2. Course Structure
The course consists of:
Exam 70% of overall mark
Folio 30% of overall mark
• In order to be permitted to sit the exam,
you must PASS two internal units

3. Unit: Analysis & Evaluation
• In order to pass this unit you must achieve the
following outcomes:
• Outcome 1: U A E of a detailed written text
(close reading)
• Outcome 2: UAE of a detailed spoken text
(listening & answer questions)

4. Unit: Creation & Production
• In order to pass this unit you must achieve the
following outcomes:
• Outcome 1: Produce a detailed written text
(folio piece)
• Outcome 2: Take part in a detailed spoken
interaction (indiv. talk or group
discussion.)

5. Folio
• Your folio is worth 30% of your overall mark and
will consist of
• ONE discursive essay (500 – 1000 words)
&
• ONE creative essay (500 – 1000 words)
These pieces will be written under supervised
conditions and submitted to the SQA for marking.

6. Exam
• The National 5 exam is worth 70% of your overall
mark. The exam consists of:
• 1 x Close Reading (non-fiction) 30 marks
• 1 x Critical Essay (a studied text) 20 marks
• 1 x Text. Analysis (studied SCOTTISH text) 20 marks

7. Exam
• The National 5 exam is worth 70% of your overall
mark. The exam consists of:
