TECHNOLOGY USE VS TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION Lauren Detrick
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Technology Use: Presenting information to students using technology such as PowerPoint presentations, overhead projectors, etc. While technology use is beneficial in the classroom, it does not offer students the chance to work on the hands-on tasks that require problem solving. 1 Technology Integration: Allowing the students to USE and INTERACT with technology to further their understanding of a concept. Students need the opportunity to solve problems and manipulate objects and computer programs to further their understanding. 1 Sources: 1 https://oncourse.iu.edu/access/content/group/FA07-BL-EDUC-W401-C6753/Week%205:%20Technology% 20Use%20vs.%20Technology%20Integration/Computers%20as%20Mindtools.pdf
THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION: Students learn most effectively by interacting with their environment and working through tasks that involve manipulating objects 1 Students should be required to reflect on and explain their process of completing a task in order to help them completely understand the knowledge they have constructed 1 Knowing this, technology integration is vital to allow students these opportunities! TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION IDEAS At Seattle's John Stanford International School children participate in social studies units on Asia, Africa, Australia, Mexico and South America. Students actively apply the lessons in foreign language and culture by v ideo-conferencing with sister schools in Japan, Africa and Mexico, by exchanging messages , gifts and joining in charity projects. 1 Sources: 1 How to Bring our Schools out of the 20 th Century: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1568480,00.html Picture: http://www.wiredred.com/images/video_conferencing_picture_in_picture.jpg
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION IDEAS Allow students to visit internet sites such as pbs.org and teachertube.com during work time to increase their understanding of a particular topic. Students can use the internet at home to complete assignments! Blogging , Wiki pages , Google Earth , YouTube. 2 Sources : 2 50 ways to integrate technology [by Anne Leftwich] (PPT ) http://daily.hotpads.com/hotpads_daily/images/i_love_blogging.jpg http://healeylibrary.wikispaces.com/space/showimage/wiki.gif
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION IDEAS Interactive white boards, remote controls, computer tablets , and SynchronEyes are great tools to use with the class as a whole . 2 Digital cameras are a great way to allow students to express their creativity in the classroom, on field trips, and at home. 2 Sources: 2 50 ways to integrate technology [by Anne Leftwich] (PPT ) Picture: http://www.oecd.org/vgn/images/portal/cit_731/55/20/38525304Whiteboards.JPG Interactive Whiteboard
THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION Technology integration is completely different from technology use. Any teacher can use technology in their classroom. I challenge you to also integrate technology into your curriculum! Using the technology integration ideas I mentioned in this presentation, allow your students the opportunity to learn using hands-on experience with different forms of technology!
