UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTIONS OF MIRROR NEURONS IN HUMAN BRAIN
BY

R.GOPINATH

gopinathr@go-past.com

“Be the change” is a very often repeated quote of Mahatma Gandhi.

But how will my being the change change “Them”?

The answer is “Mirror Neurons” present in our brain. To understand its functioning, we have to
understand some basics of the functioning of our human brain. Not just this question. Mirror
neurons is the answer for the following questions also:

1) How is it that we are able to feel what others are feeling internally, without even their
mentioning it?
2) How is it that we are able to predict the next action of another person, even while he is
not pronouncing it?
3) How is it that we are able to imitate another person’s actions, mannerisms and even his
voice?
4) Are we all connected, by some form of an invisible network, which auto transmits signals
from one brain to the other?
Yes, there is a network, not the social media engines like facebook, twitter, or another app and
that is one of the mechanisms of our brain and it is called “Mirror Neurons”.

Look at this fascinating picture:

The study on the functions of human brain can be as old as the human race itself. Though in the
beginning it may not have involved the sophisticated tools like EEGs and FMRIs, it was still being
done mostly by using methods of observation and interpretation. One thing that is getting clearly
established is that the mysteries of this brain can not be completely decoded. We can keep trying
and decode as much as we can and with every such discovery, we find that it will open up
another area that needs to be explored.
Surprisingly, these discoveries of this modern era, go to confirm what has been told in the ancient
era scriptures, of Vedhas, Upanishads, and epics like Ramayanam and Mahabharat. Sometimes
we get a feeling that our modern scientific discoveries confirm our ancient wisdom, which at times
were being mocked at as orthodox and baseless beliefs.

Our brain contains more than 100 billion neurons. These neurons connect to each other in a
complex network. These neurons cause all the actions inside us. All organs of our body function
and act as each of these neurons fire and the signal is transmitted through our nervous system. If
they don’t fire, then there will be no action in the respective organ or limbs of our body.

Mirror Neurons
Imagine billions of different supercomputers connected on a local area network (LAN), with each
computer assisting the other (at times directing the other) to achieve a common objective “The
welfare of the Master: That is you”. I had mentioned different supercomputers because each
neuron is different from the other one. The whole set-up is called as Human brain. God has
blessed the human race with such a powerful instrument.

“One great quality of this brain is that it can enhance its performance astronomically
responding to the training that we give to it.”-rg
Let me give you a rudimentary model of how this neural network functions? This is a picture of a
puppet show. There is a puppeteer behind the screen pulling, dragging and letting loose the
strings to give an effect of a dance drama to the audience.

These strings are our nervous system connecting our brain (and spinal cord) and the organs of our
body. If a particular string is pulled, the leg or the hand or the hip of the puppet moves. The same
way as the neurons in our brain fire, they transmit this signal through the nerves creating a
movement (response) in our body organs. When we have a thought, the neurons get activated
and they quickly connect with requisite neurons and put in place an action from our side. All this
happens in micro seconds.

For example if a ball hit by a player is flying towards us, as we are passing by on the road. Our
eyes sent this image to our brain, our brain processed this information and “thought” this ball will
hit us, quickly fired signals to all the motors that operate in our neck, hip and legs to move in a
specific fashion, that suddenly we ducked just on time as the ball flew through close to us and we
escaped unhurt.

Now let me give you another example of the same story but now of a “trained” mind. The ball is
travelling towards the fielder on the cricket field at close to 100kmph. This fielder is trained well
to handle this situation. His eyes sent the signal to his brain, it “thought” this is an opportunity,
this fired signals to the motors on his fore-hand, arms, hips and legs to jump into the air and also
stretch out to catch the ball.

Dr. V.S. Ramachandran is the Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition and Distinguished
Professor with the Psychology Department and Neurosciences Program at the University of
California, San Diego, and Adjunct Professor of Biology at the Salk Institute. He and his research
associates have been able to use the FMRI techniques to film the connection taking place live
between two sets of neurons in brain, and have explained that for every new thought a new
connection is made. These connections are the strings which I have shown in the rudimentary
model above.
Recently researchers discovered another set of networking of the neurons not within the same
person’s brain but between the brain of one person and with that of the other. This finding can be
dated 1990s. The starting point of this discovery was the brain research or the neurons activation
research being performed on macaque monkeys in Parma, Italy. Dr Giacomo Rizzolatti and his
research assistants noticed the activation of the neurons in the motor cortex area of the brain of a
monkey, when one scientist started eating an apple. (They were using electrodes models to map
the electric activity inside the brain of these monkeys)

The neurons fired in the same pattern as when the monkey would have been munching that apple
itself. The motor cortex area of the brain got activated, even while the monkey was not actually
munching. The electrodes signalled significant neuron activity. This was strange.

So the researchers probed deeper and further studied if the same type of effect happens on
humans too and understood there exists a set of neurons, that mirrors the other person in terms
of his actions. This was the beginning of a new chapter in neural science, which till then had the
belief that neurons in one’s brain interact with other in the same person’s brain, but now it is
surprising to see that the neurons of one’s brain interacting with the neurons of another person’s
brain.

It is as if we see ourselves in a mirror and the mirror image is exactly similar to us, but it is not
real, it is just an image. These neurons operate like that

What is more surprising is that the other person did not make any efforts to communicate to the
other person about his intentions and actions. For example let us say two persons are sitting
across the table and talking, and one of them reaches out his hand to pick a glass of water on the
table, the other persons brain shows neuron activity in his brain as if he was reaching for it.

“You see a stranger hurt his toe and you immediately flinch in sympathy, or you notice a friend
wrinkle up his face in disapproving the taste of the food and suddenly your own stomach recoils
at the thought of eating. This ability to instinctively and immediately understand what other people
are experiencing has long baffled neuroscientists, but recent research now suggests a fascinating
explanation: brain cells called mirror neurons.

Observing the same action, such as grasping a cup, in different contexts elicits different levels of
mirror neuron activity in one area of the brain that belongs to the mirror neuron system (right
posterior inferior frontal gyrus). This finding shows that the mirror neuron system does more than
code the observed action (“that’s a grasp”). It also codes the intention behind the action (“that’s a
grasp to drink” or “that’s a grasp to clear the table”)”. Exctrated from the paper published by
Marco Iacoboni, UCLA School of Medicine.

Dr V S Ramachandran uses instruments like electrodes, FMRIs to sort of eavesdrop into the
activity of the nerve cells in the brain. There are a set of neurons in the frontal lobe of our brain
called as the motor command neurons and they control the actions of the hands, and legs.

Whenever we want to do an action, for example if want to reach out to pick a pen on the table,
one set of motor command neurons will fire and make that action happen, and if we want to open
the pen and fill ink into it, another set of neutrons will fire.

The recent discovery about mirror neurons is that a sub-set of these motor neurons (about 20% of
them) will also fire when I am looking at somebody else performing the same action. It is almost
like this neuron is adopting the other person’s point of view and performs a simulation of the other
person’s action.

So, what happens here, do I actually grab at the pen that the other person was reaching to? No,
the intention of the other person was understood by me, but then my brain quickly stopped me to
say that it is not what you want to do, but it is the other person’s intention. Meaning to say, I
empathised, but did not copy that action, because of the conscious awareness in me.

