Hip–hop has been around for several years and is still popular today. It has developed into both a
cultural movement as well as a musical genre. Hip– hop is comprised of rap, graffiti, breakdancing,

important in our lives that we need to understand how hip–hop began by recognizing the artists who

The Influence Of Music On The Music Industry
Music has always had an effect on people on their culture. From Jazz in the 1920's to Rap just
starting up in the late 1980's. Different genres of music have different effects on people and no genre
is specific to any culture. There are a variety of people that are affected by various genres of music
that you would least expect and it's helping expand the music industry greatly. I believe the most
influential genre of music in my opinion is Hip Hop/Rap.
Hip Hop/Rap started from block parties in New York City in the late 70's. MC's paid DJ's to
introduce them to crowds and to also to keep the crowds pumped up and entertained. The DJ's came
into play after each song and they were the ones to try and get the crowd involved and keep them
entertained. The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," released in 1979 and Kurtis Blow's "The
Breaks," released in 1980 opened up the Hip Hop industry and really got things going for Rap.
Kurtis Blows song hit top 5 and it also went gold. Hip hop and Rap started as a voice for the
African– American community but quickly came to represent an entire generation. From these
humble beginnings almost 40 years ago, a multi–billion dollar industry has grown.
However, this musical genre has not come without its challenges. In the 90's Rap in the United
States was strongly divided between East Coast and West Coast Rappers.West Coast came out
swinging first when Ice– T released a song "6 in the mornin'" which was considered the first gangsta
rap song

Hip Hop And Rap Hop
"Hip–hop/rap is a subcultural movement that formed during the early 1970s in the Bronx, New
York" ("Hip hop"). Hip– hop has changed the way we speak, dress, think, and has even altered the
way artist make music. Traveling all around The United States, Hip–hop has made many different
names for itself. There is MC Rap, Gangsta Rap, Conscious Rap, and Old School Rap sprouting
from the meaning of Hip–hop, all urban genres using different types of dialect. According to Oxford
Dictionaries, dialect is "a particular form of a language that is peculiar to a specific region or social
group" ("Dialect"), they decide on the type of message they want to convey to the listener through
the rap. The two rappers I have chosen to show the growth in Hip–hop language history, are
Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg. Lamar is considered as an American influential rapper. Whereas,
the west coast godfather, Snoop Dogg, falls under the genre of gangsta rap. These West Coast
rappers are from the same area, but when it comes to Hip–hop, they seem to speak a different
language. The evolution of the world changes the topics discussed in Hip–hop, these two artists
promote similar messages in their music, such as gang affiliation, unity, and politics.
Snoop Dogg who is from Long Beach, California speaks a blend of gangsta and West Coast dialect
in his music, which has an urban feel relating to the streets. West Coast Rap took over the hip–hop
scene for the '90s, creating the new genre of gangsta rap.

Henry found that music does have an effect on substance use. In a study done in 2013 they found
that an elevated popular music involvement is a risk factor with respect to teenager's substance use
behavior. More specifically, Chen et al. (2006) found a relationship between teens who listen to rap
music and the use of marijuana. This study included asking teenagers about their music preferences
and whether they had used marijuana or not. This study was conducted through an anonymous
survey. The results of this study showed that teens who listened to rap music on a regular basis were
more likely to use marijuana during their teenage years. In a study done by Vuolo et al. (2013) they

about the use of marijuana were also asked. The results of this study found that the teens who

all show that music can have an effect on substance use. This shows that when teenagers listen to
music where drugs, marijuana for example, are glorified, it can have an effect on their use of this

Gangster/Gangsta Rap is a hip–hop music that it has a theme and has lyrics on the lifestyle of a
gangster. Gangster music is more than the "Gangster lifestyle" it is about the artists getting people

The song I chose for this comparison is "Gin and Juice". This song was originally released by Snoop
Dogg in 1993 and is performed with the traditional "West Coast Rap" sounds of the time. One
successful cover of this song was released by The Gourds in 1998, who performed the song in a
bluegrass/Alt. country style. One of the major differences between the two performances is the
timbre of the pieces. With his use of electronic, midi based instrumentation and his "laid back"

Shortly after, Tupac was shoot and murdered in a drive–by shooting in Las Vegas after he was
leaving the Grand hotel (Biography Channel 2013). Tupac was a very strong individual and wouldn't

Chang writes in his book about how hip hop connects with many different real world problem going
on politically and socially in many different places. He tells a story of a beaten and battered area of
South Bronx. In this small area there was no law or order since many jobs were lost and most of
what was left there were people of color from different parts of the world, including Puerto Rico and
Jamaica. Due to the lack of protection Chang tells us that gangs were created as a means of
protection from the junkies and other scavengers. Their way of dealing with things was very violent
in nature, later on when more and more gangs started popping up they became territorial. They
attacked other members who wore their "colors" on another gang's turf. South Bronx became a very
dangerous place full of nothing but youthful gangs and gang related violence. Socially it was the
lack of jobs and other necessities that led to the creation of hip hop. There became a treaty of sorts,

Finally I will comment on what implications any trend may hold for natural language change in
AAVE and for cultural events during this time and compare the results with previous studies on the
environmental constraints for the copula in AAVE and HHNL.
Although the current study examines language use in HHNL, it is first necessary to go further back
in time to the origins of AAVE and look at specific features AAVE has in contrast with standard
English and also examine further developments of AAVE through cultural movements such as Hip
Hop. In one of the earlier studies done on language use in AAVE, John R Rickford, Arnetha Ball,
Raina Jackson Blake, and Naomi Martin (1991), stated that AAVE is the only American dialect

American dialects. Rickford also discussed copula variation playing a large role in the origin debate
of AAVE. He presents all previously stated methodologies of the origin debate including the
