issue is significant for school leaders because the role of the
school is to provide a place for students to engage and interact with knowledge. If students are not

The U.S. Department of Education's study of 22,000 kindergartners in the kindergarten class of 1998–99, found that Black and Hispanic children were
substantially behind when they entered kindergarten (Children's Defense Fund, 2009). Children from low–income are less likely to participate in high
quality early childhood and pre– kindergarten programs that prepare children to succeed in school. Early Head Start programs serve only 3% of
infants and toddlers from eligible low income families (Fiester, 2010).
Kindergartners whose mothers have a higher education are more likely to score higher in reading, mathematic, and general knowledge. In addition to
having better motor skills, than children whose mothers have less than formal education. (Fiester, 2010). According to a longitudinal study of 3.7
million children who entered kindergarten in 1998. Students who mothers have less than a high school diploma or its equivalent are more likely to be
retained in grade than children whose mothers have a bachelor's or graduate degree (Fiester,2010)
According to Fiester (2010), many children lose ground during the summer months. Low–income children fall behind during the summer by as much
as two months of reading achievement, while middle income peers make improvements.

Essay on American Education in the 1800's
American Education in the 1800's
In the early 1800's education in America grew and developed rapidly, largely because of the works of three very important men: Noah Webster, William
McGuffey, and Horace Mann. These three men were catalysts for the growth of education throughout the nineteenth century, and without them the large
strides America took during this time would not have occurred. These great men all shared one goal: to educate the youth of America as well as
possible. This was no small task, however, because the educational system in place was disorganized and had several large problems that had to be
overcome.
The task of correcting the many problems that faced education in the early 1800's required the genius of many men ... Show more content on

The book was such a success that it was used in classrooms for almost one hundred years (www.ctstateu.edu). Noah Webster's greatest accomplishment
was writing the first truly American dictionary. The book took more than 27 years to complete, and among the nearly 70,000 words featured in it were
truly American words, such as "skunk" and "chowder" (www.christianlaw.com). This book was the work of a lifetime for Webster, and his name is now
nearly synonymous with any modern American dictionary.
Another great contributor to the spread of American educational tools was William McGuffey, author of the widely spread series, Peerless Pioneer
Readers. This series of writings was used in every state of the Union and had a very obvious effect on students in American schools (lib.muohio.edu).
Along with creating such influential educational tools, McGuffey also taught at several prestigious institutions of higher learning, such as Ohio
University and Miami University (www.hfmgv.org). With such a widespread influence caused by not only his educational series but his teaching across
the Midwest, it's no surprise that McGuffey is considered one of the instigators of the rapid improvement of the educational system in America.
The man with the greatest effect on the government's relationship with schools is Horace Mann. Often called the "Father of American Education,"

The, Idiot Nation, By Michael Moore
Idiocy starts in the head and trickles down affecting every aspect of one's life in one form or another often in a reoccurring cycle. It can start with an
idiotic suggestion that leads to an idiotic action which leads to an idiotic situation that affects everyone associated with it. This is the same effect that
authority figures have in American education. Idiocy in authoritative positions have a negative trickle–down effect on America's public education
starting with idiotic politicians and elected officials which leads to news outlets and publications who spread the idiocy of these politicians, and

"In [Bush's] first budget he proposed cutting federal spending on libraries by $39 million ... nearly 19 percent reduction" (Moore, 8) to an already
poorly funded system. Politicians reduce funding for schools and public libraries keeping them from updating their books and maintaining their
buildings that are "literally falling apart" (Moore, 8). This creates terrible learning conditions for student and horrible teaching conditions, as students
are forced into crowded buildings, sometimes lacking a classroom of their own. These conditions were so bad in Washington D.C. the entire "school
system had to delay the start of school for three weeks" (Moore, 8). Yet politicians, like the previously mentioned, newspapers and publications, news
hosts and pundits, choose to focus on television shows, teachers, and teachers' unions as the problem for the failing school systems as reinforced by a
quote from "Chester Finn, a former assistant secretary of education in Bush the Elder's administration, 'If you put out a Ten–Most Wanted list of who's
killing American education, I'm not sure who you would have higher on the list: the teachers' union or the education school faculties" (Moore, 6).

Education: The Down Fall of the U.S.
"Our Nation is at risk." This was the very first line of the 1983 report from President Ronald Reagan's National Commission on Excellence in
Education. The report focused on the growing concern that the American education system was in a rapid decline. With such powerful statements
like "the educational foundations of our society are presently being eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity that threatens our very future as a Nation
and a people" and "If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we
might well have viewed it as an act of war.", the report sent off a firestorm of reform efforts at the local, state, and federal levels.

should be able to show competency in academic discipline.
The fifth and final category, Leadership and Fiscal Support, consisted of six recommendations directed to the people of the United States. In summery
the NCEE recommended "that citizens across the Nation hold educators and elected officials responsible for providing the leadership necessary to
achieve these reforms, and those citizens provide the fiscal support and stability required to bring about the reforms we propose." The NCEE wanted to
emphasize that the federal government was essential in meeting the needs of gifted, socioeconomically disadvantaged, minority, and handicapped
students. To achieve this, the Federal government must ensure that all civil and constitutional rights are complied with. Also seen is the need for
financial, research, and graduate training provided by the Federal government.