Why is the discovery of the presence of mirror neurons so important?

Because it explains the anchors behind the human qualities like Empathy, Imitating, Emulating
and Influencing.

While observing another person’s actions, our mirror neurons also fire so it makes imitating
simple.

So mirror neurons facilitates coaching by the coach and learning by the student. What might have
taken years of practice, could be passed on in months to the observant student. This also
explains how our civilisation could accelerate the evolution to this level. The inventions of use of
tools, fire, wheel, shelter building and all permeated across territories in few years of their being
used first time. It would have taken centuries to have that improvement for the first time, but later
on it spreads like wild fire, even in times when verbal communication was not all that
sophisticated, leave alone tele-communication.

There are further implications of this discovery. The studies have shown that mirror neurons help
not just imitate the actions but also help in understanding the motive behind the action. For
example when a person in front of us reaches out for a glass of water to drink from it, our mirror
neurons of the motor command area also fire, but when he is placing back that glass or when a
waiter at the table removes the glass from the table, the mirror neurons don’t fire. Meaning that if
there is serious intention behind that action then the mirror neurons are activated.
This is very vital for the quality of Empathy. When we see a person getting hurt, even though our
body does not feel the pain the other person feels but our mind feels and responds to the pain
that his body is undergoing as if we ourselves are being subject to it. The same is true about
happiness also.

One more implication about the finding of the mirror neurons is that it is not just imitating the other
person’s actions but is also able to predict the further moves of that person.

A Football match is on, and the striker has come into the D region and after tackling 3 defense
players is now right in front of the goal keeper, takes aim and kicks the ball at an angle. While
watching this, you realise that your body slightly bended itself as if you were kicking that ball. This
is the first level of mirror neurons firing (Imitating).

The second level is when you are able to precisely predict if the ball will go into the net or will hit
the post and bounce back. While majority of the audience will be at the first level, only a few are
able to reach the second level. People who have played football or having a good knowledge
about the game are able to move to the second level. This shows that prior knowledge of the
subject enhances the functioning of the mirror neurons to the level that we are able to predict the
next move of the other person.

Dr V S Ramachandran and his team have also established that while one set of mirror neurons are
able to imitate the actions of the other person, there are another set of mirror neurons for touch.
When another person is being touched, the mirror neurons in our brain are activated and we
virtually feel the touch. But quickly our conscious awareness brings the information to us, don’t
worry it is not you being touched but it is the other person. You would have observed that when
one patient is being pricked with an injection his attender tightens his arms and sometimes his
face shows the grimace. source: https://youtu.be/l80zgw07W4Y

We have seen so far that:

1) Mirror neurons of the same motor command neurons gets fired by observing the other
persons’ actions. But this happens only where there is a serious intention behind that action.

2) Mirror neurons help us to Understand the motive (Goal of the action) behind that move.

3) They also help us to predict what could be the next move and its motive, so that we can get
adequately prepared. (Anticipate and get ready)

4) Mirror Neurons allows us to be sensitive to the emotions and feelings of the other person and
behave with utmost care.

5) And we can also invoke the same effect in the other person through our actions backed by
powerful intentions.

There are three very important outcomes of reading this article:
1) By using our knowledge of the functioning of the Mirror Neurons we can properly shape and
influence the change in the behaviour of others whom we care.

2) Be prepared well, by having understood the motives behind the actions to face the next move
of the other person.

3) We can use the power of imagination to form new neural connections thereby change our
behaviours for better.

“Be the change” is a very often repeated quote of Mahatma Gandhi.

But how will my being the change change “Them”?

When we become the change that we want to see around us, our thoughts are aligned with that
intention. These thoughts create neuro connections in our brain. The neurons fire as per our
thoughts and also send signals through the network to all parts our our body to behave in sync
with the change that we wanted. So our behaviour is in sync with what we want to be.
Other people are observing us. So their mirror neurons in the frontal lobe of their brain responds
and triggers empathy in them, after repeated exposures those neurons activate their neural
network system to imitate our behaviour. It also conditions the network to emulate our intentions.

When one set of people behave this way, there are others who are observing them, so gradually a
whole crowd starts behaving the way that we are behaving.

You will now appreciate that but for the presence of mirror neurons in our brains, knowledge got
from class room teachings and books reading would have taken years to bring about that change.

That is why in the ancient days the education model of “Gurukul” was established and it was so
very effective. The students stay with the Guru in his place. They all dress alike. Their daily habits
are the same. They chant the same mantras in the same tune maintaining the same voice tone
modulations and mnemonic techniques. That made the the students imbibe complex sutras
running into millions of Slokas and hundreds of thousands of verses and thousands of Hyms.

This accelerated learning techniques have flown down the generations for hundreds of thousands
of years, thereby retaining the litrature even in the absence of written text of the same.

Preparing the mind, by conditioning the body in which it is enshrined was practiced with the help
of rituals, customs, traditions and also with the help of Music, dance and Yogic postures. The best
part to this is the usefulness of meditation. Meditation helps you to use the conscious awareness
at your choice and also to dissolve the awareness by choice. This dissolving is required to
establish the highest order of Empathy. At this highest order of empathy one person’s soul is able
to feel as if it is in the body of the other person, feeling the pain and the pleasure exactly the same
way as the other one.

Dr V S Ramachandran in his talk has mentioned this discovery of the mirror neurons is
substantiating the ancient philosophy that there is no real independent-self aloof from other
human beings inspecting each other, but the whole humanity is invisibly connected by a chain of
neurons talking to each other and influencing each other even without any verbal interactions.
That means that we can not hide anything. So better be that, that we want to be seen as.

Producing huge results, producing them faster and producing them with minimal resources is the
demand of this modern world. The extensive use of technology, the need for money to fulfil the
aspirations in the background of the demand mentioned above is throwing up a new set of
challenges to the people in Leadership positions.

More than anytime in the past, the precious human qualities like Empathy, Morality and Courage
have proven to be the greatest strengths of a leader. People with these qualities are able to lead
better than even people who are having technical qualifications, monetary power and even
political status.
As I had mentioned in the earlier paragraphs that the knowledge of the subject enhances the
activity level of the mirror neurons (Football example) If you as a leader have the knowledge of the
functioning of mirror neurons it will enhance your ability to empathise, initiate and emulate.

For parents, teachers, coaches, managers, supervisors, Trade Union leaders, Political leaders,
Corporate leaders and for all of those in leadership positions, this understanding becomes an
essential resource (Functioning of mirror neurons)

P.S:

A brief note on neurons
Neurons are information messengers. They use electrical impulses and chemical signals to
transmit information between different areas of the brain, and between the brain and the rest of the
nervous system. Everything we think and feel and do would be impossible without the work of
neurons and their support cells, the glial cells called astrocytes and oligodendrocytes.
About 100 billion neurons form a complex and interconnected network in our brain, allowing us to
generate complex thought patterns and actions. Neurons come in all sizes and shapes, but they
mostly have long protrusions that connect to neighboring cells through specialized information-
transmission structures called synapses.

HOW TO ASSESS AND PROTECT THE FAMILY FINANCIAL STATUS
BY

R.GOPINATH

gopinathr@go-past.com

There are lots of similarity between having a good health and having adequate wealth.

