The play depicts the mean and materialistic daughters of an elderly man, Mr. Abel Merryweather, who are more concerned with inheriting his belongings than his well-being. When they believe he has died, the daughters Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Jordan rush over to divide up his possessions. However, Mr. Merryweather surprises them by appearing alive and well, having overheard their selfish discussions. He decides to change his will and marry the widow Mrs. Shorrock instead of leaving anything to his greedy daughters.