Early education of children is so important because it usually decides whether or not the children go to college or be successful in life; so this is the
reason American government should invest more in improving the education for the children of immigrants.
I have read about how immigrants struggle to get their education in the United States because of lack of well qualified ESL teachers, limited resources
in schools for immigrants etc. The education system has been very unfair for the immigrants because very little things are done to help them be more
successful in getting their education. In an article published in Harvard University journal a researcher says, "Even though one out of every four
children in the United States is an immigrant or the U.S.–born child of immigrants, many schools are ill–equipped to meet their needs," which shows
how the education system has not been fair for the immigrants (Tamer). As we all know there are lots of immigrants in United States and I think that
the education system in United States should be changed in such a way that it suits everyone including the immigrants. In the same article Tamer says,
"Even though one out of every four children in the United States is an immigrant or the U.S.–born child of immigrants, many schools are ill–equipped

Why do we do school?
To understand the problems of the educational system, we must first understand how society defines society. "Education the process by which a
society transmits knowledge, values, and expectations to its members so they can function in society." (Ferris & Stein, 2010) Education is
theoretically a process for the members of society to remain aware of what is going on in the world around them. In society, education is used to pass
down generations of information. It also provides a person with basic knowledge about the rules and regulations of society; we also learn what
happens when we break those rules. Sadly, this is not reality. Education today is faced with a plethora of problems.

In the publication of A Nation at Risk (The National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983), we find a fine example of how American
ideologies cause great strife in our children's education. A Nation at Risk was a report that surfaced shortly after the launch of Sputnik. In 1957, the
Soviet Union became the first country to successfully launch an artificial satellite into Earth's orbit. The announcement of the groundbreaking event
became a crisis in the eyes of the American people. The launch of Sputnik instigated part of the Cold War called Space Race. In addition to the
fierce tensions and battles the launch of Sputnik caused, in 1983, the board of education published A Nation at Risk. This publication has proven to
be a momentous occurrence in the history of American education. A Nation at Risk played on America's fear of losing its position as number one.
The repost basically said that we were at risk of losing security, freedom, and essentially everything that makes America great. The report also urged
American schools to work our students harder. We needed our students to be better at math and science so that they would be well prepared to face
any other countries. This is what started the influx of standardized testing, homework, and generally stressing our children. The report goes on to imply
that the blame of education lag should be placed on teachers who do not work hard

The Importance Of Education On Education
What do you think about when you hear the United States of America? What comes to your head? You might be thinking about the big American
dream, which is going to school, studying to become a doctor or anything you want and making millions. When our parents came to America they were
thinking about what was best for our future in education and finance. That is why they came here. So would you think that you or your parents
would be devastated to come to realize that the US is 14th in the world when it comes to education? I am not saying that is bad by any means.
However, if you are the richest country in the world, that also means you have the most resources so there should be no reason to be 14, you should
be 1st, or at least in the top 5.
One of the most well–educated country on the planet is South Korea. South Korea doesn't spend nearly as much on education as the United States.
South Korea spends 11.3 million on education. On the other hand, the United States spends 1 trillion on education. Therefore having a well–educated
nation is not a question of money. According to Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development America spends more on education than
any other nation. ("WHAT country spends the most on education", n.d.). Some of the reasons for this is because about 1.2 million students drop out
each year which is 7000 kids per day. To add on 25 percent of freshmen fail to graduate highschool. On the contrary South Korea doesn't give you an

He then explains that while the US department of education has taken steps to include global knowledge in its curriculum, many schools are
underprepared to teach it given the current set up of our education system, with standardized testing and traditional achievement consuming too

Texas is one of the states that cut funds for Planned Parenthood. After Texas defunded the clinic, a survey of 300 pregnant women who were seeking

Stevenson).
According to the article, "Political Attacks on Planned Parenthood Are a Threat to Women 's Health" for some people, Planned Parenthood has come to
symbolize abortion, which it has provided since 1970. But in all the rhetoric, facts have sometimes gone missing. For example, Senator Jon Kyl of
Arizona declared on the floor of the Senate that abortion accounts for "well over 90 percent" of what Planned Parenthood does. That figure is
actually 3 percent. Planned Parenthood clinics perform one in four abortions in the U.S. but use no federal funds for this practice. To some abortion
opponents, that 3 percent is reason enough to gut the organization. If a future Congress and White House were to do so, however, it would drive
women once again into the back alleys, without necessarily decreasing the number of abortions. Stripping Planned Parenthood of federal funding
would also sacrifice the 97 percent of its public health work that has nothing to do with abortion, from which many people benefit directly. One in five

United States Education : The Common Core And The Current...
Introduction In the United States education has always been a contested issue. In 2009, state leaders in forty–eight states launched the Common Core
standard and currently forty–three states are working to implement the system. The Common Core's main purpose was to prepare American students for
success and to create an even playing field for all students. But is the Common Core really helping students reach their potential?
Main Argument
An assessment, conducted by an assistant professor of education and his associates at University of Southern California, showed that the American test
scores were very low compared to international standards (Porter, Polikoff, & Smithson, 2009). An assessment conducted in 2010 by Andrew Porter,
dean at the University of Pennsylvania, showed the differences between the Common Core and the current state standards. Through his study, he
concluded that Common Core standards improve a student's performance in mathematics but not in English and language arts. The report also states
that "the Common Core standards are also different from the standards of countries with higher student achievement" (Porter, McMaken, Hwang,&
Yang). This differs from the information on the Common Core website, which states " standards from top–performing countries played a significant
role in the development of the math and English language arts/literacy standards." (corestandards.org) In an article written by Ze'ev Wurman, former