The first in the list above is periodic check-ups. It is pertinent that we keep assessing our financial
health at the end of every year and take corrective actions wherever required.

Most of the times during my interactions with our clients they go by their opinions about their
financial status.

It is very common to hear these statements:

“Dont worry I always stay in control, I never exceed my limits so I feel that my assets will be
excess of what I owe to others”

“I have huge assets, So much so, that 7 generations can just sit and eat, without earning and still
something will be left with”

“I feel I am doing well”

“I don’t think that I owe anything to anyone”

“Things are going fine, I have never faced any strain, there is no problem now”

“I am having surplus at the end of every year, moreover I have huge savings”

“I think that there are people who take care of this aspect and they should be doing their job

and so on the list goes.

This is true about health also. Many times even without doing tests people say, “All is fine now” I
feel Ok”, I am normal, I am active, I have no pain in any part of my body, so I’m fit. Haven’t gone
to the doctor for years that itself says how health I am”
But you know to exercise good care and control we need to do scientific tests. We can not just go
by our opinions. We need facts and figures. We need to validate these facts and figures by
professionals.

There are two things which decide our present

PERSONAL FINANCIAL STATUS:

If what we OWE is bigger that what we OWN, then our financial status is not so strong, we can
even say it is WEAK. If both are just equal, then our financial status can be said to be balanced,
but if what we OWN is bigger than what we OWE then our financial status is STRONG.

But even before we quantify both of the above, first let us make a list of to whom all do we OWE
in our life.

1) We owe a lot to our family: They have stood by us at times of difficulties and challenges and
helped us overcome them. They have sacrificed their desired things to ensure that our desire
gets fulfilled. For example the family time given up to achieve a business goal. They have
stood by our side rock solid at times of our disputes with the outer world. They love us without
any expectations in return. Whatever Intellect, Talent and Brand we have acquired over the
period of years would not have been possible without their support. Physically, Emotionally
and Morally they kept supporting us. During good times they shared the joy and multiplied it.
They (elders) blessed us. They Pray for us.

2) We owe to others: We have borrowed money from others, A housing loan advanced to us, the
car loan, personal loans, credit cards. Or we also owe some others for the services they have
rendered.

3) We owe to ourselves: We have invested our full self for our present positions, but we also have
a future. we owe to our future selfs. Say I am now 59 (RG59). Of all that I am receiving today a
part of that earnings belong to RG70, RG71, RG72 and so on. Moreover we have our dreams
about our future, we owe ourselves the fulfilment of such dreams. It could be a passion to
pursue, or a hobby to follow or spiritual involvement or social activities.
Let us make an inventory of what we OWN: What we own can be broadly classified into 3 groups.

1) Our Business assets: For example our equity in our business or The net worth of our business
or the present value of the future income this business is likely to generate. We must
understand here that our business assets can get different valuations based on who is
handling this business. Let us say our business is worth 100C today. Since we have the
intellect, talent and brand as a person the value of the business can be put at 100C or little
more also. But if the business is inherited by our family members who are an innocent bunch
of lovely individuals and not trained to handle this business well then this business may not be
worth 100C in their hands. If they prefer to cash this asset they may get much lesser value,
based on how much of urgency they have is cashing it or the amount of pressure on them by
other partners and stakeholders.

2) Our Personal Assets: These are assets which were bought to be used and enjoyed. They were
not intended to be sold. Assets like residential house, jewellery, home furnishing, comfort
providing machines in the house like refrigerators, washing machines, TV etc., These assets
were primarily bought for one or more of these three reasons: Comfort, Image and Happiness.
Does it mean that these assets have no market value when one ventures to sell them? No,
they may still fetch some money. But they were not bought for that purpose. For example a
residential house in which a person and his family will have a value based on the square feet
area and the locality, but if it is sold then where to reside? So personal assets are not generally
sold for cash. They may be sold to replace it with a better one or because it is obsolete now.

3) Our Financial Assets: Whatever short term, long term investments we have made with an
objective of using the money for a future use. Life Insurance policies, Annuities, Bank Fixed
deposits, Post office savings, Investments in properties (other than one’s own residence),
Equities, Mutual Funds etc. While listing the financial assets we must recall our discussion in
the earlier issues of inscriptions about the 3 dimensions of assets (Safety, Liquidity and Yield)
and also the three natures of the assets (Granularity, Transferability and Transparency).
Without these two considerations the financial assets can not be valued properly.

After assessing what we owe and what we OWN if a situation is found as under: That is to say
what we OWE is more than what we OWN, we must understand that our financial status is weak
and we have to take corrective steps immediately.

PERSONAL ASSETS
FINANCIAL
ASSETS
BUSINESS
ASSETS
WHAT WE OWN
You will appreciate even though apparently the shortfall is so much of the red space seen here but
the actual shortfall could be this:

As explained in the previous paragraphs, the value of the business assets in the hands of the
innocent family can be much less than what it appears on the books. It was also stated that the
personal assets are not for sale. This shortfall is alarming.

It is also possible after scientific assessment we come to know that this situation is where both
what we owe and what we own are equal, we can feel relieved and we can gain mental peace.
What if we find out that what we own is in excess of what we owe:

So far our discussions is about the volume, but now let me explain a very very important aspect of
both these triangles representing what we owe and what we own. This aspect relates to the best
suited asset to match what we owe.

The best suited asset to setoff what we owe to our family, that is to say that in our absence they
should continue to posses financial strength and purchasing power to meet their needs, Life
insurance and Savings made through financial assets will be appropriate. All other assets are less
suitable. This point will be elaborated in the concluding part of this article when we draw a
personal balance sheet and study the net-worth of the person.

The same is true to the aspects related to what we owe to others.

But to setoff what we owe to ourselves the best suited assets will be in the form of annuities and
adequate savings.
Let us understand some of the basics of the financial accounting. Just like the universe is made of
5 elements our finance is made of 5 components listed under:

Let me show you the structure of a personal balance sheet of a person.

How are the assets funded. There are only two ways to fund our assets.
Let us now discuss a case study to understand as to how to determine the financial status and
how to correct the deficit?

Given hereunder is the profit and loss account statement of Mr Ranjan Kumar. He is a
businessman and his wife is a housewife they have two daughters of ages 12 and 7.

We all know that our responsibilities are reflected on the liability side of the balance sheet. So let
us prepare the list of responsibilities in consultation with Mr Ranjan Kumar.
Let us now quantify the same in present values in consultation with Mr Ranjan Kumar,

Our next step will be to make a list of assets held by him and also classify them as to if they are
cash and equivalents (c) or are they investments (i) or are they personal assets (pa) and sum them
up.

As we see from this balance sheet there is an obvious deficit of 185lakhs and considering that the
personal assets should not be counted for setting off the liabilities the short fall is 255lakhs. We
agreed that there are only two ways of funding an asset. 1) by liabilities and 2) by net profit.
Considering that the net profit of Mr Ranjan Kumar was 24 lakhs using that to setoff the liability
can take 6 or 7 years. Till the family is at the risk of a negative net-worth. So the best suited asset
to balance this sheet is a life insurance cover of 255lakhs, for which a part of the net profits alone
need to be set aside. It is also obvious from this balance sheet, there is no other asset that can
suit to match these responsibilities instantly.

