Thesis paper on rap music.
Rap music has become one of the most distinctive and controversial music genres of the past few decades. A major part of hip hop culture, rap, discusses the experiences and standards of living of people in different situations ranging from racial stereotyping to struggle for survival in poor, violent conditions. Rap music is a vocal protest for the people oppressed by these things. Most people know that rap is not only music to dance and party to, but a significant form of expression. It is a source of information that describes the rage of people facing growing oppression, declining opportunities for advancement, changing moods on the streets, and everyday survival. Its distinct sound, images, and attitude are notorious to people of all...show more content...In the global popularity scene, hip hop now rules, and is a dominant cultural form in many parts of the world. Rap gives voice to every culture that produces and circulates it, not just African Americans. As a new force, rap levels the playing field, opening doors to new cultural players, and ripens for new corporate snakes to pounce on. Circulating ideas, images, sound, and style, it is becoming central to the new multimedia global culture and is an expression of a multicultural world with no borders and limits.
A raw expression of urban hip hop culture, rap quickly became the sound of African American anger, rebellion, cultural style, and experience. Anticipated by the ground breaking work of the West Coast based Watts Prophets and New York area Gil Scott Heron (whom I worked for at my senior experience internship at TVT Records) and the Last Poets in the early 1970s, the current configuration of rap

2. HIP HOP History
Hip-hop originated from African-Americans It was created in the 1970’s
Hip-hops culture is characterized by the four elements of rapping,
DJing, breaking and graffiti writing. It first emerged with Kool Herc and
contemporary disc jockeys and imitators creating rhythmic beats by
looping breaks. It was later accompanied by ‘rap’ which is a rhythmic
style of poetry presented in a 16-bar time frame and beat boxing. At its
best hip hop has provided an escape from poverty while giving a voice
to oppressed and "poverty-stricken" people worldwide, particularly in
inner cities and neighbourhoods suffering from urban blight, and
showcased their artistic ingenuity and talent on a global scale. At its
worst hip hop has mirrored the worst aspects of the mainstream
(American) culture that it emerged from: materialism, sexism, an
internalized racism, violence, and antipathy towards intellectualism.
3. Example of a Hip Hop Artist
Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972),[2]
better known by his stage name Eminem often stylised
as EMINƎM he is also known by his alter ego Slim Shady,
is an American rapper, record producer, songwriter, and
actor. In addition to his solo career, Eminem is a
member of his group D12, as well as one half of the hip
hop duo Bad Meets Evil, alongside Royce da 5'9".
Eminem is one of the world's best-selling music artists
and is the best-selling artist of the 2000s. He has been
listed and ranked as one of the greatest artists of all
time by many magazines, including Rolling Stone
magazine which ranked him 82nd on its list of The 100
Greatest Artists of All Time. The same magazine
declared him The King of Hip Hop.
4. Similar Sub Genres
Rap rock-Rap rock is a cross-genre fusing vocal and instrumental
elements of hip hop with various forms of rock. Rap rock's most
popular subgenres include rap metal and rapcore, which include heavy
metal-oriented and hardcore punk-oriented influences, respectively.
One of the earliest examples would be The Clash's song "The
Magnificent Seven" which fused new wave, hip hop and funk.
Bounce Music- As hip-hop started to spread outward from its birth in
the Bronx, one of the new localities that embraced and advanced the
genre was New Orleans. Local producers and record label owners with
past success in other black genre’s tried their hand in hip-hop, but
soon a new generation got involved. Kevin “MC T. Tucker” Ventry, one
of the first Bounce artists, captured the attention of the city in 1991
with his style of rap “defined by a preference for chanted
refrains…and the use of several core samples to form the backing
music,” two characteristics which came to signify Bounce music. The
sub-genre flourished in the city without much national recognition,
but soon New Orleans’ artists would take over the country.
Political Hip Hop-Political hip hop (also political rap) is a sub-genre of
hip hop music that developed in the 1980s. Inspired by 1970s political
preachers such as The Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron, Public Enemy
were the first political hip hop group. Grandmaster Flash and the
Furious Five released the first socio-political rap song in 1982, called
"The Message", which inspired numerous rappers to address social
and political subjects.
5. Imagery of Hip Hop
Most people are attracted to rap / hip-hop music
initially because of the music, not the words and
images associated with it.
The problem with rap / hip-hop isn’t really the
music. Music is a good thing. Rap / hip-hop music,
rock music, soul music, jazz, classical… It’s all
good.
The problem is the words and images that are
woven into them. And in the case of rap / hip-hop
we all are quite aware of what those words and
images are: glorification of
criminal behaviour, promiscuity, drugs, sex,
money, cars and guns.
When it comes to the artists themselves they tend
to wear plain stuff such as a baggy jeans and a
white T-shirt which just reflects where they come
from. In other words they try to represent their
hometown through the cloth they wear.
