The talk is divided into two sections, with the first section describing and defining the design pattern with a Deployment Example. The second part uses a multi-repository GitHub organization to create a Real World Example of the design pattern.

Hashicorp's Terraform provides a declarative notation (like Puppet) to describe various cloud resources. It is an open-source tool, provider-independent, and thus able to combine resources from multiple cloud platforms and to be extended through plugins. The talk demonstrates how to describe a small web application with Terraform, showing how easily all related components can be started, updated, and stopped. It also shows how to organise larger projects using modules and gives an introduction to writing plugins for one’s own services.

Building cross-region and cross could high availability into your app, a real life use case by Gigaspaces, Nati Shalom, Funder & CTO, Gigaspaces Achieving high levels of availability and disaster recovery in a cloud environment requires the implementation of patterns and practices that introduce redundancy through multi-zone, multi-region, and multi-cloud deployments. As we move towards implementing higher availability, we cannot escape the direct increase in the accidental complexity of the deployment architecture resulting from lack of cloud portability and deployment lifecycle automation. We present how high availability and disaster recovery were achieved in reality by using the Cloudify open source framework on top of AWS. This approach applies to not just AWS but also other public clouds and private cloud environments such as Eucalyptus. The resulting reference architecture provides portable PostgreSQL replication and disaster recovery as well as application tier scalability across zones, regions, and public/private clouds through a unified deployment workflow.

Normally you may wish to consult the Encyclopedia Galáctica to discern the best course of action but your copy is likely out of date. And while the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (HHGTTG) is a wholly remarkable book it doesn’t cover the nuances of cloud computing. At the Dublin Fashion Insights Centre, we are exploring methods of categorising the web into a set of known fashion related topics. This raises questions such as: How many fashion related topics are there? How closely are they related to each other, or to other non-fashion topics? Furthermore, what topic hierarchies exist in this landscape? Using Clojure and MLlib to harness the data available from crowd-sourced websites such as DMOZ (a categorisation of millions of websites) and Common Crawl (a monthly crawl of billions of websites), we are answering these questions to understand fashion in a quantitative manner. The latest generation of big data tools such as Apache Spark routinely handle petabytes of data while also addressing real-world realities like node and network failures. Spark's transformations and operations on data sets are a natural fit with Clojure's everyday use of transformations and reductions. Spark MLlib's excellent implementations of distributed machine learning algorithms puts the power of large-scale analytics in the hands of Clojure developers. At Zalando's Dublin Fashion Insights Centre, we're using the Clojure bindings to Spark and MLlib to answer fashion-related questions that until recently have been nearly impossible to answer quantitatively. Last year at Yahoo, we spent great effort in scaling, stabilizing and making Pig on Tez production ready and by the end of the year retired running Pig jobs on Mapreduce. This talk will detail the performance and resource utilization improvements Yahoo achieved after migrating all Pig jobs to run on Tez. After successful migration and the improved performance we shifted our focus to addressing some of the bottlenecks we identified and new optimization ideas that we came up with to make it go even faster. We will go over the new features and work done in Tez to make that happen like custom YARN ShuffleHandler, reworking DAG scheduling order, serialization changes, etc. We will also cover exciting new features that were added to Pig for performance such as bloom join and byte code generation. A distributed bloom join that can create multiple bloom filters in parallel was straightforward to implement with the flexibility of Tez DAGs. It vastly improved performance and reduced disk and network utilization for our large joins. Byte code generation for projection and filtering of records is another big feature that we are targeting for Pig 0.17 which will speed up processing by reducing the virtual function calls.

FMs have managed to get a lot of attention due to this feature of handling large datasets. It can do text generation, video editing to protein folding and robotics. In case we believe that FMs can help the hospitals and patients in any way, we need to perform some important evaluations, tests to test these assumptions. In this review, we take a walk through Fms and their evaluation regimes assumed clinical value. To clarify on this topic, we reviewed no less than 80 clinical FMs built from the EMR data. Agility and heterogeneity, however, jeopardize data exchanges because representations may build on varying ontologies and data consumers may not rely on the semantic correctness of their queries in the context of semantically heterogeneous, evolving data spaces. Graph data spaces are one example of a powerful model for representing and querying data whose semantics may change over time. To assert and enforce conditions on individual graph data spaces, shape languages (e.g SHACL) have been developed. We investigate the question of how querying and programming can be guarded by reasoning over SHACL constraints in a distributed setting and we sketch a picture of how a future landscape based on semantically heterogeneous data spaces might look like.