Earlier Mr Ranjan Kumar was feeling that all is well with his finance and that he is also generating
surplus every year. But after scientific assessment he could realise the gap and could correct it
timely. This job can be done by professionals trained in the personal finance management and risk
management. Even-though this appears to be a common-sense matter, believe me, it is highly
technical mater and mistakes in assessment can be very costly. This status has to be reviewed
periodically and revised estimates to be worked out.
The great Saint Thiruvalluvar said this in his 479th couplet;

Dangerous two ‘C’ – Corona & Cancer
Authored by: Malay Chitalia
Inspiration: Mr. Radhakrishnan Gopinath
Corona Virus has impacted the life of almost half of the world’s total population, and it’s not over yet. Many people
lost their dear ones during this pandemic. It had an adverse impact across the all the segment of life; health, emotions,
relationships, finance etc.
Being a Financial Planner, I am really concerned about family’s financial health which has lost its bread winner. They
are facing a very tough time at present and the similar situation may prevail for few more years for them.
The pandemic has taught us many lessons and one of them is buying an adequate insurance. Modern Financial Science
has blessed us with two Risk Management strategies namely Insurance & Assurance by which we can protect our
family from any financial disaster. We have learnt the importance of buying adequate medical insurance during this
pandemic. We have also learnt the importance of buying adequate life insurance during this pandemic. But what about
the families whose sole earning member has contracted a demon disease, he / she is alive and the ongoing treatment
cost goes in lakhs & even crores of rupees? Here I am referring to Cancer & its medical, physical, emotional & financial
impact on the patient & and his/her family members. Cancer is the disease which does not allow patient to go to work,
that means income stops, treatment costs the huge sums, and it really tests mental strength of patient & his family
members.
“The pandemic has taught us many lessons and one
of them is buying an adequate insurance.”
When I am writing this article, recovery rate of the COVID-19 infection has improved and hopefully we will get the
vaccine in next few months. But we must not forget the lesson this pandemic has taught us. Buying adequate health
insurance & life insurance is just not enough. We must buy an adequate Critical illness insurance / Cancer specific
insurance. Health Insurance just pays off actual cost of hospitalisation incurred (if any). Life Insurance pays the claim
only when the person dies. Have you imagined the situation when person has not died, regular medical expenses are
piling up & up and income has already stopped as the disease has already sucked the earning capacity of the person?
“Cancer is the disease which does not allow patient
to go to work, his income stops, treatment costs the
huge sums, and it really tests mental strength of
patient & his family members.”
Five aspects to Life beyond Cancer
1) Deciding the right cover for patient and family
I would like to make here a point that having a health insurance for a sufficient amount is inevitable. But along with it,
a family should have a buffer cover which provides an additional security to the family. And that is provided by Critical
Illness policy or Cancer Specific policies which are available at a nominal premium in the market and they can be very
helpful. There are also riders available along with Life Insurance policies which offers such type of “Assurance based
covers”.
Health Insurance is classified as an “Asset Protection Insurance”, where as Critical illness insurance is classified as
“Income Protection Insurance”. The person who has diagnosed with Cancer; may not be able to resume to any income
generating activities for at least next 3 to 4 years. It will result into loss of income for the individual & family. “Loss of
Income due to Illness” must be protected with Critical Illness insurance or Cancer Cover Insurance. Otherwise the
family becomes vulnerable financially. It makes a big relief for a family in trouble when a considerable amount comes
into the family by way of these policies.
Health Insurance is classified as an “Asset Protection
Insurance”, where as Critical illness insurance is
classified as “Income Protection Insurance”.
2) Critical Illness Policy – an asset protection tool
These Assurance based policies play a major role in an Individual’s Financial Planning. I see Critical illness policy as an
Asset protection tool. Every family has some long term financial goals. The goals like Children’s higher education,
Children’s Marriage, and assured Retirement of self, requires a big amount of money. Every family saves through cuts
& pieces on regular basis for these goals. If a disease like Cancer strikes a family, the family compels to break those
savings (assets) to meet the working capital of family & compensates loss of income. If a family has that additional
cover, it saves their assets. It works as a shock absorber in a turbulent time.
Cancer Cover assurance policy will surely retire family members from hassle of arranging finance. They will be able to
pay full attention towards patient’s health & his treatment. Having enough finance will make family members mentally
strong, which plays a vital role in recovering patient from this gigantic disease.
“Loss of Income due to Illness” must be protected
with Critical Illness insurance or Cancer Cover
Insurance.
“The goals like Children’s higher education,
Children’s Marriage, and assured Retirement of
self, requires a big amount of money.”
3) Adequate Finance Plan- a psychological boost for patient
Medical science has proved that when a person is confident, he recovers faster. The people who are not very confident
takes time to recover. How people feels confident? There are many sources which makes the patient feel confident;
caring parents, loving spouse, intimate brother or sister, inspiring thoughts, good books, good videos are few of them.
One of the sources is financial well-being also.
“If a family has that additional cover, it saves their
assets. It works as a shock absorber in a turbulent
time.”
When they are worry-free about the finance part, they will have confidence which will help them recover faster. No
matter what the cost of treatment is; we can comfortably spend the money. Not only that, if need arises we can go
abroad (US, Australia or other medically advanced country) also for treatment. We can afford that also. This feeling
really boosts the confidence and helps the patient to heal faster. On the other side, the people who are worried about
the cost of treatment, loss of their salary or income, they feel anxious & really struggles for recovery.
“Medical science has proved that when a person is
confident, he recovers faster.”
“The people who are worried about the cost of
treatment, loss of their salary or income, they feel
anxious & struggles for recovery.”
4) Living with hope!
There was a time when Cancer was known as a demon. But not anymore. There are people who have already come
out of it. Yuvraj Singh, Lisa Ray, Manisha Koirala, Mumtaz are some of the celebrities who have won the battle against
Cancer. We know that people can come out of it, but it needs adequate care. And that care is costly today.
“We know that people can come out of Cancer, but
it needs adequate care. And that care is costly
today.”
In earlier days, people were afraid of death, but today people are afraid of illness. The reasons are simple; illnesses
are painful not only to the patients but to the relatives also. And the treatment is costly. Whatever capital we have
accumulated in our life time, illnesses may blow away in a single event. We may end-up depriving our children from
their inheritance right of our wealth.
“In earlier days, people were afraid of death, but
today people are afraid of illnesses.”
5) To a vast Majority-Cancer is curable!
With the advent of new medical technological cures, most of the Cancer are curable at the early stages; the catch is
that there is a need to get financially prepared for it. I have learnt one thing from my profession; having an excess
amount of money will not trouble any one; excess money can be utilised for any good cause; but shortage of money
will always be a problem. And it may decide the distance between life & death!
“I have learnt one thing from my profession; having
an excess amount of money will not trouble any
one; excess money can be utilised for any good
cause; but shortage of money will always be a
problem. And it may decide the distance between
life & death!”
Medical science has found out the source of majority of the diseases. But the scientists have not been able to identify
the source of cancer as the Genesis of Cancer is still under research. We all know consuming tobacco leads to Cancer,
but we have come across many people who don’t consume tobacco still they have diagnosed with Cancer. Rich – Poor,
Urban – Rural, Healthy – not so healthy; any one can be a victim.
There is no age for contracting Cancer- it can strike at any age and causes disruption in the lives of the patient and
his/her family. One thing the scientists have researched that consuming tobacco & lineage of Cancer (heredity) in
the family increases the possibility of Cancer. But it can victimise literally any one!
Wishing you a very healthy, wealthy & blissful life!

