Winning Friends and Influencing People: OER and Higher Education Affordability.Marilyn K. Moody
Presentation at the Open Education 2016 Conference, Richmond, VA, November 2, 2016. #opened16
Abstract: Abstract:
Higher Education stakeholders, including students, parents, faculty, administrators, legislators, state higher education boards, trustees, alumni, and donors are all concerned about the high cost of education and its impact on students. Positioning OER within the broader context of college affordability creates interest in the creation and use of OER, as well as powerful allies for OER initiatives. Approaches and examples of how to communicate OER value for affordability efforts and influence these varied stakeholders will be included in this presentation. Portland State University and its use of OER and the creation of open textbooks in the context of university initiatives to increase affordability by reducing student costs for course materials will be described as one example. Insights and lessons learned will also be highlighted

A little bit of context.
St Peters Musheyija is one of the many public primary schools in Uganda which has continued to suffer from perennial neglect. Though it has consistently produced some of the top students in the region, the school lacks a library that matches its compliments.
We firmly believe that the 21st century belongs to Africa, to the growth and development of the many countries in this continent. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The Indian economy is classified into different sectors to simplify the analysis and understanding of economic activities. For Class 10, it's essential to grasp the sectors of the Indian economy, understand their characteristics, and recognize their importance. This guide will provide detailed notes on the Sectors of the Indian Economy Class 10, using specific long-tail keywords to enhance comprehension.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Textbooks for Change - East African Impact
1. Transforming the educational landscape
by providing affordable and accessible
educational material to students
across the globe.
2. Education as a
Human Right
Education acts as a gateway for millions of young
people around the world. It provides young people with
the skills necessary to attain personal success and impact
their community. At Textbooks for Change, we believe that
access to affordable and accessible education should be a
human right for all. Socioeconomic class should not dictate
educational opportunities. Educated youth have the ability to
tackle issues surrounding gender equality, literacy rates and
youth employment in order to reduce poverty and foster
peaceful societies.
Our Impact
in East Africa
We recognize the high cost and low availability of
textbooks and work to create savings and improved
access for students, professors and post-secondary
institutions. We provide substantial supplies of quality
educational material that are accessible in campus libraries.
We seek to improve the overall well-being of the entire
campus community.

Ship the textbooks from Hamilton,
Ontario to a port in Mombasa, Kenya.
This takes roughly 6 weeks.
2016 Goal: donate 100,000 textbooks to 10-15 partner campuses in Kenya.
We have over 50,000 ready to donate now.
Access to textbooks. Resources are
made available in the campus library for
all to access.
4. Why East Africa? Why Textbooks?
How do Textbooks
Benefit Partners?
What textbooks do you
donate?
Under-funded & Under-resourced: The region has seen
population and university enrolment rates increase drastically.
Unfortunately, the government has been unable to keep up
with this influx of students. Subsequently, institutions have
become under-funded and under-resourced.
Testing Our Model: We are taking a strategic approach by
focusing our efforts on partnership development, campus
engagement, and improving the well-being of students
specifically in East Africa. We have established networks,
knowledge, and existing partnerships in the region.
Deficits in Current Materials: There is a significant deficit
in the educational material available to these institutions. By
supplying basic textbooks to the campus libraries we are
directly enabling students to access quality learning material,
and correspondingly lessening the chance that key resources
are unavailable, damaged or checked out.
Interview with Kenyan Librarian:
“Have you, this academic year, turned away students who
needed access to textbooks?”
“Very often. Of 10 students, about 4 might get their request.”
Enhanced Curriculum & Instruction: Textbooks are not
only beneficial for the students, but also for professors as
well. Professors are able to draw on a larger base of quality
material for their course development which improves the
quality of instruction and learning in the classroom.
Cost-Savings for Institutions: The post-secondary
textbook industry in East Africa is very small. Most post-
secondary institutions have to purchase textbooks at high
prices from the UK, less durable textbooks from India, or a
very small number of locally printed/published textbooks. By
receiving Textbooks for Change donations, institutions retain
more funds to invest in other programs to support the
educational experience of students.
Relevant Course Material: Textbooks are sorted in our
fulfilment center and divided into subject categories. Based
on our ongoing insight, feedback, and analysis, we have
identified the following textbooks to be of high need for
donations:
• Medicine, nursing, and sciences
• Business, accounting, finance, economics, and math
• Teaching and childhood development
• Computer science and programming
• Hospitality, tourism and conservation
• Agriculture, ecology, forestry, and animals
• Law and criminology, social sciences and research
methods
Limitations of Digital Material: Universities currently have
access to e-resources, but internet connectivity, insufficient
hardware and student preferences for print material mean
that adoption has been slow.
5. What People Are Saying
“We welcome such an initiative because it means that it’s going to
raise the profile of the university, it’s going to promote a better
reading culture among our students. You cannot be a leader
unless you read.”
William Nyariki

Jomo Kenyatta University, Kenya
“On behalf of Moi University, I wish to sincerely appreciate the
Textbooks for Change organization for the change you've brought
in our University Library! Your donation of books has changed our
studies as the student to book ratio has drastically improved!”
Gabriel Simiyu
MBA Candidate
Moi University, Kenya
“I have to thank everybody who sent these books to us because
they are very much valuable. Frankly speaking, 90% plus of the
books cannot be found here. So you understand what it means to
the people here.”