Pros And Cons Of Student Loan Fraud
Student Loan Fraud
In February, 2017, the United States District Court in Florida entered a final judgement in a civil trial against FastTrain College, a for–profit college
chain, for falsifying documents used to defraud the Department of Education of more than $12 million (Office of Inspector General, 2017). The owner,
Alejandro Amor, and the school falsified documents to receive federal funding through the Federal Pell Grant Program, the Federal Direct Loan
Program, the Federal Family Education Loan Program, among others which provide federal assistance to students. The school used predatory practices
to entice non–eligible prospective student to lie on their federal student loan applications to receive federal funding, most of which went directly to the
school and Amor. Two years earlier, a judge convicted Amor in a criminal trial for conspiracy to steal government funds and theft of government funds,
leading to a 97–month jail sentence. Student loan fraud makes it more difficult for eligible students to receive federal aid in getting a higher education.
Additionally, the United States government loses millions of dollars of taxpayer money to fraudulent student loan schemes and is unlikely to recover the
total amount lost.

Persuasive Essay On Arts Education
On May 23, 2017, the president's educational budget was publicly released. It gave the people of America a brutal outlook of what the future will hold
for kids attending public education. Aside from the many million–dollar budget cuts, the new proposal would leave a record of 1.6 million students
without an after–school program, most programs of which were centered around the arts. President Trump and the secretary of education, Betsy DeVos,
shaped a finance–plan that would cut approximately $27 million from arts education programs (Langsam, 11). DeVos's validation procedure sparked
the controversial likelihood of there being support for bills, policies, and other legislation that would prove to be destructive to arts education. The
Every Student Succeeds Act, or the ESSA, ensures that every child receives both a beneficial and versatile education. The ESSA not only guarantees
the inclusion of challenging and progressive arts instruction for pre–kindergarten through 12th grade, but it also assures that the arts is integrated
within general scholastic subjects. If the country were to stray away from the policy in place, the ESSA, education for kids would be centered around
privatizing schools or the creation of a voucher system. This in turn would impend the tools and funding needed to guarantee equity for arts education
in America. With the massive financial cut in mind, arts companies and organizations should be required to aid schools in maintaining arts education in

As Maslow hierarchy of needs state, a person can not reach their fullest potential unless they first meet their basic needs. How will this affect their

would it be so easy to implement cuts within education? There are people like president Trump's new elect Betsy Devos who has never been in a

The Decline of The U.S. Education System Essay
Education in the United States has long been a concerned issue for teachers, parents, and communities. It is a major political topic, in which
government has shown continuous efforts to compare and evaluate standards from state to state by creating and monitoring various programs for
overall academic improvement across the country.
Proper education has now become a moral necessity in order for individuals and societies to grow and succeed. Some of the major issues in the U.S.
educational system consist of lack of equality in education, and decline in academic test scores. The U.S. spends more per student than any OECD

to deal with the brutal truth. We have to get much more serious about investing in education." ("USA Today

leaders," 2010, para. 4)
While the U.S. has shown minor improvement in the PISA science test scores from 2006 to 2009 there is still a large margin for improvement needed
in all areas. But questions still remain to be answered as to why there is such a large gap in comparison between the U.S. education and other
countries. In his remarks regarding the release of the PISA results, Secretary Arne Duncan quotes the fact that the OECD has concluded in their study
that the primary issue is not directly related to diversity or disadvantaged backgrounds of public school students but that "Socio–economic disadvantage
leads more directly to poor educational performance in the United States than is the case in many other countries." (Secretary Arne Duncan's Remarks at
OECD's Release of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2009 Results, December 7, 2010)
In addition OECD concluded that, children from single–parent families score much lower in reading than their peers from two–parent or other types of
families, even after accounting for socio–economic background.

