A clinical information system (CIS) is a technology-based collection of patient information used to support clinical decision making and communication between healthcare providers. Key stakeholders to involve in choosing, implementing, and revising a CIS include nurses, nurse managers, and clinical analysts. An effective CIS contains an electronic health record component with eight basic elements and clinical decision support tools updated with evidence-based guidelines. Education and training of healthcare providers is important for successful CIS implementation and should occur in small group sessions with ongoing re-education.
