American settlers began moving to Spanish-owned Texas in the 1819, and tensions rose after Mexico gained independence and required settlers to become Mexican citizens and join the Catholic church. The rebellion began when Texans took over the Alamo mission and were killed after refusing to surrender, motivating Texans to surprise attack the Mexican camp and forcing their retreat out of Texas. This established the Lone Star Republic, but annexation by the United States was delayed for 10 years due to a divisive slavery issue between Northern and Southern states, until President Polk finally annexed Texas.
