GOTHIC NOVEL
The term Gothic fiction refers to a style of writing that is characterized by
elements of fear, horror, death, and gloom, as well as romantic elements, such as
nature, individuality, and very high emotion. These emotions can include fear and
suspense.
This style of fiction began in the mid 1700s with a story titled, The Castle of
Otranto (in 1764), by Horace Walpole. This story was about a doomed family and
is filled with death, desire, and intrigue. This story is considered to be the first of
the Gothic fiction tales, since it encompassed many of the characteristics of the
genre. The term Gothic actually originated as a term belittling the architecture and
art of the period, which was dark, decaying, and dismal.
Characteristicsof the Gothic Novel
1. Setting in a castle.
2. An atmosphere of mystery and suspense.
3. An ancientprophecy
4. Omens, portents, visions.
5. Super Natural
6. High, even overwroughtemotion.
7. Women in distress.
8. Women threatened by a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male.
9. The metonymy of gloomand horror.
1. Setting in a castle. Theaction takes place in and around an old castle,
sometimes seemingly abandoned, sometimes occupied. The castle often
contains secret passages, trap doors, secretrooms,trick panels with hidden
levers, dark or hidden staircases, and possibly ruined sections.
The castle may be near or connected to caves, which lend their own haunting
flavor with their darkness, uneven floors, branchings, claustrophobia, and
mystery. And in horror-gothic, caves are often seem home to terrifying
creatures such as monsters, or deviant forms of humans: vampires, zombies,
wolfmen.
Translated into the modern novel or filmmaking, the setting might be in an old
house or mansion--or even a new house--where unusual camera angles,
sustained close ups during movement, and darkness or shadows create the same
sense of claustrophobia and entrapment. The house might be already dark,
perhaps because it was abandoned, or it might at first seem light and airy, but
either night comes and people turn off the lights to go to bed, or at some
dramatic point the lights will fail (often because of a raging storm).
The goal of the dark and mysterious setting is to create a sense of unease and
foreboding, contributing toward the atmospheric element of fear and dread.
Darkness also allows those sudden and frightening appearance of people,
animals, or monsters.
 2. An atmosphere of mystery and suspense.Thework is pervaded by a
threatening feeling, a fear enhanced by the unknown. This atmosphere is
sometimes advanced when characters see only a glimpse of something--was
that a personrushing out the window or only the wind blowing a curtain? Is
that creaking sound coming from someone's step on the squeaky floor, or
only the normal sounds of the night? Often the plot itself is built around a
mystery, suchas unknown parentage, a disappearance, or some other
inexplicable event. People disappear or show up dead inexplicably. Elements
3, 4, and 5 below contribute to this atmosphere.
 In modern novels and filmmaking, the inexplicable events are often
murders. The bodies are sometimes mutilated in ways that defy explanation-
-"What kind of monster could do this?" or "Here's the body, but there's no
blood." When the corpses start to mount, suspenseis raised as to who will
get killed next. (In filmmaking, the atmosphere can be created largely by the
music. Anyone who has watched a horror movie with the sound off or very
low knows this.)
 3. An ancient prophecy is connected with the castle or its inhabitants
(either former or present). The prophecyis usually obscure, partial, or
confusing. "What could it mean?" In more watered down modern examples,
this may amount to merely a legend: "It's said that the ghost of old man
Krebs still wanders these halls."
 4. Omens, portents, visions. A character may have a disturbing dream
vision, or some phenomenon may be seen as a portent of coming events. For
example, if the statue of the lord of the manor falls over, it may portend his
death. In modern fiction, a character might see something (a shadowy figure
stabbing another shadowy figure) and think that it was a dream. This might
be thought of as an "imitation vision." Sometimes an omen will be used for
foreshadowing, while other writers will tweak the reader by denying
expectation--what we thought was foreshadowinig wasn't.