That Can Be Us By Thomas Friedman And Michael Mandelbaum

  • 1. That Can Be Us By Thomas Friedman And Michael Mandelbaum That Used to be Us by Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum discusses the four major challenges that the United States faces, globalization, the IT revolution, chronic deficits, and energy consumption. The authors also give plausible solutions to the problems facing America and stress the point that if something is not done now then the United States will face the consequences. Is the American Century Over? by Joseph Nye argues that the American century is not over, and gives scenarios of possible consequences for America's actions. He also gives a few countries that could possible take over as the world's leading country. Both books argue that America has serious problems that it is facing today, and that if they are not addressed it could lead to the downfall of the United States. Friedman and Mandelbaum are both "frustrated optimists" of America 's future (7). They know the potential American has, and that it is filled with creative talented and hardworking people that can accomplish almost anything if they work together (Friedman and Mandelbaum, 8). At the same time, they are frustrated because they discovered that "many of those people feel that our country is not educating the workforce they need, or admitting the energetic immigrants they seek, or investing in the infrastructure they require, or funding the research they envision, or putting in place the intelligent tax laws and incentives that our competitors have installed" (Friedman and Mandelbaum, 8). • 2. Progress Of Educational Reform : Respect For Educators Essay Progress in Educational Reform: RESPECT for Educators As U.S. public education progresses in the 21st century policy makers and educators must consider what is needed for successful reform. President Obama firmly believes that, "the strength of the American economy is inextricably linked to the strength of America's education system. Now more than ever, the American economy needs a workforce that is skilled, adaptable, creative, and equipped for success in the global marketplace," (The White House, 2016). The foundation of this is strength is laid out in classrooms across America under the guidance of educators. In order to comprehensively strengthen and reform education the Obama administration teamed up with educators across the country to craft a Blueprint for Recognizing Educational Success, Professional Excellence and Collaborative Teaching (RESPECT). RESPECT serves as the framework for parents, students, educators, policymakers, business and community leaders, elected officials, and other partners to improve America's public education system by rethinking teaching and leading (U.S. Department of Education, 2013). The RESPECT Project is meant to define teaching and leading for the 21st century. The reform focuses on transforming the teaching profession by high standards for recruitment and preparation, growth and development, evaluation, compensation and advancement, school climate, and community engagement (U.S. Department of Education, 2013). • 3. History Of Curriculum: Common Core Standards Curriculum: Common Core State Standards and Pennsylvania Core Standards There are many approaches that can be taken in order to develop a school's curriculum, or the material that the students will learn. If there were no federal regulation of curriculum, then it would not be possible to compare student achievement across districts or even states. The federal program, Common Core State Standards, assists in equaling education across the nation. The Common Core has reinvented the perception of student learning which, in turn, has caused American education to become a corporate institution. As a result, there has been a threat to states' rights for education as more rigorous content has been implemented into classrooms by the government, which ultimately changes the role of the teacher. History of Common Core State Standards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Common Core has been developed as a nationwide measurement for student progress. Officially launched in 2009 as a federal funding bill, the standards identify skills that every student residing in the United States should master in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics from kindergarten through 12th grade (Gewertz, 2015). The Common Core itself is not a curriculum, however, it identifies rigorous objectives that must be met by a school's curriculum. The purpose is to initiate a deeper focus on developmental learning by using interdisciplinary instruction. This redefines the way that students learn because their progress is no longer assessed on the outcome of their performance, but by the process that has allowed them to reach the ... • 4. Institutional Racism In Schools School may seem like a safe and comforting place for children of all ethnicities, but this is not the case. America's education system has been plagued with discrimination and prejudice in the form of a phenomenon called institutional racism. Institutional racism is "a pattern of social institutions– such as governmental organizations, schools, banks, and courts of law– giving negative treatment to a group of people based on race" ("Institutional Racism Lesson"). This issue is important because it normalizes racism and introduces children of color to discrimination at a very young age. If we put an end to racism in schools, it could be a big leap forward in ending it all together. Institutional racism has a lasting impact on the lives of minority students by lowering their academic performance, limiting future opportunities, and affecting mental and physical health. ("Institutional Racism in School System.") Some argue that institutional racism does not exist today, or never existed at all. These people say that students of color have trouble in school because they do not care and do not try hard enough, not because of institutional racism (Pearlstein). They claim that people of color are being dramatic and looking for something to blame for their problems. Then there are those who admit to the existence of institutional racism but do not think it matters. Those individuals argue that claiming racism exists in schools is useless and will not do anything to stop ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. No Child Left Behind Will Reform Our Educational System... No Child Left Behind Will Reform Our Educational System (this essay is missing the works cited) Just three days after taking office in January of 2001 as the forty third president of the United States, George W. Bush announced his plan of No Child Left Behind. Signed January 8, 2002, it was the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the central federal law in pre–collegiate education. (Rebora) No Child Left Behind cleared Congress in a landslide with overwhelming majorities. (Seligman) It was said to be the most ambitious school reform effort in at least a generation. (Symonds) The bill?s basic aim is to use a testing system to shine a light on schools that are not delivering a quality education. Each child is to be tested annually from grades third through eight in both math and reading yearly, and once in high school. (Symonds) Tests must be aligned with state academic content and achievement standards. (Ed gov) By the school year 2007–2008, the same testing will be taking place in sciences. (Ed gov) Today only 29 percent of the nations eighth graders are proficient in math and just 32 percent read at their grade level. By age seventeen, minority students are four years behind their white counterparts. (Symonds) The annual tests to measure children?s progress provide teachers with independent information about each child?s strength and weaknesses. With this knowledge, teachers can craft lessons to make sure each student is able to meet or exceed the standards. Principals may also use the data to assess exactly how much progress each teacher?s students have made and to help make decisions on how to run their schools. (Ed gov) Results of