SKIP COUNTING
Mrs. Shivers
First Grade
 Skip counting means to count by a number other than one
 By skip counting, you are able to count things faster
 Skip counting also helps to learn multiplication
 I need 10 people to the front of the class.
 Stand in a line next to each other facing the class.
 The first person will sit, the next stand, the next sit, the
next stand…. Every other person should be
sitting/standing.
 We will count the people in the line by whispering the
ones sitting and shouting the ones standing.
 Like this… one, TWO, three, FOUR, five, SIX, seven.
 Count the line.
 We have now skip counted by 2’s the line of people.
 We will count by 2’s.
 What number will come next?
 2, 4, 6, 8…..
 Now we need 15 people to the front of the class in a line.
 The first 2 will sit, the next 1 will stand, next 2 will sit, the
next 1 will stand.
 We will again whisper the ones sitting, and shout the
ones standing in the line.
 Now we will count by 3’s.
 What number will come next?
 3, 6, 9, 12, 15….
Tomorrow, we will practice skip
counting with our numbers today, and
start counting by 4’s and 5’s.
 (1.5) Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking.
The student recognizes patterns in numbers and
operations. The student is expected to:
 (A) use patterns to skip count by twos, fives, and
tens;
 (B) find patterns in numbers, including odd and
even;
