This document discusses the three main types of sentences: simple sentences, compound sentences, and complex sentences. Simple sentences contain one independent clause, compound sentences contain two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, and complex sentences contain an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Examples are provided for each type of sentence to illustrate their structures and components.

2. Simple sentence
Simple sentence is a sentence with only one
independent clause.
A simple sentence has the most basic elements
that make it a sentence: a subject, and a verb
Example:
Joe waited for the train.
Joe: subject , waited: verb
The train was late
The train: subject, was: verb

3. Compound sentence refers to a sentence made
up of two independent clauses or complete sentences
connected to one another with a coordinating
conjunction.
Here’s the coordinating conjunction:

Two separate sentences:
A snack of insects may not sound tasty to
you.
Some people eat bugs!
Compound sentence with coordinating

A snack of insects may not sound tasty to
you, but some people eat bugs!

5. Example: 2
Two separate sentences:
Joe waited for the train.
The train was late.
Compound sentence with coordinating
conjunction:
Joe waited for the train but the train was
late.

6. Example: 3
Sentence fragment:
Snackers must choose their insect treats
carefully. Could make themselves sick.
Correctly written compound sentence:
Snackers must choose their insect treats
carefully, or they could make themselves
sick.

Complex sentence is made up of an independent
clause and one or more dependent clauses
connected to it.
Sentences can be joined and improved by using
descriptive clauses. You can also use subordinating
conjunctions to form complex sentences.

James Madison was the shortest U.S.
president.
He was five feet four inches tall.