  • 4. “AN ESSENTIAL RESOURCE FOR ALL THOSE IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS” UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTIONS OF MIRROR NEURONS IN HUMAN BRAIN BY R.GOPINATH gopinathr@go-past.com “Be the change” is a very often repeated quote of Mahatma Gandhi. But how will my being the change change “Them”? The answer is “Mirror Neurons” present in our brain. To understand its functioning, we have to understand some basics of the functioning of our human brain. Not just this question. Mirror neurons is the answer for the following questions also: 1) How is it that we are able to feel what others are feeling internally, without even their mentioning it? 2) How is it that we are able to predict the next action of another person, even while he is not pronouncing it? 3) How is it that we are able to imitate another person’s actions, mannerisms and even his voice? 4) Are we all connected, by some form of an invisible network, which auto transmits signals from one brain to the other? Yes, there is a network, not the social media engines like facebook, twitter, or another app and that is one of the mechanisms of our brain and it is called “Mirror Neurons”. Look at this fascinating picture: The study on the functions of human brain can be as old as the human race itself. Though in the beginning it may not have involved the sophisticated tools like EEGs and FMRIs, it was still being done mostly by using methods of observation and interpretation. One thing that is getting clearly established is that the mysteries of this brain can not be completely decoded. We can keep trying and decode as much as we can and with every such discovery, we find that it will open up another area that needs to be explored.
  • 5. Surprisingly, these discoveries of this modern era, go to confirm what has been told in the ancient era scriptures, of Vedhas, Upanishads, and epics like Ramayanam and Mahabharat. Sometimes we get a feeling that our modern scientific discoveries confirm our ancient wisdom, which at times were being mocked at as orthodox and baseless beliefs. Our brain contains more than 100 billion neurons. These neurons connect to each other in a complex network. These neurons cause all the actions inside us. All organs of our body function and act as each of these neurons fire and the signal is transmitted through our nervous system. If they don’t fire, then there will be no action in the respective organ or limbs of our body. Mirror Neurons Imagine billions of different supercomputers connected on a local area network (LAN), with each computer assisting the other (at times directing the other) to achieve a common objective “The welfare of the Master: That is you”. I had mentioned different supercomputers because each neuron is different from the other one. The whole set-up is called as Human brain. God has blessed the human race with such a powerful instrument. “One great quality of this brain is that it can enhance its performance astronomically responding to the training that we give to it.”-rg Let me give you a rudimentary model of how this neural network functions? This is a picture of a puppet show. There is a puppeteer behind the screen pulling, dragging and letting loose the strings to give an effect of a dance drama to the audience. These strings are our nervous system connecting our brain (and spinal cord) and the organs of our body. If a particular string is pulled, the leg or the hand or the hip of the puppet moves. The same way as the neurons in our brain fire, they transmit this signal through the nerves creating a movement (response) in our body organs. When we have a thought, the neurons get activated and they quickly connect with requisite neurons and put in place an action from our side. All this happens in micro seconds. For example if a ball hit by a player is flying towards us, as we are passing by on the road. Our eyes sent this image to our brain, our brain processed this information and “thought” this ball will hit us, quickly fired signals to all the motors that operate in our neck, hip and legs to move in a specific fashion, that suddenly we ducked just on time as the ball flew through close to us and we escaped unhurt. Now let me give you another example of the same story but now of a “trained” mind. The ball is travelling towards the fielder on the cricket field at close to 100kmph. This fielder is trained well to handle this situation. His eyes sent the signal to his brain, it “thought” this is an opportunity, this fired signals to the motors on his fore-hand, arms, hips and legs to jump into the air and also stretch out to catch the ball. Dr. V.S. Ramachandran is the Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition and Distinguished Professor with the Psychology Department and Neurosciences Program at the University of California, San Diego, and Adjunct Professor of Biology at the Salk Institute. He and his research associates have been able to use the FMRI techniques to film the connection taking place live between two sets of neurons in brain, and have explained that for every new thought a new connection is made. These connections are the strings which I have shown in the rudimentary model above.
  • 6. Recently researchers discovered another set of networking of the neurons not within the same person’s brain but between the brain of one person and with that of the other. This finding can be dated 1990s. The starting point of this discovery was the brain research or the neurons activation research being performed on macaque monkeys in Parma, Italy. Dr Giacomo Rizzolatti and his research assistants noticed the activation of the neurons in the motor cortex area of the brain of a monkey, when one scientist started eating an apple. (They were using electrodes models to map the electric activity inside the brain of these monkeys) The neurons fired in the same pattern as when the monkey would have been munching that apple itself. The motor cortex area of the brain got activated, even while the monkey was not actually munching. The electrodes signalled significant neuron activity. This was strange. So the researchers probed deeper and further studied if the same type of effect happens on humans too and understood there exists a set of neurons, that mirrors the other person in terms of his actions. This was the beginning of a new chapter in neural science, which till then had the belief that neurons in one’s brain interact with other in the same person’s brain, but now it is surprising to see that the neurons of one’s brain interacting with the neurons of another person’s brain. It is as if we see ourselves in a mirror and the mirror image is exactly similar to us, but it is not real, it is just an image. These neurons operate like that What is more surprising is that the other person did not make any efforts to communicate to the other person about his intentions and actions. For example let us say two persons are sitting across the table and talking, and one of them reaches out his hand to pick a glass of water on the table, the other persons brain shows neuron activity in his brain as if he was reaching for it. “You see a stranger hurt his toe and you immediately flinch in sympathy, or you notice a friend wrinkle up his face in disapproving the taste of the food and suddenly your own stomach recoils at the thought of eating. This ability to instinctively and immediately understand what other people
  • 7. are experiencing has long baffled neuroscientists, but recent research now suggests a fascinating explanation: brain cells called mirror neurons. Observing the same action, such as grasping a cup, in different contexts elicits different levels of mirror neuron activity in one area of the brain that belongs to the mirror neuron system (right posterior inferior frontal gyrus). This finding shows that the mirror neuron system does more than code the observed action (“that’s a grasp”). It also codes the intention behind the action (“that’s a grasp to drink” or “that’s a grasp to clear the table”)”. Exctrated from the paper published by Marco Iacoboni, UCLA School of Medicine. Dr V S Ramachandran uses instruments like electrodes, FMRIs to sort of eavesdrop into the activity of the nerve cells in the brain. There are a set of neurons in the frontal lobe of our brain called as the motor command neurons and they control the actions of the hands, and legs. Whenever we want to do an action, for example if want to reach out to pick a pen on the table, one set of motor command neurons will fire and make that action happen, and if we want to open the pen and fill ink into it, another set of neutrons will fire. The recent discovery about mirror neurons is that a sub-set of these motor neurons (about 20% of them) will also fire when I am looking at somebody else performing the same action. It is almost like this neuron is adopting the other person’s point of view and performs a simulation of the other person’s action. So, what happens here, do I actually grab at the pen that the other person was reaching to? No, the intention of the other person was understood by me, but then my brain quickly stopped me to say that it is not what you want to do, but it is the other person’s intention. Meaning to say, I empathised, but did not copy that action, because of the conscious awareness in me. Why is the discovery of the presence of mirror neurons so important? Because it explains the anchors behind the human qualities like Empathy, Imitating, Emulating and Influencing. While observing another person’s actions, our mirror neurons also fire so it makes imitating simple. So mirror neurons facilitates coaching by the coach and learning by the student. What might have taken years of practice, could be passed on in months to the observant student. This also explains how our civilisation could accelerate the evolution to this level. The inventions of use of tools, fire, wheel, shelter building and all permeated across territories in few years of their being used first time. It would have taken centuries to have that improvement for the first time, but later on it spreads like wild fire, even in times when verbal communication was not all that sophisticated, leave alone tele-communication. There are further implications of this discovery. The studies have shown that mirror neurons help not just imitate the actions but also help in understanding the motive behind the action. For example when a person in front of us reaches out for a glass of water to drink from it, our mirror neurons of the motor command area also fire, but when he is placing back that glass or when a waiter at the table removes the glass from the table, the mirror neurons don’t fire. Meaning that if there is serious intention behind that action then the mirror neurons are activated.
