So your assignment is to critique a journal article. This handout will give you a few guidelines to
follow as you go. But wait, what kind of a journal article is it: an empirical/research article, or a
review of literature? Some of the guidelines offered here will apply to critiques of all kinds of
articles, but each type of article may provoke questions that are especially pertinent to that type
and no other. Read on.
First of all, for any type of journal article your critique should include some basic information:
1. Name(s) of the author(s)
2. Title of article
3. Title of journal, volume number, date, month and page numbers
4. Statement of the problem or issue discussed
5. The author’s purpose, approach or methods, hypothesis, and major conclusions.
The bulk of your critique, however, should consist of your qualified opinion of the article.
Read the article you are to critique once to get an overview. Then read it again, critically. At this
point you may want to make some notes to yourself on your copy (not the library’s copy,
please).
The following are some questions you may want to address in your critique no matter what type
of article you are critiquing. (Use your discretion. These points don’t have to be discussed in this
order, and some may not be pertinent to your particular article.)
1. Is the title of the article appropriate and clear?
2. Is the abstract specific, representative of the article, and in the correct form?
3. Is the purpose of the article made clear in the introduction?
4. Do you find errors of fact and interpretation? (This is a good one! You won’t believe how
often authors misinterpret or misrepresent the work of others. You can check on this by looking
up for yourself the references the author cites.)
5. Is all of the discussion relevant?
6. Has the author cited the pertinent, and only the pertinent, literature? If the author has included
inconsequential references, or references that are not pertinent, suggest deleting them.
7. Have any ideas been overemphasized or underemphasized? Suggest specific revisions.
8. Should some sections of the manuscript be expanded, condensed or omitted?
9. Are the author’s statements clear? Challenge ambiguous statements. Suggest by examples how
clarity can be achieved, but do not merely substitute your style for the author’s.
10. What underlying assumptions does the author have?
11. Has the author been objective in his or her discussion of the topic?

Law of Allowing: The Law of Allowing states that for us to get what we want, we must be receptive to it. We can't merely say to the Universe that we want something if we don't allow ourselves to receive it. This will defeat our purpose for wanting it in the first place.

Case Study
In this section of your final project, you will develop a case study from which you will base your career plan. Do not use “Darren” from the resources. In your case study, you should briefly describe your client’s/student’s presenting problem or career concern, as well as relevant sociocultural factors that influence the case. Be sure to include all relevant information such as the client’s demographic variables (consider use of the ADDRESSING model of identity), the client’s specific career difficulties (e.g., problems maintaining adequate work/life balance, discrimination in the workplace, layoff/termination, relocation, dislike of job duties, etc.), and his or her goals for counseling. For example, in a clinical mental health setting, you might describe a 40-year-old African American woman who is seeking to explore new career options due to interpersonal difficulties at her current place of employment. In a school counseling setting, you might describe work with a 17-year-old high school senior whose parents emigrated from Mexico and is having difficulty deciding between college and the military. This section of your paper should be at least two paragraphs.

In this section of your final project, begin the explanation of your career plan for the case you developed above, following the Hill and O’Brien (1999) Helping Skills Model located in this week’s learning resources. For this stage, you should describe the activities you would engage in to facilitate career exploration with your client (Exploration, pp. 231–232). Be sure to provide a rationale for the activities you identify, using specific career theories as a framework. So your assignment is to critique a journal article. This handout will give you a few guidelines to
follow as you go. But wait, what kind of a journal article is it: an empirical/research article, or a
review of literature? Some of the guidelines offered here will apply to critiques of all kinds of
articles, but each type of article may provoke questions that are especially pertinent to that type
and no other. Read on.
First of all, for any type of journal article your critique should include some basic information:
1. Name(s) of the author(s)
2. Title of article
3. Title of journal, volume number, date, month and page numbers
4. Statement of the problem or issue discussed
5. The author’s purpose, approach or methods, hypothesis, and major conclusions.
The bulk of your critique, however, should consist of your qualified opinion of the article.
Read the article you are to critique once to get an overview. Then read it again, critically. At this
point you may want to make some notes to yourself on your copy (not the library’s copy,
please).
The following are some questions you may want to address in your critique no matter what type
of article you are critiquing. (Use your discretion. These points don’t have to be discussed in this
order, and some may not be pertinent to your particular article.)
1. Is the title of the article appropriate and clear?
2. Is the abstract specific, representative of the article, and in the correct form?
3. Is the purpose of the article made clear in the introduction?
4. Do you find errors of fact and interpretation? (This is a good one! You won’t believe how
often authors misinterpret or misrepresent the work of others. You can check on this by looking
up for yourself the references the author cites.)
5. Is all of the discussion relevant?
6. Has the author cited the pertinent, and only the pertinent, literature? If the author has included
inconsequential references, or references that are not pertinent, suggest deleting them.
7. Have any ideas been overemphasized or underemphasized? Suggest specific revisions.
8. Should some sections of the manuscript be expanded, condensed or omitted?
9. Are the author’s statements clear? Challenge ambiguous statements. Suggest by examples how
clarity can be achieved, but do not merely substitute your style for the author’s.
10. What underlying assumptions does the author have?
11. Has the author been objective in his or her discussion of the topic?
In addition, here are some questions that are more specific to empirical/research articles. (Again,
use your discretion.)
1. Is the objective of the experiment or of the observations important for the field?
2. Are the experimental methods described adequately?
3. Are the study design and methods appropriate for the purposes of the study?