 5. Supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events. Dramatic, amazing
events occur, such as ghosts or giants walking, or inanimate objects (such as
a suit of armor or painting) coming to life. In some works, the events are
ultimately given a natural explanation, while in others the events are truly
supernatural. As you might imagine, Hollywood uses special effects to a
large degree to provide fire, earthquakes, moving statues, and so forth, often
bluring the line between human-produced, natural, and supernatural events.
 6. High, even overwrought emotion. The narration may be highly
sentimental, and the characters are often overcome by anger, sorrow,
surprise, and especially, terror. Characters suffer from raw nerves and a
feeling of impending doom. Crying and emotional speeches are frequent.
Breathlessness and panic are common. In the filmed gothic, screaming is
common.
 7. Women in distress. As an appeal to the pathos and sympathy of the
reader, the female characters often face events that leave them fainting,
terrified, screaming, and/or sobbing. A lonely, pensive, and oppressed
heroine is often the central figure of the novel, so her sufferings are even
more pronounced and the focus of attention. The women suffer all the more
because they are often abandoned, left alone (either on purposeor by
accident), and have no protectorat times. (In horror-gothic films, when the
guy tells the girl, "Stay here; I'll be right back," you pretty much know that
one of them will soonbe dead.)
 8. Women threatenedby a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male. One or
more male characters has the power, as king, lord of the manor, father, or
guardian, to demand that one or more of the female characters do something
intolerable. The woman may be commanded to marry someone she does not
love (it may even be the powerful male himself), or commit a crime. In
modern gothic novels and films, there is frequently the threat of physical
violation.

 9. The metonymy of gloom and horror. Metonymy is a subtypeof
metaphor, in which something (like rain) is used to stand for something else
(like sorrow). For example, the film industry likes to use metonymy as a
quick shorthand, so we often notice that it is raining in funeral scenes. (This
explains why they never oil the hinges on the doors in gothic novels.) Note
that the following metonymies for "doomand gloom" all suggest some
element of mystery, danger, or the supernatural.
Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights opens with Lockwood, a tenant of Heathcliff's, visiting the
home of his landlord. A subsequentvisit to Wuthering Heights yields an accident
and a curious supernatural encounter, which pique Lockwood'scuriosity. Back at
Thrushcross Grange and recuperating from his illness, Lockwood begs Nelly Dean,
a servant who grew up in Wuthering Heights and now cares for Thrushcross
Grange, to tell him of the history of Heathcliff. Nelly narrates the main plot line
of Wuthering Heights.
Mr. Earnshaw, a Yorkshire Farmer and owner of Wuthering Heights, brings home
an orphan from Liverpool. The boy is named Heathcliff and is raised with the
Earnshaw children, Hindley and Catherine. Catherine loves Heathcliff but Hindley
hates him because Heathcliff has replaced Hindley in Mr. Earnshaw's affection.
After Mr. Earnshaw's death, Hindley does what he can to destroyHeathcliff, but
Catherine and Heathcliff grow up playing wildly on the moors, oblivious of
anything or anyone else — until they encounter the Lintons.
Edgar and Isabella Linton live at Thrushcross Grange and are the complete
opposites ofHeathcliff and Catherine. The Lintons welcome Catherine into their
home but shun Heathcliff. Treated as an outsider once again, Heathcliff begins to
think about revenge. Catherine, at first, splits her time between Heathcliff and
Edgar, but soonshe spends more time with Edgar, which makes Heathcliff jealous.
When Heathcliff overhears Catherine tell Nelly that she can never marry him
(Heathcliff), he leaves Wuthering Heights and is gone for three years.
While he is gone, Catherine continues to court and ends up marrying Edgar. Their
happiness is short-lived because they are from two different worlds, and their
relationship is strained further when Heathcliff returns. Relationships are
complicated even more as Heathcliff winds up living with his enemy, Hindley (and
Hindley's son, Hareton), at Wuthering Heights and marries Isabella, Edgar's sister.
Soonafter Heathcliff's marriage, Catherine gives birth to Edgar's daughter, Cathy,
and dies.
