Hip hop music originated in the Bronx, New York in the 1970s. DJ Kool Herc began chanting rhymes over instrumental sections of popular songs at parties, which became known as rapping. This new style of music became popular amongst young people, leading to the terms "rap" and "emceeing" coming into use. Over time, hip hop artists began representing the genre through their clothing, lyrics, and imagery, which often depicted themes of violence, drugs, and crime and drew from street culture. The hip hop subculture developed distinctive styles across clothing, magazines, and music that identified with urban backgrounds.