these tests must be made public in annual state and district report cards, so that parents can measure their schools performance and their states progress. • 6. The United States Education System The United States is considered by many to be a world leader who excels in every arena. In education, however, the U.S. has fallen behind other countries in Europe and Asia, such as China, Korea, and Finland. These countries outperform the United States when it comes to education. In order for the United States to continue to compete in the world economy it has to improve its system of education to compete in changing times. The United States education system is inferior to many foreign countries education system based on how U.S. students score on tests compared to students in foreign countries. Countries are no longer as isolated as they once were and technology has made communication instantaneous. Kagan and Stewart point out that "globalization is an increasing prominent feature of contemporary societies" ( Kagan and Stewart 185). G. Thomas Houlihan suggests that one of the problems inherent in the educational system in the United States is the need to balance the American need to control education at a local level versus the need to produce "a national workforce that is prepared for global competition" (Houlihan 217). He sees the second area of concern to be how to effect a change in direction in low–performing schools and those with "large achievement gaps between subgroups of students" (Houlihan 217). According to Houlihan, like other nations, the United States sees education as an "investment in the future" (Houlihan 217). Unlike other nations, however, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Americ Culture Overload : How Does One Define American... Kelly Aragones Dr. Leslie Burnett ENG 101 Essay 1 17 September 2014 America: Culture Overload How does one define American culture? Is it the freedom and equality? The mixed religions and races? Is it a compilation of all cultures of the world? All of these qualities do define American culture. Although the nation's forefathers established the cultural roots of the United States of America, its culture has changed over time. American culture is something unique and highly dynamic. The American culture developed as a result of immigrant settlers from all points of the world bringing in their own culture to this nation. The diversity, both culturally and ethnically, comprise the nation, but at what point does all this diversity become a problem? America's cultural identity of freedom, equality, and diversity could soon be modified to the extreme by a massive influx of new immigrants who could become the majority of the nation. America, known for its cultural diversity, is on the verge of losing its cultural identity due to lack of restrictions with regards to immigration, the nation's accommodating mentality towards immigrants and their culture, and racial stereotype inclination among people in the country. Lack of restrictions in the immigration system create problems for the nation's cultural identity and will eventually lead to minorities becoming the majority, thereby reshaping American culture. However, with the increase in bullying rates, the U.S education system fails to make it clear that bullying is intolerable. Bullying's harmful impact on students' well being has been studied and continues to be researched. The U.S Department of Health & Human Services defines bullying as the "unwanted aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance" (2014). Bullies can be identified as people who use their power to manipulate or inflict unnecessary pain on others. In the U.S, bullying rates in secondary school are still on the rise. • 9. Essay On STEM Bill Gates once said, "We cannot maintain an innovative economy unless we have well trained people in science, math, and engineering". STEM vs. STEAM is topic that some people consider not important, however; this argument is what will make the United States education system better or worse. STEM is what the United States education system is using right now and has great goals for students in grades K–12, while STEAM is trying to add another component to the system and adds a number of goals to schools; however, even though there is an argument to which should be taught in schools, they are both important to the United States school system. Since 2001, the American school system has been using STEM. Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), has become a major focal point in today's schools in the United States. STEM originated from the idea that today's employees lack the skills and talent that was needed in order to succeed in the 21st century economy (Cox, 2017). A major goal for STEM is to be able to expand the amount of students who decide to pursue advanced degrees and careers in STEM fields and to broaden the participation of women and minorities working in those specific fields (The National Academies Press, 2011). This goal of expansion has been a focus for the United States education system for a long time. More than half of the exceptional growth to per capita income in the 20th century can be thanked by U.S advances in technology and science (The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. National Debt Is Necessary For The Funding Of Federal... National debt is necessary for the funding of federal programs. Government spending is not only a focus of the United State's political system, but it affects one's personal choices and lifestyle. There is a concern with where and why money is spent. A key aspect of government spending is allocated to education. Education is fundamental in how one benefits society and the economy. The United States education program is not only necessary for the success of the country, but it is in need of a more efficient system with increased funding. Education is the foundation of a person's success and way of life. Graduating from school is important not only for an individual, but it helps the local and national economy. A study by the Alliance for Excellent Education shows that with higher graduation rates among high school students, the economies of cities, states, and of the country would increase (Rollins). Compared to the rest of the world, the United States spends a large amount of money on education (U.S. Education). While many may think this sufficient, Professor Bruce Baker discusses the correlation between supporting schools with federal funding and the success of students, "When schools have more money, they have greater opportunity to spend productively. When they don't, they can't" (ii, Baker). If students are to graduate and contribute to the boost of economies, education must be the forefront of federal funding. The United States is spending what seems to be like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Pros And Cons Of Standardized Testing My personal interest in this controversial topic Since Middle School, I was not opposed to standardized testing. I thought of it as a way of testing us of what we have learned. Although, after reading some articles about standardized testing I am re–thinking the pros and cons. From personal experience, I thought of it as a challenge to pass them. But now that reminisce about it, I noticed some of the cons of standardized testing. I remember having a week or two dedicated for testing, and in case of students failing they had to take time to redo it. It would take a while for all the students to finish their tests. And after remembering how it was back in those times I was more on the opposed side. The act signed in 2002, NCLB, caused for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parents oppose the standardized tests because they can cause stress and anxiety to their children. Students disagree with many tests because it can cost them admission to a university, or passing to the next grade. Teachers oppose the tests because it takes too much time. They have to teach their students what is going to be on the test. If I find, research about why standardized testing has helped improve the