Heathcliff vows revenge and does not care who he hurts while executing it. He
desires to gain controlof Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange and to
destroy everything Edgar Linton holds dear. In order to exact his revenge,
Heathcliff must wait 17 years. Finally, he forces Cathy to marry his son, Linton.
By this time he has controlof the Heights and with Edgar's death, he has controlof
the Grange.
Through all of this, though, the ghost of Catherine haunts Heathcliff. What he truly
desires more than anything else is to be reunited with his soul mate. At the end of
the novel, Heathcliff and Catherine are united in death, and Hareton and Cathy are
going to be united in marriage.
WHY WUTHERING HEIGHTS IS A GOTHIC
NOVEL?
Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" is a fine instance of a Victorian 'female
gothic' novel which features women entrapped within the confines of their
domestic spaceand victimised by patriarchal bullying. Some important features of
the gothic are:
1.The architecture: ancient dilapidated houses, "before passing the threshold...the
date 1500." Ch1. These houses are usually haunted by ghosts. In Ch3 Lockwood
encounters the ghost of Catherine.
2. Ghosts: In Ch.34 "a little boy with a sheep and two lambs" sees the ghosts of
Catherine and Heathcliff.
3. Death and decay: In Ch29 Heathcliff disturbs the grave of Catherine and in
Ch34 he is buried alongside Catherine so that their decaying bodies can become
one.
4. Madness: Both Catherine and Heathcliff are hysterical and almost insane before
their deaths, Chs15 and 33 and 34.
5. Hereditarycurses: Heathcliff's adoption is referred to as, "so from the very
beginning he bred bad feeling in the house."
6. Tyrants: First Hindley and then Heathcliff exercise their authority over the
household of Wuthering Heights.
7. Persecuted maidens: Both the Catherines and Isabella are treated cruelly.
By way of contrast, the elements of romance are:
8.Lovefor Nature: The novel is full of the beauty of moors of Yorkshire.
9. Egoistical: All the characters are egoistical and fiercely independent.
10. Love and its concurrent dilemmas: Catherine in love with two men at the
same time.

GOTHIC NOVEL The term Gothic fiction refers to a style of writing that is characterized by elements of fear, horror, death, and gloom, as well as romantic elements, such as nature, individuality, and very high emotion. These emotions can include fear and suspense. This style of fiction began in the mid 1700s with a story titled, The Castle of Otranto (in 1764), by Horace Walpole. This story was about a doomed family and is filled with death, desire, and intrigue. This story is considered to be the first of the Gothic fiction tales, since it encompassed many of the characteristics of the genre. The term Gothic actually originated as a term belittling the architecture and art of the period, which was dark, decaying, and dismal. Characteristicsof the Gothic Novel 1. Setting in a castle. 2. An atmosphere of mystery and suspense. 3. An ancientprophecy 4. Omens, portents, visions. 5. Super Natural 6. High, even overwroughtemotion. 7. Women in distress. 8. Women threatened by a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male. 9. The metonymy of gloomand horror. 1. Setting in a castle. Theaction takes place in and around an old castle, sometimes seemingly abandoned, sometimes occupied. The castle often contains secret passages, trap doors, secretrooms,trick panels with hidden levers, dark or hidden staircases, and possibly ruined sections. The castle may be near or connected to caves, which lend their own haunting flavor with their darkness, uneven floors, branchings, claustrophobia, and mystery. And in horror-gothic, caves are often seem home to terrifying creatures such as monsters, or deviant forms of humans: vampires, zombies, wolfmen.

