Profiling the Assistive Technology IndustryJennifer Flagg
R&D efforts are most likely to result in successful new products when marketplace needs and business viability considerations are addressed early and often throughout a project. Profiling an industry segment is one way to explore the market potential of proposed products and services. This poster introduces methods for creating industry profiles, and offers examples related to educational technologies, vision technology, and wheeled mobility.

The “Study on economic assessment for improving eAccessibility services and products” general objective is twofold: to produce specific micro-level evidence and practical tools that support decision makers of firms and public sector organisations in their assessment of their investments in eAccessibility, and to generate aggregate figures and recommendations that provide policy makers with a view on the order of magnitude of potential benefits and costs for the economy and society as a whole, as well as the mechanisms to boost them.
This study aims to contribute to the improvement of the accessibility of mainstream ICT by providing useful information on costs and benefits of eAccessibility to the different stakeholders, including empirical evidence, analytically/theoretically elaborated instruments and data, and recommendations for improvement.

Quality and standards for renewable energyfboshell
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) works towards a sustainable and widespread deployment of renewable energy technologies. Quality assurance and standardization play a key role in transitioning towards innovative and sustainable energy technologies, by strengthening rapidly growing markets and facilitating trading of renewable energy technologies. IRENA’s study from 2013 in this field, the first one ever focused on renewable energy technologies, shows that quality and standardization are crucial in global technology value chains matching producers and user in opposite places in the world by harmonizing processes, allowing comparability of contracts, and decreasing uncertainty. Also that assured quality, in conformity with sound standards, mitigates technical risks therefore attracting major investments and increasing the trust in the technology by financial sources and public. Quality assurance and conformity with sound standards enables long lasting technological solutions by reducing the replacements to be done in technological plants and equipment and thus, reinvesting the capital that would be aimed at repairing infrastructure to accelerate the deployment of the technology. Quality reinforces the reliability on RET markets and this highly contributes to spread awareness about RET achievements and fulfilment of energy needs.
IRENA is finalizing its study on quality assurance mechanisms for small wind turbines and solar water heaters. The study, undertaken in cooperation with a number of national and regional experts, will provide guidance and recommendation on how countries can implement national quality mechanisms, adapted to their national context, to support growing markets for these technologies.

Sustainable computing for small businessPaul Wallbank
A short presentation on some ways to reduce the environmental costs of computing given to the North Sydney Better Business Partnership on 22 February 2011.
I wrote this paper (16pg report) as a final capstone to complete my independent research requirement. This paper is a literary analysis focusing on many important factors for reducing power and environmental waste and adopting Green Computing methods in general and in regards to practically applying this information to a real world situation. This paper will take a look at several green initiatives currently under as well as future outlooks. The intention of this research is to inevitably gain a base of knowledge in order to develop a green plan for my department at Student Affairs Marketing and to educate our employees on what they can do to improve upon or impact in the ever growing field of green computing and discuss our options.
Along with the paper, I came up with a Green policy for my previous employer that they made a permanent plan. After all my work was complete, I had to present my research and findings to my class and the faculty of the department.

Monitoring and Evaluation of International Development Assistance to the Priv...CesToronto
Effective monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems are essential to learning and accountability. M&E system reviews provides perspective on what is working well, where there are gaps in coverage or weaknesses that need to be addressed, how the M&E information is actually used in decision making, and whether the system is efficient. This session will demonstrate the methods, tools and results in assessing the functioning of the M&E systems of the World Bank Group’s private sector operations in two specialized agencies: the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency.
Private sector has taken a much larger role in development interventions that ever before. This presentation outlines the Monitoring and Evaluation systems used by the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Guarantees Agency (MIGA) as well as how the Independent Evaluation Group assesses the effectiveness of these systems. Main messages of this presentation are:
- Private Sector operations have specific data gathering advantage/disadvantage based on their business model
- M&E systems should adopt to the business practices to be effective and efficient
- M&E can influence learning, quality of work and outcome

Exploring the use of signals in the venture emergence of new technology-based...University of Stuttgart
Presentation at 20th ICE Conference – IEEE TMC Europe Conference 23-25 June 2014, Bergamo, Italy.
Abstract: New technology-based firms have to deal with the
technology development and market search challenges at the same time. The venture emergence in technology entrepreneurship symbolizes that the new venture has been able to find the right fit for its technology and becomes an operating business. The complex nature and dynamism of technology markets suggest the need to look beyond the venture resources in order to explain how new ventures overcomes the market uncertainty towards their technological products, and become operational businesses. We use a multiple case study of three new technology-based firms to explore the use of signals as market creation strategies in the context of venture emergence. The results suggest that entrepreneurs rely on market, technology and social capital signaling to reduce the uncertainty and advance towards venture emergence. This research holds implications for researchers interested in further exploring the integration of marketing, signaling and entrepreneurship theories and for entrepreneurs interested in overcoming the market uncertainty towards their technology, products and venture performance.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
