Editor's Notes
The common core standards are going to change the way we look at the classroom. While much of the verbiage and many of the concepts presented by common core are not new, they will effectively push us toward a shift that educators have been meaning to take for years. From what we have just seen, common core will require that students work more collaboratively and with greater emphasis o tech ology. As a result, we will need to shift from a teacher centered classroom to a student centered classroom.Students will work more with project based learning activities, they will create more, and as teachers we will need to differentiate the learning process as we go. What does that mean?
Many teachers faced with the prospect of providing more technology to their students are asking where it will come from. Many of you probably have the basic tools in their classroom now, while others have greater access to tools that will seemingly allow them to go further. Today we are going to talk about three areas where you can take advantage of tools already available to you.The internetInteractive whitboards, - which, by the way, with a projector and access to the internet, many of these resources can be used without a whiteboard. And ipads. Now I know what youre thinking – some of you may not have ipads. That’s ok. I would guess that in your community, there are kids floating around with old ipods and iphones at home. It may be time to start thinking in terms of BYOD – bring your own device.
Wikis and blogs can be used as a means for students to create documents and show understanding of a concept. As a body of work, the wiki or blog can become a digital portfolio for your student and they move forward through school or into college. Wikis can be used as a place to share notes, as well as a place for students to create a research and writing project on a topic. Not only can they work to research and write their project, but once completed it becomes a document on the web from which others can benefit.Students and teachers can also use these tools as an alternative to textbooks.