  • 8. This is very vital for the quality of Empathy. When we see a person getting hurt, even though our body does not feel the pain the other person feels but our mind feels and responds to the pain that his body is undergoing as if we ourselves are being subject to it. The same is true about happiness also. One more implication about the finding of the mirror neurons is that it is not just imitating the other person’s actions but is also able to predict the further moves of that person. A Football match is on, and the striker has come into the D region and after tackling 3 defense players is now right in front of the goal keeper, takes aim and kicks the ball at an angle. While watching this, you realise that your body slightly bended itself as if you were kicking that ball. This is the first level of mirror neurons firing (Imitating). The second level is when you are able to precisely predict if the ball will go into the net or will hit the post and bounce back. While majority of the audience will be at the first level, only a few are able to reach the second level. People who have played football or having a good knowledge about the game are able to move to the second level. This shows that prior knowledge of the subject enhances the functioning of the mirror neurons to the level that we are able to predict the next move of the other person. Dr V S Ramachandran and his team have also established that while one set of mirror neurons are able to imitate the actions of the other person, there are another set of mirror neurons for touch. When another person is being touched, the mirror neurons in our brain are activated and we virtually feel the touch. But quickly our conscious awareness brings the information to us, don’t worry it is not you being touched but it is the other person. You would have observed that when one patient is being pricked with an injection his attender tightens his arms and sometimes his face shows the grimace. source: https://youtu.be/l80zgw07W4Y We have seen so far that: 1) Mirror neurons of the same motor command neurons gets fired by observing the other persons’ actions. But this happens only where there is a serious intention behind that action. 2) Mirror neurons help us to Understand the motive (Goal of the action) behind that move. 3) They also help us to predict what could be the next move and its motive, so that we can get adequately prepared. (Anticipate and get ready) 4) Mirror Neurons allows us to be sensitive to the emotions and feelings of the other person and behave with utmost care. 5) And we can also invoke the same effect in the other person through our actions backed by powerful intentions. There are three very important outcomes of reading this article: 1) By using our knowledge of the functioning of the Mirror Neurons we can properly shape and influence the change in the behaviour of others whom we care. 2) Be prepared well, by having understood the motives behind the actions to face the next move of the other person. 3) We can use the power of imagination to form new neural connections thereby change our behaviours for better. “Be the change” is a very often repeated quote of Mahatma Gandhi. But how will my being the change change “Them”? When we become the change that we want to see around us, our thoughts are aligned with that intention. These thoughts create neuro connections in our brain. The neurons fire as per our thoughts and also send signals through the network to all parts our our body to behave in sync with the change that we wanted. So our behaviour is in sync with what we want to be.
  • 9. Other people are observing us. So their mirror neurons in the frontal lobe of their brain responds and triggers empathy in them, after repeated exposures those neurons activate their neural network system to imitate our behaviour. It also conditions the network to emulate our intentions. When one set of people behave this way, there are others who are observing them, so gradually a whole crowd starts behaving the way that we are behaving. You will now appreciate that but for the presence of mirror neurons in our brains, knowledge got from class room teachings and books reading would have taken years to bring about that change. That is why in the ancient days the education model of “Gurukul” was established and it was so very effective. The students stay with the Guru in his place. They all dress alike. Their daily habits are the same. They chant the same mantras in the same tune maintaining the same voice tone modulations and mnemonic techniques. That made the the students imbibe complex sutras running into millions of Slokas and hundreds of thousands of verses and thousands of Hyms. This accelerated learning techniques have flown down the generations for hundreds of thousands of years, thereby retaining the litrature even in the absence of written text of the same. Preparing the mind, by conditioning the body in which it is enshrined was practiced with the help of rituals, customs, traditions and also with the help of Music, dance and Yogic postures. The best part to this is the usefulness of meditation. Meditation helps you to use the conscious awareness at your choice and also to dissolve the awareness by choice. This dissolving is required to establish the highest order of Empathy. At this highest order of empathy one person’s soul is able to feel as if it is in the body of the other person, feeling the pain and the pleasure exactly the same way as the other one. Dr V S Ramachandran in his talk has mentioned this discovery of the mirror neurons is substantiating the ancient philosophy that there is no real independent-self aloof from other human beings inspecting each other, but the whole humanity is invisibly connected by a chain of neurons talking to each other and influencing each other even without any verbal interactions. That means that we can not hide anything. So better be that, that we want to be seen as. Producing huge results, producing them faster and producing them with minimal resources is the demand of this modern world. The extensive use of technology, the need for money to fulfil the aspirations in the background of the demand mentioned above is throwing up a new set of challenges to the people in Leadership positions. More than anytime in the past, the precious human qualities like Empathy, Morality and Courage have proven to be the greatest strengths of a leader. People with these qualities are able to lead better than even people who are having technical qualifications, monetary power and even political status.
  • 10. As I had mentioned in the earlier paragraphs that the knowledge of the subject enhances the activity level of the mirror neurons (Football example) If you as a leader have the knowledge of the functioning of mirror neurons it will enhance your ability to empathise, initiate and emulate. For parents, teachers, coaches, managers, supervisors, Trade Union leaders, Political leaders, Corporate leaders and for all of those in leadership positions, this understanding becomes an essential resource (Functioning of mirror neurons) P.S: A brief note on neurons Neurons are information messengers. They use electrical impulses and chemical signals to transmit information between different areas of the brain, and between the brain and the rest of the nervous system. Everything we think and feel and do would be impossible without the work of neurons and their support cells, the glial cells called astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. About 100 billion neurons form a complex and interconnected network in our brain, allowing us to generate complex thought patterns and actions. Neurons come in all sizes and shapes, but they mostly have long protrusions that connect to neighboring cells through specialized information- transmission structures called synapses.