education in the United States; and, if there is information on how it has helped students progress over time. I would be open to information that could counter my claims. What qualifiers will you include in your claim to make it more reasonable and manageable? One qualifier I will use is standardized testing improving the US education? This will qualify the US education. Also using qualifiers like there are many students that are opposed to standardized testing. I will also be using some teachers and parents also oppose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Understanding The Educational Gap Between Nevada and... Understanding the Educational Gap Between Nevada and Wisconsin Statistics is defined as "the science that deals with the collection, classification, analysis, and numerical facts or data" (Dictionary.com,2012). Sometimes it is important to analyze statistical data in order to understand how something works or doesn't work. In the case of American public education, there is tons of statistical data being thrown around, but what do all of these numbers really mean? How does this data help us? Although statistics provide clarity for constant scrutiny to the public education school system, they also help us to understand what were doing wrong in the classroom. According to the Center on Education Policy (CEP), they administer the reading, math, and science tests together in grade ten; however, the writing exam is done separately in grade 11 (CEP, 2010, p. 15). Nevada seems to be the only state that separates the exams into two separate years, but there is no evidence that this could negatively impact their state test scores. However, Nevada is not a high scoring state. In fact, the national assessment of education progress conducted by IES (Institute of Education Sciences), shows that all of the scores for Nevada are significantly lower than the national average (2011). The tests used to measure academic achievement (not the exit exam) is conducted in every state to produce information on how each state is performing individually. So, why is Nevada testing lower than most states? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question, but it might be helpful to compare Nevada to a state that has seen more success. Wisconsin is among the nation's best performing states as long as test scores and graduation rates are considered. The state has higher test scores than the national averages according to IES (2011). Wisconsin, however, is very different than Nevada. For example, Wisconsin is one of the 22 states that has not adopted an exit exam for its high schools. • 13. The No Child Left Behing Act Introduction The Bush administration, as well as others, hoped to close achievement gaps and bring all children up to a higher standard. In order to do this, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was enacted with the hope of an extreme education reform. It requires strict accountability and assessments for schools. This was done without proper funding and expectations that are difficult for schools and students to reach. This act caused many problems in schools rather than fixing the problems that already existed. Policy Formulation The Social Problem Many United States children are failing in the public schooling system. Students are dropping out at alarming rates and those who stay are not properly prepared for college and careers. There are vast achievement gaps leaving children behind that are minorities, come from low income families, are disabled, and are English learning (U.S. Department of Education). These problems are apparent to teachers, parents, students, employers, and society as a whole. This will leave the United States with a workforce that is not properly educated or trained for the jobs available. This ideology that all children regardless of income, minority, or disability should be able to receive a quality education to prepare them for college and careers. One of the biggest causes of this achievement gap is unequal funding. On the latest Program for International Student Assessment form 2015, the United States scored an average in reading and science, and below average in math. Results had been unchanged since 2000. U.S. scores are behind global leaders like Finland, South Korea and Canada. It is not a surprise that Shanghai outscored every other country, in all areas tested. As U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Dunkan said at the Foreign Language Summit, 2010: "We have to educate our way to a better economy, just as our competitors are doing. We see this as a challenge to get better, and one place we obviously need to get better is in teaching languages. TheUnited States is a long way from being the multi–lingual society that so many of our competitors are. My message to you today is that K–12 schools and higher education institutions must be part of the solution to our language gap." A world–class education requires students to read and communicate other languages, in addition to English. We need the Department of Education support now, more than ever, in implementing second language instruction starting with early education and continuing engaging students in language, throughout high school and college. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, it is without a doubt of utmost importance for the citizens of the United States to become fluent in the world languages. People believed the history of crime would be a known fact about the university, however, there were no standards for reporting of campus crime events. After the murder of their daughter, Connie and Howard Clery took to Capitol Hill to lobby for change. Also, established in 1992 was the Campus Sexual Assault Victim's Bill of Rights. This detailed the basic rights afforded to sexual assault victims (Clery Center, n.d.). Ten years from the initial groundwork, in 1998, a provision was made that no longer made the outcomes of a student's disciplinary case involving violence or non–forcible sex offenses protected from disclosure under federal laws concerning the privacy of students (Clery Center, n.d.). There was also an amendment made that eliminated loopholes in the policy. Eliminating loopholes, the amendment mandated daily security department logs of crime and expanded the requirements that included areas off–campus. Two years later, an amendment called the Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act required appropriate law enforcement officials to add to the Annual Security Report a statement about how to find information about registered sex offenders in and around the area. In 2008, the Higher Education Opportunity Act widened the Clery Act scope. Emergency response and notification provisions were expanded, hate crimes categorization for reporting was broadened, there were safeguards for whistleblowers implemented, and finally, the Department of Education is required to annually report on Clery Act compliance. • 16. The Future of Education in America Public Policy Term Paper The Future of Education in America "We are now taking the lead because for too long the public school system in Camden has failed its children", exclaimed Chris Christie, the standing Governor of New Jersey. On the one hand, The New Jersey Public School System was awarded number 1 as the best system in the nation by 2012 Education State Ranking (Morgan, 2011). Yet on the other, only 2 percent of the graduates from CamdenHigh School scored high enough on the SAT's to be considered college prepared. This blatant inconsistency echoes the hyper–polarization of wealth and indigence throughout not only the state of New Jersey, but also the country as a whole. In response to this crisis, NJ's Governor Christie has proposed the Opportunity Scholarship Act, which would stimulate competition between schools and in turn boost the quality of education. The act would create this competitive open market by providing scholarship funds to eligible low–income children who attend a chronically failing school district in order for them to choose to attend an alternative public or non–public school. Before