Translated into the modern novel or filmmaking, the setting might be in an old house or mansion--or even a new house--where unusual camera angles, sustained close ups during movement, and darkness or shadows create the same sense of claustrophobia and entrapment. The house might be already dark, perhaps because it was abandoned, or it might at first seem light and airy, but either night comes and people turn off the lights to go to bed, or at some dramatic point the lights will fail (often because of a raging storm). The goal of the dark and mysterious setting is to create a sense of unease and foreboding, contributing toward the atmospheric element of fear and dread. Darkness also allows those sudden and frightening appearance of people, animals, or monsters.  2. An atmosphere of mystery and suspense.Thework is pervaded by a threatening feeling, a fear enhanced by the unknown. This atmosphere is sometimes advanced when characters see only a glimpse of something--was that a personrushing out the window or only the wind blowing a curtain? Is that creaking sound coming from someone's step on the squeaky floor, or only the normal sounds of the night? Often the plot itself is built around a mystery, suchas unknown parentage, a disappearance, or some other inexplicable event. People disappear or show up dead inexplicably. Elements 3, 4, and 5 below contribute to this atmosphere.  In modern novels and filmmaking, the inexplicable events are often murders. The bodies are sometimes mutilated in ways that defy explanation- -"What kind of monster could do this?" or "Here's the body, but there's no blood." When the corpses start to mount, suspenseis raised as to who will get killed next. (In filmmaking, the atmosphere can be created largely by the music. Anyone who has watched a horror movie with the sound off or very low knows this.)  3. An ancient prophecy is connected with the castle or its inhabitants (either former or present). The prophecyis usually obscure, partial, or confusing. "What could it mean?" In more watered down modern examples, this may amount to merely a legend: "It's said that the ghost of old man Krebs still wanders these halls."  4. Omens, portents, visions. A character may have a disturbing dream vision, or some phenomenon may be seen as a portent of coming events. For example, if the statue of the lord of the manor falls over, it may portend his death. In modern fiction, a character might see something (a shadowy figure stabbing another shadowy figure) and think that it was a dream. This might
  • 4. be thought of as an "imitation vision." Sometimes an omen will be used for foreshadowing, while other writers will tweak the reader by denying expectation--what we thought was foreshadowinig wasn't.  5. Supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events. Dramatic, amazing events occur, such as ghosts or giants walking, or inanimate objects (such as a suit of armor or painting) coming to life. In some works, the events are ultimately given a natural explanation, while in others the events are truly supernatural. As you might imagine, Hollywood uses special effects to a large degree to provide fire, earthquakes, moving statues, and so forth, often bluring the line between human-produced, natural, and supernatural events.  6. High, even overwrought emotion. The narration may be highly sentimental, and the characters are often overcome by anger, sorrow, surprise, and especially, terror. Characters suffer from raw nerves and a feeling of impending doom. Crying and emotional speeches are frequent. Breathlessness and panic are common. In the filmed gothic, screaming is common.  7. Women in distress. As an appeal to the pathos and sympathy of the reader, the female characters often face events that leave them fainting, terrified, screaming, and/or sobbing. A lonely, pensive, and oppressed heroine is often the central figure of the novel, so her sufferings are even more pronounced and the focus of attention. The women suffer all the more because they are often abandoned, left alone (either on purposeor by accident), and have no protectorat times. (In horror-gothic films, when the guy tells the girl, "Stay here; I'll be right back," you pretty much know that one of them will soonbe dead.)  8. Women threatenedby a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male. One or more male characters has the power, as king, lord of the manor, father, or guardian, to demand that one or more of the female characters do something intolerable. The woman may be commanded to marry someone she does not love (it may even be the powerful male himself), or commit a crime. In modern gothic novels and films, there is frequently the threat of physical violation.   9. The metonymy of gloom and horror. Metonymy is a subtypeof metaphor, in which something (like rain) is used to stand for something else (like sorrow). For example, the film industry likes to use metonymy as a quick shorthand, so we often notice that it is raining in funeral scenes. (This explains why they never oil the hinges on the doors in gothic novels.) Note that the following metonymies for "doomand gloom" all suggest some element of mystery, danger, or the supernatural.