  • 12. HOW TO ASSESS AND PROTECT THE FAMILY FINANCIAL STATUS BY R.GOPINATH gopinathr@go-past.com There are lots of similarity between having a good health and having adequate wealth. The first in the list above is periodic check-ups. It is pertinent that we keep assessing our financial health at the end of every year and take corrective actions wherever required. Most of the times during my interactions with our clients they go by their opinions about their financial status. It is very common to hear these statements: “Dont worry I always stay in control, I never exceed my limits so I feel that my assets will be excess of what I owe to others” “I have huge assets, So much so, that 7 generations can just sit and eat, without earning and still something will be left with” “I feel I am doing well” “I don’t think that I owe anything to anyone” “Things are going fine, I have never faced any strain, there is no problem now” “I am having surplus at the end of every year, moreover I have huge savings” “I think that there are people who take care of this aspect and they should be doing their job and so on the list goes. This is true about health also. Many times even without doing tests people say, “All is fine now” I feel Ok”, I am normal, I am active, I have no pain in any part of my body, so I’m fit. Haven’t gone to the doctor for years that itself says how health I am”
  • 13. But you know to exercise good care and control we need to do scientific tests. We can not just go by our opinions. We need facts and figures. We need to validate these facts and figures by professionals. There are two things which decide our present PERSONAL FINANCIAL STATUS: If what we OWE is bigger that what we OWN, then our financial status is not so strong, we can even say it is WEAK. If both are just equal, then our financial status can be said to be balanced, but if what we OWN is bigger than what we OWE then our financial status is STRONG. But even before we quantify both of the above, first let us make a list of to whom all do we OWE in our life. 1) We owe a lot to our family: They have stood by us at times of difficulties and challenges and helped us overcome them. They have sacrificed their desired things to ensure that our desire gets fulfilled. For example the family time given up to achieve a business goal. They have stood by our side rock solid at times of our disputes with the outer world. They love us without any expectations in return. Whatever Intellect, Talent and Brand we have acquired over the period of years would not have been possible without their support. Physically, Emotionally and Morally they kept supporting us. During good times they shared the joy and multiplied it. They (elders) blessed us. They Pray for us. 2) We owe to others: We have borrowed money from others, A housing loan advanced to us, the car loan, personal loans, credit cards. Or we also owe some others for the services they have rendered. 3) We owe to ourselves: We have invested our full self for our present positions, but we also have a future. we owe to our future selfs. Say I am now 59 (RG59). Of all that I am receiving today a part of that earnings belong to RG70, RG71, RG72 and so on. Moreover we have our dreams about our future, we owe ourselves the fulfilment of such dreams. It could be a passion to pursue, or a hobby to follow or spiritual involvement or social activities.
  • 14. Let us make an inventory of what we OWN: What we own can be broadly classified into 3 groups. 1) Our Business assets: For example our equity in our business or The net worth of our business or the present value of the future income this business is likely to generate. We must understand here that our business assets can get different valuations based on who is handling this business. Let us say our business is worth 100C today. Since we have the intellect, talent and brand as a person the value of the business can be put at 100C or little more also. But if the business is inherited by our family members who are an innocent bunch of lovely individuals and not trained to handle this business well then this business may not be worth 100C in their hands. If they prefer to cash this asset they may get much lesser value, based on how much of urgency they have is cashing it or the amount of pressure on them by other partners and stakeholders. 2) Our Personal Assets: These are assets which were bought to be used and enjoyed. They were not intended to be sold. Assets like residential house, jewellery, home furnishing, comfort providing machines in the house like refrigerators, washing machines, TV etc., These assets were primarily bought for one or more of these three reasons: Comfort, Image and Happiness. Does it mean that these assets have no market value when one ventures to sell them? No, they may still fetch some money. But they were not bought for that purpose. For example a residential house in which a person and his family will have a value based on the square feet area and the locality, but if it is sold then where to reside? So personal assets are not generally sold for cash. They may be sold to replace it with a better one or because it is obsolete now. 3) Our Financial Assets: Whatever short term, long term investments we have made with an objective of using the money for a future use. Life Insurance policies, Annuities, Bank Fixed deposits, Post office savings, Investments in properties (other than one’s own residence), Equities, Mutual Funds etc. While listing the financial assets we must recall our discussion in
  • 15. the earlier issues of inscriptions about the 3 dimensions of assets (Safety, Liquidity and Yield) and also the three natures of the assets (Granularity, Transferability and Transparency). Without these two considerations the financial assets can not be valued properly. After assessing what we owe and what we OWN if a situation is found as under: That is to say what we OWE is more than what we OWN, we must understand that our financial status is weak and we have to take corrective steps immediately. PERSONAL ASSETS FINANCIAL ASSETS BUSINESS ASSETS WHAT WE OWN
  • 16. You will appreciate even though apparently the shortfall is so much of the red space seen here but the actual shortfall could be this: As explained in the previous paragraphs, the value of the business assets in the hands of the innocent family can be much less than what it appears on the books. It was also stated that the personal assets are not for sale. This shortfall is alarming. It is also possible after scientific assessment we come to know that this situation is where both what we owe and what we own are equal, we can feel relieved and we can gain mental peace.
  • 17. What if we find out that what we own is in excess of what we owe: So far our discussions is about the volume, but now let me explain a very very important aspect of both these triangles representing what we owe and what we own. This aspect relates to the best suited asset to match what we owe. The best suited asset to setoff what we owe to our family, that is to say that in our absence they should continue to posses financial strength and purchasing power to meet their needs, Life insurance and Savings made through financial assets will be appropriate. All other assets are less suitable. This point will be elaborated in the concluding part of this article when we draw a personal balance sheet and study the net-worth of the person. The same is true to the aspects related to what we owe to others. But to setoff what we owe to ourselves the best suited assets will be in the form of annuities and adequate savings.
  • 18. Let us understand some of the basics of the financial accounting. Just like the universe is made of 5 elements our finance is made of 5 components listed under: Let me show you the structure of a personal balance sheet of a person. How are the assets funded. There are only two ways to fund our assets.
  • 19. Let us now discuss a case study to understand as to how to determine the financial status and how to correct the deficit? Given hereunder is the profit and loss account statement of Mr Ranjan Kumar. He is a businessman and his wife is a housewife they have two daughters of ages 12 and 7. We all know that our responsibilities are reflected on the liability side of the balance sheet. So let us prepare the list of responsibilities in consultation with Mr Ranjan Kumar.
  • 20. Let us now quantify the same in present values in consultation with Mr Ranjan Kumar, Our next step will be to make a list of assets held by him and also classify them as to if they are cash and equivalents (c) or are they investments (i) or are they personal assets (pa) and sum them up. As we see from this balance sheet there is an obvious deficit of 185lakhs and considering that the personal assets should not be counted for setting off the liabilities the short fall is 255lakhs. We agreed that there are only two ways of funding an asset. 1) by liabilities and 2) by net profit. Considering that the net profit of Mr Ranjan Kumar was 24 lakhs using that to setoff the liability can take 6 or 7 years. Till the family is at the risk of a negative net-worth. So the best suited asset to balance this sheet is a life insurance cover of 255lakhs, for which a part of the net profits alone need to be set aside. It is also obvious from this balance sheet, there is no other asset that can suit to match these responsibilities instantly. Earlier Mr Ranjan Kumar was feeling that all is well with his finance and that he is also generating surplus every year. But after scientific assessment he could realise the gap and could correct it timely. This job can be done by professionals trained in the personal finance management and risk management. Even-though this appears to be a common-sense matter, believe me, it is highly technical mater and mistakes in assessment can be very costly. This status has to be reviewed periodically and revised estimates to be worked out.

