Aim
The aim of this lesson is to enable students to tell the time (o’clock & half-past).
Educational objectives & learning outcomes
At the end of the
lesson students should
be able to :
• Tell the time when it is ‘’o’clock’’ & ‘’half past’’
• Relate their daily activities with the notion of time
Step 1st We introduce the notion of time to students showing a clock or a watch and
asking what it is used for. We explain that we measure time using watches,
clocks, alarms, wall-clocks, pocket-watches etc.
Step 2nd
: We show students the clock indicators, explaining the function of them.
Remember
The big indicator (minute marker) points to the
minutes.
The small indicator (hand hour) points to the hours.

Step 3rd: We give children the following information to remember:
Step 4th : We present the clocks shown in the picture and ask the students to match the
clocks with the time written on the labels.
One hour has 60 minutes.
One half of an hour has 30 minutes.
When the small hand points to a number and the
big one points to 12, then the time is o’clock
(according to the number the big hand points to.
When the small hand is between two numbers and
the big one is at 6, then the time is ‘’half past’’.

Step 5th: We write sentences describing what John did on Saturday morning. We ask
students to mark the time of the actions described in the sentences, in the correct
sequence, on the clocks shown in the picture.
a)John woke up at 9 in the morning.
b) At half past nine he had breakfast.
c) He and his dad went to the park at 10 o’clock.
d) He returned from the park at 12 o’clock at noon.
e) He had lunch at 1 o’clock.
f) At half past four in the afternoonhe went for a walk by the sea.
Step 6th : We give the children the following work sheet as an exercise they can do at
home.
