Trailer analysis
Analysis of the features of ten teaser trailers, and ten
theatrical trailers.
Teaser trailer example 1:The Hunger games-
Mockingjay part 2
The hunger games is an extremely well known series and films which is why it
great for teaser trailers, because it raises the excitement of huge fans of the
series but only giving them the sneak preview. The features of this trailer
included:
• Very vague release date to increase anticipation
• Only one piece of dramatic music
• Short, sharp cuts in the music to create a more dramatic trailer
• Slow fades into important scenes
• A lot of close ups of recognisible characters
• Location shots
• Dramatic speeches from the protagontist (Jennifer Lawerence) outlining
the plot to destroy the capital, which then builds tension and excitement
from the viewers
• Recognisble features, such as the symbolic whistleing of the capital and
characters.
• A lot of destruction and dramatic scenes in consession.
• Only 1 and a half minutes long, so that not too much of the plot is given
away too early.
• Extreme tension built by some hinting to death.
Teaser trailer example: Magic mike XXL
Magic mike is also a very popular series of films, and this is the second
edition of this film. The sexualised genre of the film also lends itself very
well to a teaser trailer. Features of this teaser trailer include:
• Very slow introduction to the protagonist to built excitement from
viewers.
• Slow introuduction of beat to hint at the dancing element, which
then builds to the full song which is played throughout.
• Vague release date
• Many shots of topless men to attract the mainly female based
audience
• Close ups of the protagonist (Channing Tatum) to build excitement
among viewers
• Recognisble features from the first film, such as similar characters,
similiar stage, lighting etc
• Many clips of sexual dancing, another also recognisble feature of
the previous film
• Cut in the music when the protagonist talks, which also hints at a
brewing relationship and twist in the plot.
Teaser trailer example 3:- Masterminds
Masterminds is a crime comedy film with many famous
appeareances in it. Due to the many well known celebrities in it,
it also lends itself well to being a teaser trailer. Some of the
features in this teaser trailer were:
• Close ups of the main characters/ well known celebrities
to acknowledge the genre and to encourage people to
watch through the excitement of many known celebrities.
• Flashes of the actors name
• Sharp contrast in genre, the beginning being a crime then
switching to the protagonist, from this point it is clear the
film is going to be a comedy.
• Using mainly clips which contain a lot of one liners or
comedy in it to entice the audience and once again to
emphasise the genre.
• Very fast use of editing
• Credits and then a humourous scene
• Only one and a half minutes long
Teaser trailer example 4-Marley and Me
Marley and Me is a very popular film, and this teaser trailer of it
was significantly a lot different from all the other trailers I
watched. This is because of its very unusual and individual
features, which included:
• One long extended scene of a very cute dog running
across the beach
• Recognisble slow motion song used for the whole trailer
• Only 57 seconds long
• Only one switch of camera to Owen Wilson and Jennifier
Aniston running in slow motion and calling after Marley, to
not only hint at plot, but to engage the audience through
the endorsement of very popular celebrities.
• Very vague release date.
• The lack of change entices and markets the audience in a
very enticing and interesting way.
Teaser trailer example 5- Spectre
Spectre is one of the many sequels to the James Bond films,
which is a reason why it is very suited to a teaser trailer. Some of
the features I noticed were:
• 'Coming soon' as the release date to excite fans
• Very slow introduction of the theme tune in short burts,
accompained by very slow edits and fades to black to draw
the audience in and to also identify the genre and the film.
• Many wide and location shots to give a very simple idea of
the plot which will engage people's interest.
• A lot of darkness present to emphasise dark genre.
• Close ups of protagonists so the audience release the film
is a sequel.
• Scenes of a funeral to add to the ideas of the plots.
• Short clips of fast cars to link to Bond's traditional image.
• Use of silence and xylophone to create a creepy and tense
atmosphere.
• Dialogue limited to threats and the introduction of Bond
• Shadowy figures.
• Extremely effective title with a bullet hole through the screen
accompained by theme tune.