thoroughly examining Christie's OSA, it is necessary to zoom out and discuss the importance and advantage of scholastic development. Ways to Improve the U.S. Education System Although the United States is one of the most highly industrialized nations in the world, students in many other industrialized nations are outperforming U.S. students in various academic areas. As a result, the U.S. has implemented standard–based reform, and its educational costs have soared. No longer are American graduates competing with each other for jobs, in the present global economy, they also are competing with graduates from other industrialized nations, many of whom are preforming at higher academic levels in reading, math, science, and problem solving as measured by their performance on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) ("FactSheet"1–2). We live a very generic life for people who also live in Korea, but compared to the American standard, our life is kind of poor. My mother's father used to work as a telegraph operator while my mother's mother is the daughter of said telegraph station's owner. In November 4, 2004. My mother came to the United States of America, and because of that, I became a part of the many immigrants who came to America to find a better life and create a brighter future while basking in the land of opportunity. When I was seven years old, my mother heard information about becoming a registered nurse in America from her friends at her hospital. In America, a nurse's payment is many times more than in Korea. If a person can become a nurse, then the whole family can slowly become integrated into the process of immigration. Since it's easier for me to get a higher education in America, I decided to stay. As soon as my mother heard about this wonderful information, she immediately jumped on the idea of pursuing a similar career in America and happily began to prepare for her upcoming tests that would stress her knowledge of the English language. English tests like the TOEFL and IELTS became building blocks not only for my mother to make the first step into a brighter world, but also to getting granted her American nursing license and taking one step closer to living the American dream. Importance Of Equity In Education Equity in Education Student's Name Institution Affiliation Equity in Education Introduction According to Nielsen (2013), in the United States, the government has been working hard in the due process of providing education to the children in the country. Despite the efforts that have been initiated by theUnited States education department, there is a problem of equity in education access around the nation. There are a good number of students who do not have the same opportunities as others when it comes to the education sector. For instance, in most cases, the quality of education that a student will get depends with their social class in the community. Those with a weak living condition are less likely to have the same quality of education as those who belong to the wealthy families. Therefore, the importance of equity, issues with sameness and the strategies suggested by Natalie (2013) and the report by the equity and excellence commission will form the basis of discussion for this paper. Importance of education equity Economic improvement When each child gets equal access to education, the result is always a working and productive portion of the country's population. This funding is known as Title 1 funding and the schools that receive a portion of this funding are referred to as Title 1 schools. Teachers in Title 1 schools encounter students facing life struggles that many of us cannot imagine. Encouraging these students to focus in school can be difficult, but it is essential to overcome the challenge in order for students to achieve academically. Finding ways to engage Title 1 students can be a daunting task due to the fact that they face daily struggles just to survive. However, teachers must use student motivation techniques to engage these students. These techniques will assist in the students' success in the classroom. "In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education" (Hidden Curriculum, 2014). Every teacher encounters the challenge of getting students engaged in work in the classroom. These three men were catalysts for the growth of education throughout the nineteenth century, and without them the large strides America took during this time would not have occurred. These great men all shared one goal: to educate the youth of America as well as possible. He concludes the article by including quotes from a couple of the founders of World Savvy, who argues that our "aversion to complexity in our education system" is a hurtle that we must overcome and that "the condition we live in is fundamentally global". Bornstein grips his reader's attention right of the bat by informing them of results of a survey conducted by National Geographic that tested the global literacy of college students in America, and then included the survey for his readers to test themselves. He reveals that less than 30 percent passed this short quiz, a troubling number, and even more alarming if the reader reaches the end of the article and discovers that they, like myself, barely passed or even failed. • 34. Parenthood Is Affordable, The United States Department Of... Many men and women in America don't have insurance or simply cannot afford health care. Planned Parenthood does have professional doctors who specialized in many reproductive health services. Planned Parenthood is affordable, the program takes a patient whether they have insurance or not, not only that, they charge you by how much income you make. Low income Americans have access to these services too. "The United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, for example, created a federal program to provide poor, married women withbirth control. (Alan Guttmacher Institute)" "One in five American women have used the group's services, and three out of four of its patients are considered to have low incomes. (Lynn M. Zott)" According... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Texas is one of the states that cut funds for Planned Parenthood. After Texas defunded the clinic, a survey of 300 pregnant women who were seeking abortions in Texas said that they were unable to access the birth control that they wanted to use in the three months before pregnancy. (Amanda J. Stevenson). According to the article, "Political Attacks on Planned Parenthood Are a Threat to Women 's Health" for some people, Planned Parenthood has come to symbolize abortion, which it has provided since 1970. But in all the rhetoric, facts have sometimes gone missing. For example, Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona declared on the floor of the Senate that abortion accounts for "well over 90 percent" of what Planned Parenthood does. That figure is actually 3 percent. Planned Parenthood clinics perform one in four abortions in the U.S. but use no federal funds for this practice. To some abortion opponents, that 3 percent is reason enough to gut the organization. If a future Congress and White House were to do so, however, it would drive women once again into the back alleys, without necessarily decreasing the number of abortions. Stripping Planned Parenthood of federal funding would also sacrifice the 97 percent of its public health work that has nothing to do with abortion, from which many people benefit directly. • 35. United States Education : The Common Core And The Current... Introduction In the United States education has always been a contested issue. In 2009, state leaders in forty–eight states launched the Common Core standard and currently forty–three states are working to implement the system. The Common Core's main purpose was to prepare American students for success and to create an even playing field for all students. But is the Common Core really helping students reach their potential? Main Argument An assessment, conducted by an assistant professor of education and his associates at University of Southern California, showed