  • 5. Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights opens with Lockwood, a tenant of Heathcliff's, visiting the home of his landlord. A subsequentvisit to Wuthering Heights yields an accident and a curious supernatural encounter, which pique Lockwood'scuriosity. Back at Thrushcross Grange and recuperating from his illness, Lockwood begs Nelly Dean, a servant who grew up in Wuthering Heights and now cares for Thrushcross Grange, to tell him of the history of Heathcliff. Nelly narrates the main plot line of Wuthering Heights. Mr. Earnshaw, a Yorkshire Farmer and owner of Wuthering Heights, brings home an orphan from Liverpool. The boy is named Heathcliff and is raised with the Earnshaw children, Hindley and Catherine. Catherine loves Heathcliff but Hindley hates him because Heathcliff has replaced Hindley in Mr. Earnshaw's affection. After Mr. Earnshaw's death, Hindley does what he can to destroyHeathcliff, but Catherine and Heathcliff grow up playing wildly on the moors, oblivious of anything or anyone else — until they encounter the Lintons. Edgar and Isabella Linton live at Thrushcross Grange and are the complete opposites ofHeathcliff and Catherine. The Lintons welcome Catherine into their home but shun Heathcliff. Treated as an outsider once again, Heathcliff begins to think about revenge. Catherine, at first, splits her time between Heathcliff and Edgar, but soonshe spends more time with Edgar, which makes Heathcliff jealous. When Heathcliff overhears Catherine tell Nelly that she can never marry him (Heathcliff), he leaves Wuthering Heights and is gone for three years. While he is gone, Catherine continues to court and ends up marrying Edgar. Their happiness is short-lived because they are from two different worlds, and their relationship is strained further when Heathcliff returns. Relationships are complicated even more as Heathcliff winds up living with his enemy, Hindley (and Hindley's son, Hareton), at Wuthering Heights and marries Isabella, Edgar's sister. Soonafter Heathcliff's marriage, Catherine gives birth to Edgar's daughter, Cathy, and dies.
  • 6. Heathcliff vows revenge and does not care who he hurts while executing it. He desires to gain controlof Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange and to destroy everything Edgar Linton holds dear. In order to exact his revenge, Heathcliff must wait 17 years. Finally, he forces Cathy to marry his son, Linton. By this time he has controlof the Heights and with Edgar's death, he has controlof the Grange. Through all of this, though, the ghost of Catherine haunts Heathcliff. What he truly desires more than anything else is to be reunited with his soul mate. At the end of the novel, Heathcliff and Catherine are united in death, and Hareton and Cathy are going to be united in marriage. WHY WUTHERING HEIGHTS IS A GOTHIC NOVEL? Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" is a fine instance of a Victorian 'female gothic' novel which features women entrapped within the confines of their domestic spaceand victimised by patriarchal bullying. Some important features of the gothic are: 1.The architecture: ancient dilapidated houses, "before passing the threshold...the date 1500." Ch1. These houses are usually haunted by ghosts. In Ch3 Lockwood encounters the ghost of Catherine. 2. Ghosts: In Ch.34 "a little boy with a sheep and two lambs" sees the ghosts of Catherine and Heathcliff. 3. Death and decay: In Ch29 Heathcliff disturbs the grave of Catherine and in Ch34 he is buried alongside Catherine so that their decaying bodies can become one. 4. Madness: Both Catherine and Heathcliff are hysterical and almost insane before their deaths, Chs15 and 33 and 34. 5. Hereditarycurses: Heathcliff's adoption is referred to as, "so from the very beginning he bred bad feeling in the house."
  • 7. 6. Tyrants: First Hindley and then Heathcliff exercise their authority over the household of Wuthering Heights. 7. Persecuted maidens: Both the Catherines and Isabella are treated cruelly. By way of contrast, the elements of romance are: 8.Lovefor Nature: The novel is full of the beauty of moors of Yorkshire. 9. Egoistical: All the characters are egoistical and fiercely independent. 10. Love and its concurrent dilemmas: Catherine in love with two men at the same time.