  • 23. Dangerous two ‘C’ – Corona & Cancer Authored by: Malay Chitalia Inspiration: Mr. Radhakrishnan Gopinath Corona Virus has impacted the life of almost half of the world’s total population, and it’s not over yet. Many people lost their dear ones during this pandemic. It had an adverse impact across the all the segment of life; health, emotions, relationships, finance etc. Being a Financial Planner, I am really concerned about family’s financial health which has lost its bread winner. They are facing a very tough time at present and the similar situation may prevail for few more years for them. The pandemic has taught us many lessons and one of them is buying an adequate insurance. Modern Financial Science has blessed us with two Risk Management strategies namely Insurance & Assurance by which we can protect our family from any financial disaster. We have learnt the importance of buying adequate medical insurance during this pandemic. We have also learnt the importance of buying adequate life insurance during this pandemic. But what about the families whose sole earning member has contracted a demon disease, he / she is alive and the ongoing treatment cost goes in lakhs & even crores of rupees? Here I am referring to Cancer & its medical, physical, emotional & financial impact on the patient & and his/her family members. Cancer is the disease which does not allow patient to go to work, that means income stops, treatment costs the huge sums, and it really tests mental strength of patient & his family members. “The pandemic has taught us many lessons and one of them is buying an adequate insurance.” When I am writing this article, recovery rate of the COVID-19 infection has improved and hopefully we will get the vaccine in next few months. But we must not forget the lesson this pandemic has taught us. Buying adequate health insurance & life insurance is just not enough. We must buy an adequate Critical illness insurance / Cancer specific insurance. Health Insurance just pays off actual cost of hospitalisation incurred (if any). Life Insurance pays the claim only when the person dies. Have you imagined the situation when person has not died, regular medical expenses are piling up & up and income has already stopped as the disease has already sucked the earning capacity of the person? “Cancer is the disease which does not allow patient to go to work, his income stops, treatment costs the huge sums, and it really tests mental strength of patient & his family members.” Five aspects to Life beyond Cancer
  • 24. 1) Deciding the right cover for patient and family I would like to make here a point that having a health insurance for a sufficient amount is inevitable. But along with it, a family should have a buffer cover which provides an additional security to the family. And that is provided by Critical Illness policy or Cancer Specific policies which are available at a nominal premium in the market and they can be very helpful. There are also riders available along with Life Insurance policies which offers such type of “Assurance based covers”. Health Insurance is classified as an “Asset Protection Insurance”, where as Critical illness insurance is classified as “Income Protection Insurance”. The person who has diagnosed with Cancer; may not be able to resume to any income generating activities for at least next 3 to 4 years. It will result into loss of income for the individual & family. “Loss of Income due to Illness” must be protected with Critical Illness insurance or Cancer Cover Insurance. Otherwise the family becomes vulnerable financially. It makes a big relief for a family in trouble when a considerable amount comes into the family by way of these policies. Health Insurance is classified as an “Asset Protection Insurance”, where as Critical illness insurance is classified as “Income Protection Insurance”. 2) Critical Illness Policy – an asset protection tool These Assurance based policies play a major role in an Individual’s Financial Planning. I see Critical illness policy as an Asset protection tool. Every family has some long term financial goals. The goals like Children’s higher education, Children’s Marriage, and assured Retirement of self, requires a big amount of money. Every family saves through cuts & pieces on regular basis for these goals. If a disease like Cancer strikes a family, the family compels to break those savings (assets) to meet the working capital of family & compensates loss of income. If a family has that additional cover, it saves their assets. It works as a shock absorber in a turbulent time. Cancer Cover assurance policy will surely retire family members from hassle of arranging finance. They will be able to pay full attention towards patient’s health & his treatment. Having enough finance will make family members mentally strong, which plays a vital role in recovering patient from this gigantic disease. “Loss of Income due to Illness” must be protected with Critical Illness insurance or Cancer Cover Insurance.
  • 25. “The goals like Children’s higher education, Children’s Marriage, and assured Retirement of self, requires a big amount of money.” 3) Adequate Finance Plan- a psychological boost for patient Medical science has proved that when a person is confident, he recovers faster. The people who are not very confident takes time to recover. How people feels confident? There are many sources which makes the patient feel confident; caring parents, loving spouse, intimate brother or sister, inspiring thoughts, good books, good videos are few of them. One of the sources is financial well-being also. “If a family has that additional cover, it saves their assets. It works as a shock absorber in a turbulent time.” When they are worry-free about the finance part, they will have confidence which will help them recover faster. No matter what the cost of treatment is; we can comfortably spend the money. Not only that, if need arises we can go abroad (US, Australia or other medically advanced country) also for treatment. We can afford that also. This feeling really boosts the confidence and helps the patient to heal faster. On the other side, the people who are worried about the cost of treatment, loss of their salary or income, they feel anxious & really struggles for recovery. “Medical science has proved that when a person is confident, he recovers faster.” “The people who are worried about the cost of treatment, loss of their salary or income, they feel anxious & struggles for recovery.” 4) Living with hope! There was a time when Cancer was known as a demon. But not anymore. There are people who have already come out of it. Yuvraj Singh, Lisa Ray, Manisha Koirala, Mumtaz are some of the celebrities who have won the battle against Cancer. We know that people can come out of it, but it needs adequate care. And that care is costly today.
  • 26. “We know that people can come out of Cancer, but it needs adequate care. And that care is costly today.” In earlier days, people were afraid of death, but today people are afraid of illness. The reasons are simple; illnesses are painful not only to the patients but to the relatives also. And the treatment is costly. Whatever capital we have accumulated in our life time, illnesses may blow away in a single event. We may end-up depriving our children from their inheritance right of our wealth. “In earlier days, people were afraid of death, but today people are afraid of illnesses.” 5) To a vast Majority-Cancer is curable! With the advent of new medical technological cures, most of the Cancer are curable at the early stages; the catch is that there is a need to get financially prepared for it. I have learnt one thing from my profession; having an excess amount of money will not trouble any one; excess money can be utilised for any good cause; but shortage of money will always be a problem. And it may decide the distance between life & death! “I have learnt one thing from my profession; having an excess amount of money will not trouble any one; excess money can be utilised for any good cause; but shortage of money will always be a problem. And it may decide the distance between life & death!” Medical science has found out the source of majority of the diseases. But the scientists have not been able to identify the source of cancer as the Genesis of Cancer is still under research. We all know consuming tobacco leads to Cancer, but we have come across many people who don’t consume tobacco still they have diagnosed with Cancer. Rich – Poor, Urban – Rural, Healthy – not so healthy; any one can be a victim. There is no age for contracting Cancer- it can strike at any age and causes disruption in the lives of the patient and his/her family. One thing the scientists have researched that consuming tobacco & lineage of Cancer (heredity) in the family increases the possibility of Cancer. But it can victimise literally any one! Wishing you a very healthy, wealthy & blissful life!