that the American test scores were very low compared to international standards (Porter, Polikoff, & Smithson, 2009). An assessment conducted in 2010 by Andrew Porter, dean at the University of Pennsylvania, showed the differences between the Common Core and the current state standards. Through his study, he concluded that Common Core standards improve a student's performance in mathematics but not in English and language arts. The report also states that "the Common Core standards are also different from the standards of countries with higher student achievement" (Porter, McMaken, Hwang,& Yang). This differs from the information on the Common Core website, which states " standards from top–performing countries played a significant role in the development of the math and English language arts/literacy standards." • 36. Pros And Cons Of Student Loan Fraud Student Loan Fraud In February, 2017, the United States District Court in Florida entered a final judgement in a civil trial against FastTrain College, a for–profit college chain, for falsifying documents used to defraud the Department of Education of more than $12 million (Office of Inspector General, 2017). The owner, Alejandro Amor, and the school falsified documents to receive federal funding through the Federal Pell Grant Program, the Federal Direct Loan Program, the Federal Family Education Loan Program, among others which provide federal assistance to students. The school used predatory practices to entice non–eligible prospective student to lie on their federal student loan applications to receive federal funding, most of which went directly to the school and Amor. Two years earlier, a judge convicted Amor in a criminal trial for conspiracy to steal government funds and theft of government funds, leading to a 97–month jail sentence. Student loan fraud makes it more difficult for eligible students to receive federal aid in getting a higher education. Additionally, the United States government loses millions of dollars of taxpayer money to fraudulent student loan schemes and is unlikely to recover the total amount lost. • 37. Persuasive Essay On Arts Education On May 23, 2017, the president's educational budget was publicly released. It gave the people of America a brutal outlook of what the future will hold for kids attending public education. Aside from the many million–dollar budget cuts, the new proposal would leave a record of 1.6 million students without an after–school program, most programs of which were centered around the arts. President Trump and the secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, shaped a finance–plan that would cut approximately $27 million from arts education programs (Langsam, 11). DeVos's validation procedure sparked the controversial likelihood of there being support for bills, policies, and other legislation that would prove to be destructive to arts education. The Every Student Succeeds Act, or the ESSA, ensures that every child receives both a beneficial and versatile education. The ESSA not only guarantees the inclusion of challenging and progressive arts instruction for pre–kindergarten through 12th grade, but it also assures that the arts is integrated within general scholastic subjects. If the country were to stray away from the policy in place, the ESSA, education for kids would be centered around privatizing schools or the creation of a voucher system. This in turn would impend the tools and funding needed to guarantee equity for arts education in America. With the massive financial cut in mind, arts companies and organizations should be required to aid schools in maintaining arts education in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Joao Coutinho,“There Is No Neutral Education. Education Joao Coutinho,"There is no neutral education. Education is either for domestication or for freedom." Therefore I question one to think about the category in which the american school system falls into, are we creating freedom thinkers or robots of government or are our students trap inside this conventional compulsory schooling? School is suppose to be a place where students are to be motivated and taught that all the things in which they dream will become reality. However as time has progressed teachers have been forced to teach certain content and in particular ways, while students are required to learn through the styles implemented by their teacher. What many may not know is that the requirements that teachers and students must follow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Maslow hierarchy of needs state, a person can not reach their fullest potential unless they first meet their basic needs. How will this affect their passion to teach? According to a report released by the Department of Education there has become a more urgent need for teachers as the teacher shortage increases. Educators are beginning to lose their passion for their profession. What example does this set for the children as it relates to education? If they would for one second answer these few questions before making such an immense decision they would stop taking money away from education. Answer this question; if there were more educators and administrators in these government positions, the secretary of education, would it be so easy to implement cuts within education? There are people like president Trump's new elect Betsy Devos who has never been in a classroom or has never held a position within a school. This becomes problematic because she now holds one of the most powerful positions within education: The United States Secretary of Education. "As the head of the US Department of Education, the secretary advises and executes legislation over education policy at both the K–12 and postsecondary levels." In an interview she participated in with a CNN host she was perceived to be unknowledgeable about laws like, Individuals with Disability Act (IDEA), which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Decline of The U.S. Education System Essay Education in the United States has long been a concerned issue for teachers, parents, and communities. It is a major political topic, in which government has shown continuous efforts to compare and evaluate standards from state to state by creating and monitoring various programs for overall academic improvement across the country. Proper education has now become a moral necessity in order for individuals and societies to grow and succeed. Some of the major issues in the U.S. educational system consist of lack of equality in education, and decline in academic test scores. The U.S. spends more per student than any OECD nation, and other countries also seemingly invest funds differently than us. In addition, most countries invest money ... Education Secretary Arne Duncan said "This is an absolute wake–up call for America," "The results are extraordinarily challenging to us and we have to deal with the brutal truth. We have to get much more serious about investing in education." ("USA Today – In ranking, U.S. students trail global leaders," 2010, para. 4) While the U.S. has shown minor improvement in the PISA science test scores from 2006 to 2009 there is still a large margin for improvement needed in all areas. But questions still remain to be answered as to why there is such a large gap in comparison between the U.S. education and other countries. In his remarks regarding the release of the PISA results, Secretary Arne Duncan quotes the fact that the OECD has concluded in their study that the primary issue is not directly related to diversity or disadvantaged backgrounds of public school students but that "Socio–economic disadvantage leads more directly to poor educational performance in the United States than is the case in many other countries." (Secretary Arne Duncan's Remarks at OECD's Release of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2009 Results, December 7, 2010) In addition OECD concluded that, children from single–parent families score much lower in reading than their peers from two–parent or other types of families, even after accounting for socio–economic background.
