3. PHASE THE FIRST:
THE MAIDEN
“Don’t you really know,
Durbeyfield, that you are the
lineal representative of the
ancient and knightly family of the
d’Urbervilles . . . ?”
• The poor peddler JOHN
DURBEYFIELD on learning
that he was the ancestor of an
ancient noble family
d'Urbervilles decides to send
his daughter Tess to
d'Urberville mansion, where
they hope Mrs. D'Urberville
will make Tess's fortune.

4. • May Day village dance in Marlott.
• On the way to market, their horse died.
• Because of her guilt over the horse, Tess agrees the plan sending her
to Mrs. d’Urberville.
• She go to d’Urberville and meet with Alec and her mother.
• She finds a letter that is from Mrs. d’Urberville, offering her a job
tending the d’Urbervilles’ fowls.
• Alec come to pick up Tess so Mrs. d’Urberville dress up Tess well.

5. PHASE THE SECOND: MAIDEN NO MORE
• Tess is later find difficulty in her work and Alec help her.
• She goes to the market and discovers about a local fair where she involve in a fight
and Alec come to recue her.
• On the way to home Alec take advantage of her sexually.
• After sometime she comeback home and give birth to baby boy
( sorrow) who died in the early age.
• She want to start a new life and get a chance to milkmaid at the Talbothays Dairy.

6. PHASE THE THIRD: THE RALLY
• Meet with Angel Clark, they become friends.
• Alec offer her to teach but she refuse to him
• They fall in love but Tess hesitated to think about marriage
because of her past.

THE CONSEQUENCE
• Angel tells his family about Tess and they agrees to meet her.
• He propose to her but she refuse the proposal.
• After sometime she accepts his proposal of marriage. Wishing to
inform him of her past, she sends him a letter, which, however,
never reaches him.
• After their marriage, on the wedding night, she confesses her
past experience to him, begging forgiveness. But Angel, shocked
and disillusioned.

8. PHASE THE FIFTH: THE WOMAN PAYS
• Angel is distraught by Tess’s confession.
• Tess wonders if they should get a divorce but she learns that the
law does not allow divorces. Finally Angel tells her she should go
her home and wait until he come for her.
• Angel leave for Brazil and manage to send some money for Tess.

10. PHASE THE SIXTH: THE CONVERT
• Tess sees and hears Alec testifying to his religious conversion,
she is struck with a sudden terror. She withdraws, but Alec also
sees her and runs after her, claiming he has to save her soul.
• Alec asks her to marry him and he proposes that they go to
Africa to be missionaries. Tess replies that she is already
married.
• Alec appears again, saying that he is no longer a preacher, his
love for her has strengthened and he is her true husband.

• When Angel returns regretful from Brazil, she already become
the mistress of Alec.
• But after that she murders Alec in desperation.
• After a brief happy period of concealment with Angel, she is
finally arrested and is executed for her crime.