Teaser trailer example 6-The good dinosaur
The good dinosaur is a film created by disney pixar, and this teaser
trailer did not give a lot away as to what the plot actually was,
which is why it was interesting. Some of the features I noticed
were:
• Very slow introduction and wide shot of the location of space
to show the genre is fantasy and the cartoon style of the
location made it obvious that it was made by disney.
• Very quiet and slow music
• Captions at the side as to when the asteroids wiped out all
dinosaurs, but then inverted it.
• They left the word's 'What if' and this use of rhetorical
question really entices the audience to want to know more.
• Only a really short conscession of slips from the film of many
different dinosaurs, so not much of the plot was shot.
• Fades to black before the titles.
• Zooms out on a drawing of a dinosaur with a hand in it, to
hint that humans are leaving with dinosaurs, but still keeping
the plot quite hidden.
Teaser trailer example 7
Ant man is a film created by marvel about a superhero. This
teaser trailer is extremely dramatic, and contains many
features to point towards the tradtional superhero genre. Some
examples of this are:
• Very slow cuts and shots during the beginning with fades
to black to ease the audience in and make them engage
with the genre.
• Many slow pans of location shots
• Voice over of a man talking about saving the world, and
children etc to make it clear there is a mission ahead
and of the plot.
• Close up of famous protagonist
• Shown the production company label very close to the
beginning so that this is recognisble to the audience as
making high quality films and urges them to keep
watching.
• Sharp contrast into very short clips of new technology,
police sirens, destruction and superheros with tense
music to build tension and interest.
Teaser trailer example 8-The Last Witch Hunter
This teaser trailer was probably one of the best I had watched
because of its extremely effective use of build up and sound.
Some of the features used to create this and also during the
teaser trailer were:
• Significant use of heartbeat sounds to build tension and
really reach out to the audience
• Very slow angelic music accompained by fades to black
and many location shots.
• Very blurred image of the protagonist with two people
surrounding him to create mystery to the storyline
• Extremely dramatic and powerful beat and music
accompained by short bursts of clips involving
dangerous elements such as fire and weapons.
• Close up of protagonists.
• Vague release date
• Clips of supernatural elements such as the devil to
emphasise danger.
Teaser trailer example 9-Romeo and Juliet
This teaser trailer is based on the classic play by William
Shakespeare which is why it lends itself well to a teaser
trailer. Some of the features I spotted were:
• Very unusual beginning to a teaser trailer, with rock
like music and many flashes of close ups and
destruction to draw audience in.
• Cut to extreme contrast with the song 'kissing you', a
very popular and slow romance song, which is then
followed by slow clips of Romeo and Juliets love
through snippets of the scenes from the film.
• The title is unusually shown in the middle of the teaser
trailer, and from then on the trailer has another contrast
to mysterious and crime like music, which clips of
loads of cars spinning out of control, destruction of the
town, introduction of enemies and other violent things
such as gun shots.
• The title is then shown again and the song changes
back to kissing you, which is very unusual but effective
in showing the two genres to the story.
Teaser trailer example 10-Scream 4
Scream 4 is one of the popular sequels of the original film
'Scream'. This teaser trailer included many features such as:
• Slow fades to black to introduce all the characters, but from
different angles to show their dominance in the film
• Extremely tense and uncomfortable music to put the
audience on edge.
• Short bursts of people screaming and intense clips of death
to foreshadow the films plot
• Clips from a home movie perspective to make the film more
intense
• Red lighting to create fear
• Close ups of the serial killer lunging towards the screen
• Cut outs of music and switches to two girls talking in silence
to build up to the appearance of scream.

This teaser trailer included many features such as: • Slow fades to black to introduce all the characters, but from different angles to show their dominance in the film • Extremely tense and uncomfortable music to put the audience on edge. • Short bursts of people screaming and intense clips of death to foreshadow the films plot • Clips from a home movie perspective to make the film more intense • Red lighting to create fear • Close ups of the serial killer lunging towards the screen • Cut outs of music and switches to two girls talking in silence to build up to the appearance of scream.
