Theme or focus of images
Piper Ferguson says her inspiration to be a photographer, director, and screenwriter
comes from ‘80s fashion and the hyper-reality of MTV. Ferguson's images are edgy
and soulful, and she's both toured with Iron & Wine and photographed artists at
Coachella, South By Southwest, and the Winter Music Conference. Her
accomplishments are many, both in and out of music photography, and it's because
she has an immaculate ability to tell stories while doing what she loves. A quick
Paragraph from the website I got the images off.
4. What I can is these six images shows people singing with their band two of the
pictures are easy to see who the singer is. Picture six is snoop dogg and picture two
looks like Amy Winehouse.
All the other photos are hard to read on who are they. It doesn’t mention who they
are so it’s hard to tell if they are well known bands or just indie bands. This type of
photography is music because of they all are bands either on a stage with their
instruments or even a solo singer just in a room, or on stage to a massive festival.
Picture One shows a group of people hanging around outside a store, but at the
back there is a subway entrance. I know this one is music because of the people who
are the centre of attention on the left. They have guitars, which could suggest that
they are just singing on the street entertaining people on their night out. They are also
a near are music hall which could mean they are trying to get noticed to become
better in their music.
Picture Two shows a women putting on her shoe on stage with her band behind her, it
is different because this seems to be in gazebo with the view of the backstage
behind her on the other hand picture one is fully outside so you can that they are
very different.
Picture Three is similar to the previous on because it shows the backstage and the
band but the difference between the two is that this one has less space as if they are
not as well-known as the previous one so you could say it was similar to picture one, it
is also in colour to show the lights and the background which is different to picture
two where it is in black and white.
Picture four shows a solo singer on his own in an opera house or a theatre, he could
be practicing for his gig or just there for the photographer. This picture is in black and
white which is the same as picture one and two it kind of makes the attention on the
guy in the room instead of the room it also does that in picture two but not as much.
Picture five shows a couple of singers looking at each other as if they’ve just finished
there show it is kind of similar to the previous photo because it is in black and white
but also feels like that they are getting attention because you can hardly see
anything else other than the heads of the band in the back.
Composition
I’d say the photographer took these pictures obviously to take it of the artist, not to
make them look silly but to make them look respectful and interesting, maybe even
mysterious, he obviously stood where he did because he got the best angle for his
photo if so then he got a great result. These pictures are example of what great music
photography is all about. Then finally he must of wanted to capture the excitement
and the things that were going on in that moment by photography that’s what he
did and he got these images as proof.
5. Techniques used
This would be a fast shutter speed to capture the image in an instant so they can
capture the perfect image for the musical artist. Rule of three could have been used
to capture the artist position it so he may have been full in shot or just half of him. Then
finally there is depth of field only shown in picture five where it is focused on the
couple and abit blurry of the over members of the band.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths- it shows of the artists and makes them interesting and makes me feel
jealous that I wasn’t there.
Weaknesses- wish they could of included a bit more in the photo also maybe leave a
caption of who the artist were because it didn’t show it on the source I got the
pictures off.
