Radio 2 was launched in 1967 to provide a lighter alternative to Radio 1, playing laid-back pop, rock, folk, and jazz. In the early years, notable presenters included Roy Moore, Terry Wogan, David Hamilton, and John Dunn. By the late 1960s, the previous Light Programme had become outdated, so Radio 2 was developed to appeal to older audiences with a wider variety of "light" music genres. Terry Wogan hosted Radio 2's breakfast show from 1972 to 1984 and 1993 to 2009, building a large audience. The station also featured daily dramas and sports coverage to broaden its appeal during this time.
