The way an organization is designed and structured can have significant effects on its members and its ability to execute its strategy. In this module we will try to understand those effects and analyze the behavioral implications of different organizational designs.
An organizational structure defines how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, and coordinated. According to Robbins and Judge (2014) managers need to address six key elements when they design their organization’s structure:
Work specialization
—the extent to which activities are subdivided into separate jobs.
Departmentalization
—the basis on which jobs will be grouped together.
Chain of command
—the people to whom individuals and groups report.
Span of control
—the number of individuals that a manager can direct efficiently and effectively.
Centralization and decentralization
—the locus of decision-making authority.
Formalization
—the extent to which there will be rules and regulations to direct employees and managers.
A simple, but classical, classification of organizational designs focuses on
mechanistic
versus
organic
design. The mechanistic design is characterized by extensive departmentalization, high formalization, a limited information network, and centralization. The organic design is characterized by low formalization, flat hierarchy and the use of cross-hierarchical and cross-functional teams, free flow of information, and decentralization. Each design has advantages and disadvantages. For example, a mechanistic design is good for keeping the costs of standardized products or services down, but it inhibits innovation and creativity. Your instructor has assigned each group one of several types of enterprise systems (ERP, SCM, CRM, etc.) to research and prepare a paper and an executive-level informational presentation. In Group Project 1, your team prepared a 2-3 page paper summarizing the case studies, evaluating the success of the implementations, and identifying lessons learned. For this assignment, you are to work independently and write a 1-2 page memo (not including references page) to the CIO that identifies more than seven success criteria for implementation of enterprise systems, for the category of enterprise systems assigned to your group (ERP, SCM, CRM, etc.). (NOTE: More than seven success criteria are required to receive all possible points; see Grading Rubric below.)
1. Each of these success criteria should be briefly explained and then related to how they would be applied during an implementation of the assigned category of enterprise systems within the CIO’s organization.
2. Discuss how each of the success criteria relates, on a larger scale, to satisfying the enterprise architecture. Organizational Structure and Design
The way an organization is designed and structured can have significant effects on its members and its ability to execute its strategy. In this module we will try to understand those effects and analyze the behavioral implications of different organizational designs.
An organizational structure defines how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, and coordinated. According to Robbins and Judge (2014), managers need to address six key elements when they design their organization’s structure:
Work specialization – the extent to which activities are subdivided into separate jobs.
Departmentalization – the basis on which jobs will be grouped together.
Chain of command – the people who individuals and groups report to.
Span of control – the number of individuals that a manager can direct efficiently and effectively.
Centralization and de-centralization – the locus of decision-making authority.
Formalization – the extent to which there will be rules and regulations to direct employees and managers.
One way to gain insight into the complexity of organizations and how organizations are structured or designed is through metaphors. For example, using metaphors, an organization can be talked about as if it were a machine or as if it were an organism. The organization that is like a machine is characterized by extensive departmentalization, high formalization, and limited by low formalization, flat hierarchy and the use of cross-hierarchical and cross-functional teams, free flow of information, and decentralization. Each design has advantages and disadvantages. For example, organizations that are like machines are often good at keeping the costs of standardized products or services down, but could inhibit innovation and creativity. The Toyota Strategic grouping provides an analysis to understand better the strategy employed within the company. This makes it easy for strategists to understand the industry better in which they operate in. in addition to that, it helps in the identification of any gaps or areas where a shift in the strategy could help in building rewards (Drejer, 2002). The rewards can be built through capitalizing on an opportunity in a less crowded market. Toyota Corporation can have different business segments catering to different markets. Strategic groups can be varying in an industry such that big businesses may have a much higher bargaining power than the small businesses.

Toyota should use a team divisional design. This structure uses teams as the main element of coordinating work operations (Pearson, 2003). The Company depends entirely on the abilities, skills, employee relations, consistent services, and decisions that are made by key staff members and the management team. Besides, for the organization to attain its objectives will heavily rely on its capability to recognize, recruit, prepare, and maintain the highly qualified workforce. This process includes competing with other firms in the industry for the skillfully talented individuals, and the corporation may be at a risk of losing key employees or be unsuccessful in attracting, recruiting, training and maintaining a gifted workforce that meets the organization’s needs. Analysis
Virtual team members and virtual workplaces have substantially changed the way tasks are carried out in various organizations around the globe. Bigger, as well as small organizations are developing virtual teams, which operate slightly in most cases distance away from one another (Pearson, 2003). Virtual employees and workplaces have affected the global job performance in the following ways. Virtual workplaces that are operated by organizations do not have to budget for office expenses for their employees. Overhead costs such as leasing of office space, utility expenses, and furniture purchases are not considered for organizations that have developed virtual workplaces and staff. Your instructor has assigned each group one of several types of enterprise systems (ERP, SCM, CRM, etc.) to research and prepare a paper and an executive-level informational presentation. In Group Project 1, your team prepared a 2-3 page paper summarizing the case studies, evaluating the success of the implementations, and identifying lessons learned. For this assignment, you are to work independently and write a 1-2 page memo (not including references page) to the CIO that identifies more than seven success criteria for implementation of enterprise systems, for the category of enterprise systems assigned to your group (ERP, SCM, CRM, etc.). (NOTE: More than seven success criteria are required to receive all possible points; see Grading Rubric below.)
1. Each of these success criteria should be briefly explained and then related to how they would be applied during an implementation of the assigned category of enterprise systems within the CIO’s organization.

Organizational Structure and Design
The way an organization is designed and structured can have significant effects on its members and its ability to execute its strategy. In this module we will try to understand those effects and analyze the behavioral implications of different organizational designs.
An organizational structure defines how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, and coordinated. According to Robbins and Judge (2014), managers need to address six key elements when they design their organization’s structure:
Work specialization – the extent to which activities are subdivided into separate jobs.
Departmentalization – the basis on which jobs will be grouped together.
Chain of command – the people who individuals and groups report to.
Span of control – the number of individuals that a manager can direct efficiently and effectively.
Centralization and de-centralization – the locus of decision-making authority.
Formalization – the extent to which there will be rules and regulations to direct employees and managers.
One way to gain insight into the complexity of organizations and how organizations are structured or designed is through metaphors. For example, using metaphors, an organization can be talked about as if it were a machine or as if it were an organism. The organization that is like a machine is characterized by extensive departmentalization, high formalization, and limited by low formalization, flat hierarchy and the use of cross-hierarchical and cross-functional teams, free flow of information, and decentralization. Each design has advantages and disadvantages. For example, organizations that are like machines are often good at keeping the costs of standardized products or services down, but could inhibit innovation and creativity. Virtual employees and workplaces have affected the global job performance in the following ways.
