A study sent SMS notifications instructing 7 graduate students to go to sleep for over 7.5 hours per night for 3 days to increase their sleep. While total sleep time did not significantly increase, the students reported feeling more rested. One short-term sleeper achieved over 7.5 hours of sleep each night for the first time in years. Though the notifications did not cause the students to sleep at the prompted times, they increased awareness of sleep behaviors. Future work aims to apply this self-notification methodology to meditation practices.