BACKGROUND FOR THE PAPER: After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Examine the statement below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.

Case Overview Part A
In August, Jason Hubbs submitted a résumé to the human resource department of Big Time Computers Inc. in response to an advertisement in the local newspaper for a senior technical writer. The résumé was forwarded to Big Time’s Manager of Technical Publications, Lisa Cavanaugh, for her consideration.
Big Time Computers is a local high-tech firm with sales offices throughout the United States and Europe. At the time of the senior technical writer job advertisement, Big Time employed about 1,200 people. Big Time designs and manufactures high-end computer systems that sell in the $500,000 to $6,000,000 range. Big Time’s products are sophisticated and complex, and the working atmosphere is highly technical. The engineering department is the largest and most dominant department. Engineers are in management positions throughout the company, including top-level management. Due to the sophistication and complexity of their products, employees in marketing, customer service, and technical publications are required to have strong technical backgrounds; many have engineering or computer science degrees.
The technical publications department employed 14 people. This included the manager, two senior writers (Mark Samson and Chris Murray), seven writers, one technical editor (Colton Hamrick), and three editorial assistants. The manager had a business degree and had been working in the technical publications field for 12 years. The senior writers had four-year engineering degrees; the other seven writers had engineering degrees, computer science degrees, or two-year associate’s degrees in a technical field. The doctor runs through a battery of tests, checks in the girl’s ears to be sure everything looks good, and makes notes in the child’s folder. Then, she takes the mother by the arm. Hearing
is something most everyone does without even trying. It is a physiological response to sound waves moving through the air at up to 760 miles per hour. First, we receive the sound in our ears. Individuals who are suffering from depression lack interest in things they previously thought to be vital to them (Carey, 2017). Why the chosen topic is an active topic for the research paper The question on depression will be a robust research paper topic in that it is clear and addresses one single issue - that is depression (this aspect makes the topic-specific). It also conveys the main idea clearly and thus reduces the need for more elaboration on the subject (Lewis, 2015). Assumptions previously held about the topic Depression comes into place when there is a lack of interest in activities that were previously believed to be important. It represents itself also with sleep disturbance, poor motor coordination, prolonged sadness and an inability to proceed with the activities of daily living effectively. Therefore, it is essential that individuals who present with any of these signs seek medical help as soon as possible to avoid worsening of their situation. Different approaches including medication, electroconvulsive therapy, psychotherapy, and interpersonal therapy are effective in dealing with depression (Guintivano et al., 2018). QUESTION 2 Methods to use to obtain working knowledge for a research paper There are varied methods that can be used to acquire working knowledge that can be useful in a research paper. Some of the valuable techniques include the use of books from a library or another resource center, the use of the internet to collect relevant data from published websites and journals, the use of encyclopedias and textbooks. The collection of information from people who have either suffered from the conditions
- 8. identified at some point may also be useful. Government institutions are also useful avenues for collecting research information (Okun et al., 2018). How to research topics can be narrowed down Research topics can be narrowed down using the PICO method. The PICO method is an acronym that stands for patient or problem, intervention, comparison, and outcome. This method enables the researcher to narrow down the information to fit into the identified case or scenario and to assess a specific group. For instance, in the case of depression, individuals with a problem such as postpartum mothers can be identified, useful interventions and the comparisons and expected outcomes kept into consideration. The topic may then be narrowed down to challenges facing the management of women with postpartum depression during the postpartum period (Patel et al., 2017). QUESTION 3 Research Proposal for the Final Paper Topic: Challenges facing the management of women with postpartum depression. Background: Depression has the capability of causing disability. An individual suffering from depression is unable to cope appropriately with the activities of daily living. Mothers, during the postpartum period, are at high risk of postpartum depression. Those mothers who are affected by postpartum depression are not capable to appropriately fend for the needs of their children during this period. It is thus crucial to identify the challenges that the clinicians and other medical personnel go through as they treat the mothers during this period (Wilson et al., 2017). The paper in itself will seek to identify the various consequences of postpartum depression. These consequences include a decrease in the bonding of the mother and the child, an increase in child mortality and morbidity rates and a decline in the health of the child due to the unavailability of the mother. The post-partum period in itself describes six months after the
- 9. delivery of the child and is a very crucial time during the growth and development of the child in question. Thesis statement: Postpartum depression makes it difficult for the mother to have a good relationship with his or her child. It has a high prevalence rate especially among women at the postpartum period. To properly manage postpartum depression, it is essential to identify the various challenges that accompany it during the post-partum period. QUESTION 4 Interest inventory of some of the topics I would like to write about 1. Challenges are facing the management of women with postpartum depression. 2. The relationship between sleep disturbance and postpartum depression 3. Effects of depression in postpartum women 4. How depression decreases the life span of human beings. 5. Depression in medical students and medical tutors due to the lack of supplies. 9. The relationship between grieving and depression. Ways that can be used to determine the topic The topic to be researched must be concise and to the point. Additionally, the material for the research topic should be readily available without much strain. The research topic should be narrow enough to meet the context but should be broad enough to be researched. The issue should be captivating enough to capture not only the writer of the research but also the readers in different contexts. Additionally, it should be
