SFA Elite Youth Licence Pre Season Programme Max RogersMax Rogers
This document outlines a 4-week pre-season training programme with 4 microcycles. Each microcycle focuses on general preparation sessions to build fitness in the first week and more specific technical and tactical sessions in subsequent weeks. Daily sessions include details on principles, duration, techniques/tactics, and intensity guidelines. Fitness testing occurs at the start and end of the programme.
Here are some key points about how the four topics would influence the design of Stage IV (The Game):
- Physical Environment: Size of field should match the development stage of the athletes and objectives of training. For U9-U12, a smaller-sided field is appropriate.
- Game/Activity Rules: Rules should focus on learning objectives and be simple/clear for the age. For U9-U12, limit rules to essentials like offside.
- Objectives of Training: The game should allow players to apply techniques/tactics practiced in Stages I-III. Objectives may include dribbling to beat opponents or passing combinations.
- Development Stage of Athletes: The game
This document discusses strategies for beating defensive blocks. It defines the block as having 9-10 players behind the ball in the defensive and midfield thirds. To beat the block, teams must retain possession, switch play quickly to expose gaps, and attack the spaces around and behind the block with overlaps, combinations, and runs in behind. Playing into the feet of runners in the holes between lines or combining short passes to penetrate through the block are effective tactics. Accuracy is essential to bypass a packed defense.

However, in 2023, they played one another twice, with France endearing both matches 4-0 and 2-1 individually. Against Poland and Austria, the Netherlands also have a stout record, winning just under half the matches. They faced Austria at Euro 2020, engaging 2-0, and they haven't lost to Poland since 1979.
The lettering is on the wall for Holland to qualify for the knockouts, but nothing is failsafe. The Netherlands kickstart their Euros campaign against Poland on Sunday, June 16th. In Hamburg, they will have to go up against one of the best strikers in the world, Robert Lewandowski.
Netherlands vs Austria: Tough Challenges Await the Netherlands in Euro Cup Germany
Five days later, they travel south to face France in Leipzig, a side led by Kylian Mbappe - one of the finest players in the world currently and one of the most impressive players in his nation's history. To conclude, they face Austria in Berlin, knowing it could be the end of the road if they don't perform.
Ronald Koeman is widely considered one of the more successful Dutch managers in Premier League history, considering the nation has a reputation for struggling to replicate their talents in England. The former Everton manager went against that script and shone — and now he is back managing his nation.

Netherlands vs Austria: Ronald Koeman's Tactical Approach For UEFA Euro 2024
As well as being the highest-scoring defender in history, Koeman is a man with immense tactical knowledge. He returned to manage Holland at the start of 2023 after it was announced Louis van Gaal would retire. His life back in the dugout with the team wasn't easy, as he lost his first match 4-0 to France after going 3-0 down within 21 minutes.
However, he eventually helped them qualify for Euro Cup Germany. The 61-year-old likes to organize his team with a defensive mindset. Some might call it pragmatic as he defends with minimal space between the lines, but that's often needed for international football.

6. Football is simple. Play football simple is difficult.
What is behind this phrase? Why is football so simple, yet complex?
What parts play a role if improving players is your goal?
What should I take into account when I want to create a learning environment?
The next slide’s im gonna take you through glimpses of my view on football.
LET THEM PLAY!

7. Coerver tought us: LET THEM PLAY!

11. LET THEM PLAY!
We as coaches have to know why players make decisions in the field.
Have a look at the video and try to answer the ‘why?’ question if like you
were coaching this player.
11/21
13. To make football simple, I broke the game down into 10 guidelines:
1: When you play, compete to win.
2: If your team does not have the ball, take it away from your opponent.
3: If you have the ball, score the goal.
4: If you can’t score, pass it to a teammate.
5: If you want to play together, you have to understand each other.
6: When you don’t win the game, you’ve made (to many) wrong decisions.
7: When you win, you played better then your opponent.
8: When you lose a lot of games, your opponents are to good.
9: When you train, train to get better.
10: The better you train, the faster your progression will be.
This is my training filosophy. It’s a mindset I try to create within the team.
LET THEM PLAY!
13/21
14. Football is difficult when we look at the next slide.
Because football is difficult I’ve made the slide complex. Step
by step, just like my methodology things will get more clear.
LET THEM PLAY!

15/21
16. Translated to tactical periodization, I work with 4 game like simulations:
In-game simulations:
• Defending at opponent’s half
• Attacking at own half
• Defending at own half
• Attacking at opponent’s half
LET THEM PLAY!
Practise workout:
• Defending is easy, we know what is gonna happen
• Attacking is easy, because we know what we can do
• Defending is difficult, you’ll play numbers down
• Attacking is difficult, you have to surprise the opponent
16/21
17. All the
principles
that come forward from
a game and are used in
practise and matches.
This is what I coach
throughout a season.
Don’t worry…we’ll have a
closer look in a minute
LET THEMPLAY!
17/21
26. Didactical conditions:
- In-game simulations
- Players learn both knowingly and unknowingly
- Tactics are superior, technique is guiding
- Teach players to think along in in-game simulations
- Teach players how to communicate about the excersises
- Use teamwork to reach a certain goal
26/38
27. Practical conditions:
- Use as much principles as possible (unknowingly)
- Game like practise:
* use 1 bal during excersie
* use the rules/find borders/cross borders (mindset)
* numbers up – numbers down
* provide space for sollutions (no boundries)
* Repetiotion, but not in a row
* lots of change in positions
* after the exercise an end result must be provided
- High difficulty rate: They must be able to just or just not reach it
- Coach guidance: Controled (they can’t– to complex),
to guided (can do some- challenge),
to independant (they can – complex to others).
27/38
